The Final Countdown: Jon Stewart Ends His Historic Run Just in Time Posted: 03 Aug 2015 02:37 PM PDT In February, when Jon Stewart announced his retirement from The Daily Show, the 2016 election seemed like it would be a tedious 20-month-long slog. As the fight about Hillary Clinton's email servers raged, Stewart seemed to be done already. No one could have predicted the three-ring circus that Donald Trump (and the ensuing attempts to out-Trump Trump) would create by entering the race. |
1,500 schools damaged or destroyed in Iraq's Anbar Posted: 03 Aug 2015 02:22 PM PDT More than 1,500 schools have been damaged or destroyed as a result of the conflict in Iraq's troubled Anbar province alone, a spokesman said Monday. Anbar is Iraq's largest province. It has been rocked by violence since the beginning of 2014, months before the Islamic State jihadist group launched a massive nationwide offensive that saw it conquer swathes of the country. |

Turkey vows 'whatever necessary' in fight against militants Posted: 03 Aug 2015 01:40 PM PDT President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday vowed to do "whatever necessary" in Turkey's controversial fight against Kurdish militants, with no end in sight to a two-week cycle of violence. Ankara is waging a two-pronged cross-border "anti-terror" offensive to bomb Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria and Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels in northern Iraq, after a wave of attacks in the country. Erdogan told reporters returning with him from a trip to Asia that the Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq should be taking action against the PKK bases there. |
US begins armed drone flights from Turkey Posted: 03 Aug 2015 12:55 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military is expanding its combat role in Syria in defense of coalition-backed rebels, conducting armed drone missions into Syria from an air base in Turkey and imposing new rules allowing the U.S. to defend rebels against attacks from any hostile force, including the Assad government. |

Lavrov: U.S. raids on Syria government would hurt counter-terrorism effort Posted: 03 Aug 2015 10:22 AM PDT Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that any U.S. military strikes in Syria that hit the army would complicate counter-terrorism efforts there. U.S. officials said on Sunday that the United States had decided to allow air strikes to defend Syrian rebels trained by the U.S. military from any attackers, even if the enemies hail from forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Speaking at a news conference on a visit to Qatar, Lavrov, whose country is an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said a settlement to Syria's war needed dialogue between all parties. |
Activists hail slavery pledge inclusion in new U.N. development goals Posted: 03 Aug 2015 10:20 AM PDT By Emma Batha LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The decision to include a pledge to eradicate slavery at the heart of a new global development pact is a major victory but there is a long way to go, campaigners against trafficking and slavery said on Monday. Although slavery is illegal in every country, almost 36 million people are enslaved worldwide, the Walk Free Foundation estimates. The 193 United Nations member states agreed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Sunday which will shape development and poverty eradication efforts for the next 15 years, replacing eight Millennium Development Goals. |

