Regional strife hands Iran, Gulf states role in Iraq vote Posted: 27 Apr 2014 12:11 PM PDT When Iraqis go to the polls in Wednesday's general election, regional strife could make neighbouring Iran, former occupier the US, Gulf nations and Syria silent voters as well, analysts believe. The election is the first since American troops withdrew in late 2011, and since then US influence has waned while Iran has acquired more clout inside its Arab neighbour. The conflict in Syria between President Bashar al-Assad and mostly Sunni rebels that erupted in March 2011 has also spilled over the border, and could influence the election outcome. "Elections in Iraq are taking place amid a raging regional conflict, with Syria as its main source, and Iraq is not far from this conflict," said Issam al-Faili, professor of political history at Baghdad's Mustansiriyah University. |

Sectarian strife threatens Iraq ahead of election Posted: 27 Apr 2014 09:02 AM PDT By Ned Parker, Ahmed Rasheed and Raheem Salman BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Sunni militants who seized the riverside town of Buhriz late last month stayed for several hours. The next morning, after the Sunnis had left, Iraqi security forces and dozens of Shi'ite militia fighters arrived and marched from home to home in search of insurgents and sympathizers in this rural community, dotted by date palms and orange groves. According to accounts by Shi'ite tribal leaders, two eyewitnesses and politicians, what happened next was brutal. They pulled out the young men and summarily executed them." The killings turned this town 35 miles northeast of Baghdad into a frontline in Iraq's gathering sectarian war. |
