Sichuan Airlines co-pilot 'sucked halfway' out of cockpit, captain says Posted: 15 May 2018 01:20 AM PDT By Brenda Goh SHANGHAI (Reuters) - The co-pilot of a Sichuan Airlines flight that was forced to make an emergency landing on Monday was "sucked halfway" out of the plane after a cockpit windshield blew out, media reported, citing the aircraft's captain. Liu Chuanjian, hailed a hero on social media after having to land the Airbus A319 manually, told the Chengdu Economic Daily his aircraft had just reached a cruising altitude of 32,000 feet when a deafening sound tore through the cockpit. The cockpit experienced a sudden loss of pressure and drop in temperature and when he looked over, the cockpit's right windshield was gone. |

Navy Aircraft Carriers Might Just Be Unsinkable. Here's Why. Posted: 15 May 2018 08:10 AM PDT The bottom line on aircraft carrier survivability is that only a handful of countries can credibly pose a threat to America's most valuable warships, and short of using nuclear weapons none of those is likely to sink one. Although the Navy has changed it tactics to deal with the proliferation of fast anti-ship missiles and the growing military power of China in the Western Pacific, large-deck aircraft carriers remain among the most secure and useful combat systems in America's arsenal. With the unlimited range and flexibility afforded by nuclear propulsion, there are few places they can't go to enforce U.S. interests. And at the rate the Navy is investing in new warfighting technologies, that is likely to remain true for many decades to come. Large-deck, nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are the signature expression of American military power. No other combat system available to U.S. warfighters comes close to delivering so much offensive punch for months at a time without requiring land bases near the action. As a result, the ten carriers in the current fleet are in continuous demand from regional commanders -- so much so that extended overseas combat tours are becoming the norm. |

Republican gubernatorial candidate drives 'deportation bus’ around Georgia Posted: 15 May 2018 10:14 AM PDT A Republican candidate for governor of Georgia is driving a "deportation bus" around the state, promising to fill it with undocumented immigrants and "send them back to where they came from". Michael Williams –a Georgia state senator and, according to his website, the first elected official in the state to endorse Donald Trump – announced this week that he would drive a bus around the state to raise awareness of the "overwhelming problem of illegal immigration". "Throughout his bus tour of sanctuary cities, Williams will expose how dangerous illegal aliens ruin local economies, cost American jobs, increase healthcare costs, and lower education standards," a statement on his Facebook page reads. |
Thousands of North Carolina public school teachers march in Raleigh Posted: 16 May 2018 02:50 PM PDT Thousands of North Carolina teachers swarmed the state legislature on Wednesday to call for pay raises and more spending on schools, making the state the country's sixth to be roiled by educators demanding better funding. Hundreds of teachers in red T-shirts filled a spectators gallery and chanted "remember, remember, we vote in November" as the Republican-controlled General Assembly started its session. The protest prompted at least 38 districts, representing more than half the state's 1.5 million public school students, to cancel classes. |

Gap 'terribly sorry' over T-shirt China map without Taiwan Posted: 14 May 2018 08:38 PM PDT US clothing retailer Gap has apologised to China over a T-shirt with a map showing the mainland but omitting Taiwan, becoming the latest foreign firm to run afoul of Beijing's policy on the self-ruling island. China, which considers Taiwan a rebel province awaiting reunification, has taken airlines, hotels and other companies to task in recent months for listing the island as a separate country on their websites. The Gap shirt, which was sold in overseas markets, features a map of China, but Taiwan does not appear to the southeast of the country, according to a photo of the company's online store posted on the Twitter account of the official People's Daily newspaper. |

Putin says Russian frigates in Mediterranean on standby over Syria threat Posted: 16 May 2018 06:06 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russian military vessels with Kalibr cruise missiles would be on permanent standby in the Mediterranean to counter what he said was the terrorist threat in Syria. The deployment shows how Russia has increased its military presence in the Middle East since it launched an intervention in Syria in 2015, turning the tide of the civil war in favor of its close ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Russia has in the past fired Kalibr cruise missiles from frigates and submarines stationed in the Mediterranean Sea at militant targets to support Syrian army offensives. |
Ecuador spied on Assange at London embassy: report Posted: 16 May 2018 02:13 AM PDT Ecuador spied on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy where he has been living since 2012, initially to support him but things changed after he hacked the mission's computers, the Guardian reported Wednesday. The newspaper said Ecuador employed an international security company and undercover agents to monitor his visitors, embassy staff and even the British police at the embassy in London's luxury Knightsbridge area. The snooping was initially intended to protect Assange from the risk of being taken away by British police but later became a full-blown spying operation. |
Palestinians clash with Israeli forces on 70th anniversary of the Nakba (“catastrophe”) Posted: 15 May 2018 09:18 AM PDT Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces in the occupied West Bank and at the Israeli-Gaza border in the Gaza Strip, during protests marking the anniversary of the Nakba, or "catastrophe," when more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were expelled in the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation. The protests were also a response to the United States' relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. (Getty Images) |

Now, of course, you go on US celebrity gossip website TMZ. And there in glaring headlines you find a story, not of family joy at a forthcoming wedding, but of pain and suffering – much of it heaped on Meghan Markle's 73-year-old father Thomas. You could, as one newspaper has, call it "a rollercoaster of speculation surrounding whether Mr Markle would attend Saturday's royal wedding at Windsor Castle in Berkshire". |