In Iraq, 21 strikes hit areas near Mosul, Tal Afar, Ramadi, al Huwayja and other cities, hitting units of Islamic State fighters as well as militants' vehicles, bunkers, fighting positions and other targets. Eight strikes targeted the group near al Hasaka and two other Syrian cities, according to the statement released on Monday. ... |
Turkey, Kurd rebels gear up for return to all-out conflict Posted: 03 Aug 2015 09:35 AM PDT LICE, Turkey (AP) — The military helicopters swooped in over the Kurdish heartland and dropped white incendiary powder on a raging brush fire — igniting a massive conflagration that raced through the mountains, devouring orchards and livestock. For Kurds living in nearby Lice, the recent Turkish operation brought back memories of the traumatic days in the 1990s when the army twice burned the town to the ground. |
Iraqi Kurdish leader vows to avenge Yazidis Posted: 03 Aug 2015 08:31 AM PDT The president of Iraq's autonomous region of Kurdistan, Massud Barzani, promised Monday to avenge the Yazidi minority brutally attacked by the Islamic State group a year ago. "We will hunt down those who committed this crime until the last one," Barzani said in Dohuk at a ceremony commemorating the beginning of the jihadist onslaught against the Yazidis. A Kurdish-speaking minority mostly based around the Sinjar mountain in northern Iraq, the Yazidis are neither Arabs nor Muslims and have a unique faith which IS considers to be polytheism. |
The 2016 U.S. Presidential Race: A Cheat Sheet Posted: 03 Aug 2015 08:23 AM PDT Most Democrats seem ready for Hillary Clinton—or at least appear content with her candidacy. While his boss hasn't endorsed Clinton—and says he won't endorse in the primary—many members of the Obama administration have gone to work for Clinton, including some close to Biden. One reason Biden didn't get into the race was that his son Beau was dying of cancer, and the vice president was focused on being with his son. |
PKK claims deadly suicide attack on Turkish troops Posted: 03 Aug 2015 08:15 AM PDT The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on Monday said one of its guerrillas carried out a deadly suicide bombing against troops in eastern Turkey as a reprisal for the alleged bombing of a civilian village. The PKK said the attack was carried out by a "martyr" with the nom-de-guerre of Andok Eris, publishing a picture of him with his face concealed by a scarf. The attack came as Turkish jets pound targets of the PKK in northern Iraq in a broad "anti-terror" campaign which has also seen the outlawed group step up attacks inside Turkey. |
Memphis shooting: What do we know about Tremaine Wilbourn? Posted: 03 Aug 2015 07:28 AM PDT The man who shot and killed a police officer in Memphis this weekend is a 29-year-old convicted bank robber, local authorities said Sunday. Second top Iraqi oil official shot dead in Kirkuk: police Posted: 03 Aug 2015 06:30 AM PDT Gunmen shot dead a senior official working for Iraq's North Oil Company (NOC) on Monday, police and company officials said, just over a month after his predecessor at the state-run firm was gunned down. Chief engineer Saad Ali Hussain was driving to his office in the northern oil city of Kirkuk when gunmen in a sports utility vehicle opened fire, killing him and his driver, police Brigadier Sarhat Qadir said. Hussain was appointed NOC's chief of operations after his predecessor was shot dead in late June as he was leaving the office. |

Turkey's Erdogan says Putin may 'give up' on Assad Posted: 03 Aug 2015 02:06 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin is having a change of heart on the Kremlin's wholehearted support for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad and may "give up on him" in the future, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying Monday. When asked if Putin could be persuaded not to support Assad, Erdogan said he saw his counterpart as "more positive" during a face-to-face meeting in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku in June and in subsequent telephone talks. "Putin's current attitude toward Syria is more encouraging than before," Erdogan told a group of journalists on his presidential jet as he returned from a trip to Asia. |
Turkey's main opposition accuses Erdogan of blocking coalition efforts Posted: 03 Aug 2015 01:34 AM PDT By Humeyra Pamuk ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's main opposition leader has accused President Tayyip Erdogan of blocking efforts to form a coalition government and warned him against taking the country to new elections through "blood politics" by reopening conflict with Kurdish militants. The ruling AK Party, founded by Erdogan, holds its final day of initial talks with the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP) on Monday as it tries to find a junior coalition partner after losing its parliamentary majority in a June election. The domestic uncertainty comes as Turkey carries out air strikes against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) camps in northern Iraq and Islamic State fighters in Syria, in what the government has called a "synchronized fight against terror". |

Kerry says United States, Egypt return to 'stronger base' in ties Posted: 02 Aug 2015 08:11 PM PDT By David Brunnstrom CAIRO (Reuters) - The United States and Egypt are returning to a "stronger base" in bilateral ties despite tensions and human rights concerns, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday after talks with his Egyptian counterpart. "Egypt remains vital ... to engagement and stability in the region as a whole," said Kerry, who held the first bilateral strategic dialogue since 2009. "There are obviously circumstances where we have found reason to have grave concern and we have expressed it very publicly," he said at a news conference with Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri. |
