Venezuela protests spread to poor areas, two more deaths amid unrest Posted: 12 Apr 2017 12:32 PM PDT By Alexandra Ulmer and Corina Pons CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelans in poor areas blocked streets and lit fires during scattered protests across the country on Tuesday night, and two people were killed during the growing unrest in the midst of a crippling economic crisis. In a worrying sign for leftist President Nicolas Maduro, groups in Caracas' traditionally pro-government hillside slums and low-income neighborhoods took to the streets, witnesses and opposition lawmakers reported. Maduro foes were galvanized by footage of a crowd in the south-eastern Bolivar state heckling and throwing objects at the closely-protected leader during a rally on Tuesday, before state television cut off the broadcast. |

Nigeria seizes $43 million cash stash in Lagos house Posted: 13 Apr 2017 08:09 AM PDT Nigeria's anti-graft agency seized over $43 million in cash during a raid on a Lagos apartment in what it hailed as a victory for President Muhammadu Buhari's war on corruption following a string of setbacks. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said in a statement issued late Wednesday it discovered the "humongous" amount of money in an apartment in Ikoyi, an upscale district of Lagos. "She comes looking haggard, with dirty clothes, but her skin didn't quite match her appearance, perhaps a disguise," said the anonymous source quoted in the EFCC statement. |

United continues to take hits from stocks, loyalty members and fellow airline Posted: 12 Apr 2017 02:42 AM PDT Stocks have plunged at United Airlines, frequent flier members are cutting up their loyalty cards, a competing airline has thrown shade at United in a bold new ad, and the incident has traveled around the world and reached the highest levels of governments. On April 11, Emirates posted a snarky and rather audacious video on Twitter, getting back at United CEO Oscar Munoz who is cited as having said "Those [Gulf] airlines aren't airlines," back in March. |

Russia blocks U.N. Security Council condemnation of Syria attack Posted: 12 Apr 2017 06:32 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Russia blocked a Western-led effort at the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday to condemn last week's deadly gas attack in Syria and push Moscow's ally President Bashar al-Assad to cooperate with international inquiries into the incident. It was the eighth time during Syria's six-year-old civil war that Moscow has used its veto power on the Security Council to shield Assad's government. |

United States' first female Muslim judge found dead in Hudson River Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:41 PM PDT Sheila Abdus-Salaam, a 65-year-old associate judge of New York's highest court, was found floating off Manhattan's west side at about 1:45 p.m. EDT (1545 GMT), a police spokesman said. Police pulled Abdus-Salaam's fully clothed body from the water and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Abdus-Salaam, a native of Washington, D.C., became the first African-American woman appointed to the Court of Appeals when Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo named her to the state's high court in 2013. |
New Burger King ad tricks ‘OK Google’ voice assistant on purpose, Google shuts it down Posted: 12 Apr 2017 01:16 PM PDT Voice-activated assistants like Siri and Alexa offer the ultimate in convenience since you can access a wealth of info and powerful usability features with nothing but a few spoken words. Unfortunately, that ease of use also makes them particularly vulnerable to trolling, and while you might expect such shenanigans from a bored friend, you probably won't be prepared for a Burger King commercial to attempt a hijack of your know-it-all speaker. Unfortunately, that's exactly what was about to happen, before Google stepped in to save the day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_O54le4__I The ad, which suggests that because the Whopper is just such an awesome menu item it can't be fully described in such a short ad slot, ends with a Burger King restaurant employee saying "Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?" If you happen to have a Google Home speaker nearby, or even an Android device like a smartphone or tablet with the voice command enabled, the goofy ad would have prompted your gadget to begin reciting the Whopper description from Wikipedia. That is, if Google hadn't seen the ad for itself and pushed a hotfix that prevents the ad from triggering anything. It's a funny trick, at least in concept, but in reality the idea of an advertisement prompting one of your own devices to continue the ad in a different form is really, really obnoxious. That sentiment seems to be carrying over to Burger King's YouTube comments section and ratings, too, as it now has a negative overall like/dislike ratio as well as plenty of complaints from, well, pretty much everyone. Would-be customers with an already establish distrust of advertising aren't likely to find this kind of thing all that entertaining. |
Trump sees global gains from 'chemistry' with China's Xi Posted: 12 Apr 2017 04:43 PM PDT President Donald Trump waxed lyrical about his good "chemistry" and "bonding" with Chinese leader Xi Jinping Wednesday -- a rhetorical U-turn which the White House believes is already paying dividends. Putting harsh campaign rhetoric about China's "rape" of the US economy in the rear-view mirror, Trump went out of his way to praise Xi for help on North Korea and Syria. Trump hosted China's leader -- the most powerful in decades -- at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last week, and the pair spoke again by phone on Tuesday. |