Do China's Missiles in the South China Sea Mean War? Posted: 15 May 2018 04:29 AM PDT Or has Beijing now cemented its claim? Do China's Missiles in the South China Sea Mean War? The South China Sea China has the potential to become a cauldron of conflict, and China is stoking the fire. By claiming perhaps as much as 90% of the South China Sea, Beijing is trampling on the rights of other nations in the region, nations whose Exclusion Economic Zones (EEZs) and national waters are being violated. |
U.S. judge refuses to dismiss ex-Trump aide Manafort's criminal case Posted: 15 May 2018 03:39 PM PDT By Sarah N. Lynch WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A federal judge dealt President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort a major blow on Tuesday by refusing to dismiss criminal charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, after Manafort claimed that Mueller's probe has run amok and should be reined in. In a sharp rebuke of those claims, Judge Amy Berman Jackson of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had followed all the Justice Department's rules when he hired Mueller and Mueller's case against Manafort is not overly broad or improper. |

Meghan Markle brings geraniums back into fashion by picking blooms for wedding Posted: 16 May 2018 09:19 AM PDT They are ever-reliable, unshowy and, much to the chagrin of their dedicated fans, rather unfashionable. But the geranium is set for a major comeback, it seems. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have selected white Mayflower and Dusky Cranesbill geraniums, grown in the Royal Parks nursery, to join the floral displays at their wedding on Saturday. Even the gardener in charge of growing the plants, along with countless others, does not know how they will end up on display after months of hard work in London's Hyde Park. Nursery manager Mike Jones said he does not know where floral designer Philippa Craddock will use his flowers, so will be trying to spot them as he watches the wedding on TV. "We don't know where they're going to be, so we'll be eagerly looking out ourselves to see where they are," Mr Jones said. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement photograph Credit: Paul Grover for the Telegraph Asked if he felt under pressure, the 58-year-old from Leamington Spa said: "We do, because we really want it to be the best we can possibly do. It's showcasing not only our growing of plants, but the Royal Parks in general." It is thought the flowers - between 150 and 200 individual plants which are pollinator-friendly - will be incorporated into Ms Craddock's displays in and around St George's Chapel which will feature white garden roses, peonies and foxgloves. Branches of beech, birch and hornbeam will also be used in the decorations, with the locally sourced foliage coming from the gardens and parkland of The Crown Estate and Windsor Great Park. The flowers that have been chosen are particularly pollinator-friendly flowers, which means they have a good store of nectarDr Alice Laughton Mr Jones said geraniums "add a splash of colour", adding: "They live for years so they will grow all summer, flower all summer, die down in the winter, and then come back again the following year, so very good value." The gardener said they were ideal for "a relaxed look". Asked if the flowers will be getting special treatment in the coming days, he said: "They'll be getting a lot of TLC. We'll be making sure they're watered well, making sure they're protected, and making sure that the flowers stay in the perfect condition for the day. "It's only a few more days to go, so we want them to be absolutely pristine when they go." A bumblebee hovers over Dusky Cranesbill geranium plants Credit: REUTERS Looking ahead to Saturday, Mr Jones said: "I shall be watching the wedding along with half the rest of the country I would imagine. Looking out for my plants." Dr Alice Laughton, conservation manager at the Royal Parks, explained the importance of the flowers being pollinator-friendly, and what that might mean. "The flowers that have been chosen are particularly pollinator-friendly flowers, which means they have a good store of nectar so they provide a lot of food for pollinators that are attracted to the flowers. "So on wedding day we might see some bees, some bumblebees, hoverflies, some butterflies, all important pollinators here in the UK," she said. The 36-year-old, from Bourn in Cambridgeshire, added: "We're really excited. We work really hard to try and champion pollinators and support them because they're in decline." Royal wedding PREMIUM GRID Dr Laughton is also excited for another reason - she is getting married this Saturday too. "I like to think that all the wedding buzz is about my wedding so it's been quite fun," she said. Talking about the flowers at her own wedding, she said: "My parents actually have grown all my flowers, so they've grown native pollinator-friendly flowers as well." |

Iran upbeat on nuclear deal hopes after EU talks Posted: 15 May 2018 08:15 AM PDT Iran's foreign minister said Tuesday that efforts to save the nuclear deal after the abrupt US withdrawal were "on the right track" as he began talks with European powers in Brussels. Mohammad Javad Zarif met EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini ahead of evening talks with his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany -- the three European signatories to the 2015 landmark accord who are scrambling to preserve it. Tehran has warned it is prepared to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite the United States reimposing sanctions. |

Taliban battle into west Afghan city in new crisis for government Posted: 15 May 2018 12:09 PM PDT By Storay Karimi and Mohammad Stanekzai HERAT, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Taliban fighters with heavy weapons and night-vision equipment fought their way close to the center of the western city of Farah on Tuesday, as Afghan forces with U.S. air support battled to force them back, officials and residents said. Residents of the city, capital of Farah province on the border with Iran, have warned for months the city was vulnerable and the attack threatened a repeat of the Taliban's capture of the northern city of Kunduz in 2015. Local people said Taliban forces began their attack at around 2.00 a.m. (2130 GMT Monday) from several directions and a senior official said the situation was serious early in the day as the insurgents overran several areas and the provincial governor left the city. |

Merkel defends nuclear deal, Iran says won't 'surrender' to U.S. Posted: 16 May 2018 04:01 AM PDT By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin LONDON (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushed back on Wednesday against Washington's rejection of the Iran nuclear deal, saying the accord helped outside powers worried about Tehran's regional role to pursue their concerns with the Islamic Republic. Iran reiterated it would not surrender to U.S. pressure and would resist U.S. "plots", following President Donald Trump's abandonment of the 2015 agreement last week. Repudiating the result of more than a decade of diplomacy, Trump complained that the deal does not cover Iran's ballistic missiles, its role in regional wars or what happens after the pact begins to expire in 2025. |
