Gorsuch calls same-sex marriage decision ‘settled law’ Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:31 PM PDT Judge Neil Gorsuch referred to the Supreme Court's recent same-sex marriage decision as "settled law," using a stronger phrase than he has for other legal precedents. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., asked Gorsuch to explain how his views on marriage equality have changed since 2004, when the George W. Bush administration was pushing for ballot initiatives that banned the practice in states. Gorsuch replied that sharing his "personal views" would send a misleading signal to the American people that he might be inclined to rule one way or another on future cases that come up on the subject. |

Franken calls Gorsuch dissent in trucker case ‘absurd’ Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:53 PM PDT Minnesota Sen. Al Franken recalled his comedic past in a contentious exchange with Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch Tuesday during the judge's confirmation hearing. Franken was questioning Gorsuch on the case of Alphonse Maddin, a trucker who was fired after his trailer broke down in subzero temperatures. Gorsuch concluded in a dissent that it wasn't illegal for the company to fire Maddin for seeking safety, writing that "it might be fair to ask whether TransAm's decision was a wise or kind one, but it's not our job to answer questions like that. |
Two dead, others injured in UK parliament 'terrorist incident' Posted: 22 Mar 2017 09:55 AM PDT By Toby Melville and William James LONDON (Reuters) - An assailant stabbed a policeman and was shot by police just outside Britain's parliament building in London on Wednesday in what police described as a "terrorist incident". Amid confusing scenes, it appeared the incident may have unfolded in several locations, including on the nearby Westminster bridge where eyewitnesses said a car had crashed into pedestrians. Two people died in the incident, according to Sky News, but the total number of casualties was unclear. |
Ex-Clinton staffer: 8,000 millennial Democrats have told our new group they want to run for office Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:03 PM PDT On Election Day 2016, people vote at a polling place set up at the Kenter Canyon Elementary School in Los Angeles. A postelection political action committee founded by the email director of the Hillary Clinton campaign to encourage millennial Democrats to run for state and local offices reports that more than 8,000 people have taken the first step toward becoming candidates. Contacted by Yahoo News, Run for Something founder Amanda Litman explained what she thought was behind that astonishing number. |
A teen made a website where kittens punch Trump. So, Trump unleashed his lawyers. Posted: 22 Mar 2017 06:00 AM PDT President Trump is busy this week helping to make sure millions of Americans don't lose their health insuran — -sorry, I mean, shutting down a teenage girl. 17-year-old Lucy from San Francisco recently designed a site called Kittenfeed.com (initially called TrumpScratch), where users get to punch Trump's face with tiny little kitchen paws. It seemed like a pretty harmless, anti-Trump site (the kittens don't even scratch!) — until she got a letter from the lawyers of a certain "well known businessman," The Observer reports. SEE ALSO: People can't stop sharing this cartoon about Trump's 'Muslim ban' That "internationally known" and "famous" businessman (his lawyers words, not mine) is, of course, Donald Trump. In the letter, Trump's general counsel encourages the teen to cease and desist and shut down the website. Image: www.kittenfeed.com After receiving the letter, Lucy decided to change the name of the website to Kittenfeed.com. That wasn't enough for Trump's counsel, who reportedly continued to press the 17-year-old girl. The family is waiting to see their next move. "It's so sad that his administration is focused more on being liked, burying real news and taking down sites like mine as they supposedly make him look bad," Lucy told The Observer. Predictably, Trump's lawyers letter had the opposite effect of their intention. After The Observer published the report yesterday, the site's visitors surged from 3,000 to 50,000. Lesson: you can mess with Trump's lawyers, but don't you ever touch an animated kitten. WATCH: Robotic glove lets people with limited hand mobility perform daily tasks |

Newly restored shrine at Jesus's tomb unveiled Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:20 AM PDT The newly restored shrine surrounding what is believed to be Jesus's tomb was unveiled at a ceremony in Jerusalem Wednesday following months of delicate work and in time for crowds of Easter visitors. Religious leaders in traditional robes addressed a ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified and buried. Dignitaries including Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I, considered the spiritual head of Orthodox church leaders, were in attendance. |

Exclusive: Tillerson urges Senate ratification of Montenegro's NATO membership Posted: 21 Mar 2017 06:04 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has written to the leaders of the U.S. Senate urging the ratification of Montenegro as the newest member of the NATO alliance, saying it is "strongly in the interests of the United States." In a letter dated March 7 and seen by Reuters on Tuesday, Tillerson argued that Montenegro's membership in the alliance would support greater integration, democratic reform, trade, security and stability among its neighbors. Moscow opposes any further expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the delay in U.S. approval of Montenegro's accession has fueled questions about whether President Donald Trump's administration and his Republican Party will stand up to Russia despite Trump's desire for better relations. |