Dina Ali Lasloom said in self-recorded videos the Philippine authorities had held her at the Manila airport and confiscated her passport. "My name is Dina Ali and I'm a Saudi woman who fled Saudi Arabia to Australia to seek asylum," she said in one video, adding she feared violence from any relatives who came to bring her back home. |
Taiwan bans eating dogs and cats Posted: 12 Apr 2017 03:33 AM PDT Taiwan has banned the eating of dogs and cats, lawmakers said Wednesday. The bill also hiked the penalty for killing or abusing animals to a maximum two-year jail term and a stiff fine of Tw$2 million, more than doubling that for repeat offenders. "This shows that Taiwan is a society with advanced animal welfare," said lawmaker Wang Yu-min who proposed the amendment. |
What changes under Turkey's new constitution plan Posted: 11 Apr 2017 09:05 PM PDT Turkey on Sunday votes in a landmark referendum on a new constitution that would grant President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expanded powers. While critics say the move is part of a grab by Erdogan for one-man rule, supporters say it will simply put Turkey in line with France and the United States and is needed for efficient government. The current constitution was adopted in 1982 after the 1980 military coup. |

Mosul zoo's last two animals reach safer ground in Jordan Posted: 12 Apr 2017 06:57 AM PDT The last two surviving animals from Mosul's dilapidated zoo arrived this week at an animal shelter in Jordan, after months of malnutrition and a long journey out of Iraq that included being stuck at the border for 12 days. Simba the lion and Lola the bear lived in a once-peaceful animal park that has been destroyed by months of fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic State militants. The park, located in Eastern Mosul, was retaken by Iraqi forces earlier this year. Amir Khalil, a vet from animal charity Four Paws who saw the animals in Mosul in February and organized their transfer to Jordan, said the animals were in a dire state. |

Spicer says he let Trump down with comments comparing Assad and Hitler Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:56 AM PDT White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Wednesday he had let down President Donald Trump with his "inexcusable and reprehensible" comments comparing the use of poison gas by Syria's president to the atrocities of Adolf Hitler. "On both a personal level and a professional level that will definitely go down as not a very good day in my history," he added. Spicer triggered an uproar at a White House briefing on Tuesday while discussing chemical weapons use by the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying that even Hitler did not use chemical weapons during World War Two. |
Deepest Life on Earth May Be Lurking 6 Miles Beneath Ocean Floor Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:15 AM PDT A host of hardy microbes may be living miles beneath the ocean floor, new research suggests. Complex chemical compounds found in the rocks spewed from oceanic mud volcanoes suggest microbial life-forms may be dwelling some 32,800 feet (10,000 meters) beneath the seafloor. "Although we cannot pinpoint the exact origin of the organic matter, chemical analysis of the constituents resembles molecular signatures that could be produced by microbial life deep within or below the mud volcano," the researchers wrote in the study. |

Will Honda bring clarity or confusion to the electric vehicle market with its latest cars? Posted: 13 Apr 2017 06:38 AM PDT Japanese carmaker Honda has set itself a huge target of selling 75,000 electrified cars in the US within the next four years and it believes that the key to meeting that goal is to offer buyers a range of three very different types of plug-in car, all called Clarity. Clarity is the name Honda bestowed on its Hydrogen Fuel Cell car, which has been available for lease in the US since 2016. At this week's New York Auto Show it has turned the name into a three-car range by lunching the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and the Clarity Electric, both of which look similar to the fuel cell original but are very different beneath the skin. |

Wall Street's 'Charging Bull' artist challenges 'Fearless Girl' sculpture Posted: 12 Apr 2017 12:13 PM PDT The sculptor of Wall Street's "Charging Bull" statue is seeing red over New York City's decision to keep in place the "Fearless Girl" sculpture that now stares it down, saying the adjacent art has changed the meaning of his work and violated his legal rights. The city's ruling to let the bronze depiction of a defiant girl remain until February 2018 just feet from the bull's flaring nostrils should be reviewed, said a lawyer for sculptor Arturo Di Modica. "How did the process happen and should permits be revoked?" the attorney, Norman Siegel, said in an interview on Wednesday, adding that his client ought to have been consulted. |
