Dog fight: Start-ups take aim at errant drones Posted: 02 Jan 2017 05:29 PM PST A boom in consumer drone sales has spawned a counter-industry of start-ups aiming to stop drones flying where they shouldn't, by disabling them or knocking them out of the sky. Dozens of start-up firms are developing techniques - from deploying birds of prey to firing gas through a bazooka - to take on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are being used to smuggle drugs, drop bombs, spy on enemy lines or buzz public spaces. The arms race is fed in part by the slow pace of government regulation for drones. |

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car on a square in Baghdad's Sadr City neighbourhood, killing at least 32 people in the latest attack on the Iraqi capital claimed by IS. Later the interior ministry said jihadist gunmen wearing suicide vests stormed a police station in the city of Samarra north of Baghdad, sparking clashes. |

U.S. general sees Islamic State's capability waning in east Mosul Posted: 02 Jan 2017 10:02 AM PST By Stephen Kalin ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - The declining effectiveness of Islamic State attacks against Iraqi forces in eastern Mosul suggests the militants are starting to run out of resources with the campaign in its third month, a U.S. general told Reuters. Since the U.S.-backed offensive began on Oct. 17, elite troops have retaken a quarter of the city in the biggest ground operation in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. The second phase of the campaign, launched last week following nearly a month of deadlock, has pushed Islamic State out of several more areas in eastern Mosul despite fierce resistance. |

The statement by the extremist group -- which Turkey is fighting in neighbouring Syria -- was the first undisputed claim it has made for an attack in Turkey despite being blamed for several assaults over the last year. Anti-terror police made their first arrests over the attack, which unleashed scenes of panic among party-goers at one of Istanbul's swankiest venues and killed mostly foreign tourists. |

The Combined Joint Task Force, in its monthly assessment of civilian casualties from the U.S. coalition's operations against the militant group, said it was still assessing five reports of unintentional deaths from four strikes in 2016 and one from 2015. The military's overall estimate was far below those of other outside groups, such as Air Wars, which monitors civilian deaths from international air strikes in the region. |

All of these demographic changes have huge implications for cities and communities," says Alana Officer, senior health adviser at the WHO. |
IS claims latest deadly Baghdad attack Posted: 02 Jan 2017 05:35 AM PST The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a suicide car bomb attack that killed at least 32 people Monday in Baghdad. In Iraq, Hollande vows to tackle foreign fighters and their children Posted: 02 Jan 2017 03:46 AM PST By Elizabeth Pineau BAGHDAD (Reuters) - France will fight any French jihadists it finds on the battlefields of Iraq, arrest them if they return home and work to de-radicalize their children, President Francois Hollande said on a visit to Baghdad on Monday. There are about 60 French citizens fighting alongside Islamic State militants in the northern city of Mosul alone and hundreds more in the rest of the country and Syria, French diplomatic sources said.