Attack outside the Houses of Parliament in London Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:39 AM PDT A policeman was stabbed, an assailant shot and several people injured on Wednesday close to Britain's Houses of Parliament in what police said they were treating as a terrorist incident. Reuters reporters inside the building heard loud bangs and shortly afterwards a Reuters photographer said he saw at least a dozen people injured on Westminster Bridge, next to parliament. "Officers – including firearms officers – remain on the scene and we are treating this as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise," London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement. |

Over-excited little girl steals the Pope's hat off his head Posted: 22 Mar 2017 08:15 AM PDT Little kids have 10 times the energy most adults have. Put them in contact with a famous person, and anything can happen. MountainButorac, a Catholic blogger, recently took his goddaughter to see Pope Francis II in Rome. And the lucky little one didn't just get to see him, she got close enough to receive a kiss from the head of the Catholic Church. But she wanted so much more than that. Overwhelmed by energy, she reached out, desperate to discharge it somewhere, and pulled the Pope's hat off his head. SEE ALSO: Little kid aims his pro stink eye at a chip thief The Pope's hat is technically called a zucchetto. And he actually seemed to enjoy the moment, or at least have enough social skills to feign enthusiasm. Watch the full interaction and rejoice! The internet has risen! Gorsuch: I would have ‘walked out the door’ if Trump had asked me to overturn Roe Posted: 21 Mar 2017 11:37 AM PDT Judge Neil Gorsuch said he was never asked by President Trump to promise to overturn the landmark Supreme Court case protecting a woman's right to an abortion and would have promptly walked out on the president if he had. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., asked Gorsuch on the second day of his confirmation hearing if the president had ever made Gorsuch promise to vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court. |
Mexico warns firms not in their interest to build border wall Posted: 22 Mar 2017 01:32 AM PDT By Anthony Esposito MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's government on Tuesday warned Mexican companies that it would not be in their best "interests" to participate in the construction of U.S. President Donald Trump's border wall, though there will be no legal restrictions or sanctions to stop them if they tried. While some Mexican companies stand to potentially benefit from the controversial infrastructure project, residents south of the border view the wall and Trump's repeated calls to have Mexico pay for it as offensive. |

Face recognition flushes out China's toilet paper crooks Posted: 21 Mar 2017 02:41 AM PDT A years-long crime spree by Chinese toilet paper thieves may have reached the end of its roll after park officials in southern Beijing installed facial recognition technology to flush out bathroom bandits. Park managers at the Temple of Heaven, an expanse of imperial landmarks in the capital, spent three years testing ways to foil the toilet looters, including fingerprinting and laser sensors, before they settled on the new technology, which was introduced over the weekend. Elderly square dancers taking their bathroom breaks on Tuesday were greeted by a robotic voice: "Welcome! Please stand in the recognition zone". |

China denies reports of building on disputed shoal Posted: 22 Mar 2017 02:19 AM PDT China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday denied reports that China will begin preparatory work this year for an environmental monitoring station on disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. China seized the shoal, which is northeast of the Spratly islands, in 2012 and denied access to Philippine fishermen. Earlier this month, Xiao Jie, the mayor of what China calls Sansha City, said China planned to begin preparatory work this year to build environmental monitoring stations on a number of islands, including Scarborough Shoal. |
Correction: Israel-Jesus Tomb Restoration story Posted: 21 Mar 2017 01:01 PM PDT JERUSALEM (AP) — In a story March 20 about renovations at the tomb of Jesus, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the Edicule is revered by Christians as the site where Jesus rose to heaven. Iraqi forces try to bring civilians out of west Mosul, U.S. pledges more support Posted: 21 Mar 2017 07:23 AM PDT By Patrick Markey MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi government forces attempted to evacuate civilians from Mosul's Islamic State-held Old City on Tuesday so that troops could clear the area, but militant snipers hampered the effort, Iraqi officers said. They said the insurgents were also using civilians as human shields as government units edged toward the al-Nuri Mosque, the focus of recent fighting in the five-month-long campaign to crush Islamic State in the city that was once the de facto capital of their self-proclaimed Islamic caliphate. As many as 600,000 civilians remain in the western sector of Mosul, complicating a battle being fought with artillery and air strikes as well as ground combat. Thousands have escaped in recent days. "Our forces control around 60 percent of the west now," Defence Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Rasool told a news conference in eastern Mosul. |

Ghana shuts tourist site where 20 died in freak tree accident Posted: 21 Mar 2017 06:43 AM PDT Ghanaian authorities have closed the popular tourist destination of Kintampo Falls after 20 people died in a tree fall tragedy, officials said Monday. A group of high school and university students were swimming on Sunday afternoon at the picturesque waterfalls in the Brong-Ahafo region, some 450 kilometres (281 miles) by road from the capital Accra, when a massive tree crashed into the water, crushing some to death and injuries scores of others. "The National Disaster Management Organisation and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture have in consultation with the Brong Ahafo Regional Security Council ordered the indefinite closure of the Kintampo waterfalls," tourism minister spokesman Frank Siaw-Otu said in a statement. |
