Latin American states urge Venezuelan soldiers to abandon loyalty to regime and let in aid

Posted: 05 Feb 2019 03:40 AM PST

Latin American states urge Venezuelan soldiers to abandon loyalty to regime and let in aidA coalition of Latin American nations is urging Venezuela's military to allow badly needed food and medicine to enter the country as the bloc pushes for a peaceful transition of power in the South American nation. The call came Monday from the Lima Group, which is made up of nearly a dozen conservative Latin American nations and Canada. It has led the push to recognize opposition lawmaker Juan Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader and seeks ways to remove President Nicolas Maduro. The coalition met Monday in Ottawa and issued a declaration saying Venezuela's soldiers must show loyalty to Guaido. The group also said the United Nations and the international community should be ready to step in with humanitarian assistance for Venezuela. The US and other countries have already pledged humanitarian aid for Guaido's administration, though it remains to be seen where and how it can enter the country without the military's support. Further, the bloc dismissed the idea of opening negotiations with Maduro, who has used past talks as a stalling tactic. International clamor for snap elections in Venezuela intensified on Monday as European powers recognised Mr Guaido as interim leader, after Mr Maduro rejected an ultimatum to call early voting. Britain, France and Spain were among 19 EU nations to side with Mr Guaido, following in the footsteps of key regional powers and the United States, which has refused to rule out a military intervention in the crisis-wracked country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday accused the European Union of seeking to overthrow Mr Maduro in defiance of "democracy." "On one side you will say 'democracy, democracy, democracy' and 'ballot box, ballot box, ballot box' and later you will dare to topple the government by violence and ruse," Mr Erdogan told his ruling party lawmakers in parliament, referring to the European Union. Mr Guaido thanked each EU country in turn on Twitter "for supporting all Venezuelans in this struggle we undertake to rescue our nation's democracy, freedom and justice." Claiming his legitimacy from the constitution, the 35-year-old National Assembly leader stunned the world when he proclaimed himself interim president on January 23, setting up a tense standoff with Mr Maduro - with both men heading rival massive street rallies in Caracas on Saturday.

Tusk's 'Place in Hell' Jibe Reflects Fear and Frustration in BrusselsA longer-than-scheduled, bad-tempered phone call between May and Tusk a week ago prompted a surge of concern in EU circles that May is unable to get any divorce deal through Parliament, according to European officials who declined to be named. Tusk was horrified that May was still asking the EU for solutions to end the impasse rather than coming up with credible ones of her own. May visits Brussels on Thursday as part of her efforts to get the EU to change the most controversial part of the divorce deal -- the Irish border backstop.

Apple Watch ‘fall detection’ feature credited with saving man’s life

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:03 PM PST

Apple Watch 'fall detection' feature credited with saving man's lifeOne of the more interesting things about the Apple Watch is how the narrative behind the wearable has seemingly done a 180. Early on, the Apple Watch was positioned as something of a fashion accessory. Remember, for instance, the outrageously expensive Apple Watch Edition? Today, in sharp contrast, Apple prefers to tout the device as a fitness tracker and health monitor. Over the last few months, we've seen quite a few stories involving the heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch being used to detect potentially life-threatening health conditions. Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say that the Apple Watch has helped save numerous lives at this point. And now comes word that the fall detection feature first introduced on the Apple Watch Series 4 has started saving lives as well. According to a report from NRK, a 67-year old from Norway named Toralv Østvang credits his Apple Watch with saving his life. The story is that Østvang experienced a serious fall in his bathroom whereupon his Apple Watch automatically contacted rescue personnel. Recall, the Apple Watch, upon detecting a fall, will send a message to local emergency services -- along with information regarding your location -- if it detects that a user has been immobile for a full minute following a fall. About a half hour after the fall, rescue workers arrived on the scene and found Østvang lying on his bathroom floor, unconscious and bloody. In the midst of the fall, Østvang also sustained three fractures to his face. The fall detection feature on the Apple Watch is obviously geared towards older folks and, as a result, is off by default unless a user happens to be 65 or older.

May Heads to Northern Ireland in Search for a Brexit AnswerThe embattled premier has until next week to secure changes to the backstop -- the insurance policy meant to keep the Irish border open in the absence of a broader trade deal -- that will satisfy anti-EU members of her Conservative Party and win her a majority in Parliament. To do so, she is trying to reopen talks with Brussels on the deal she spent 18 months negotiating before Parliament rejected it by a record margin last month.

The Northam Controversy Is a Perfect Moment to Reflect on Our History

The Northam Controversy Is a Perfect Moment to Reflect on Our HistoryThere is a strange serendipity to having the scandal over Virginia governor Ralph Northam's past racist behavior break at the start of Black History Month. It serves as a timely reminder of both America's racial sins and the progress that we've made to overcome them. From lynching to the rise and fall and rise of the Klan to legally enforced segregation, slavery was followed by more than a century and a half of second-class citizenship. And even in the decades since the worst aspects of Jim Crow were finally outlawed in the 1960s, the treatment of African Americans has remained unequal.

Latvia seeks international treaty after ill-fated missile pact

Latvia seeks international treaty after ill-fated missile pactLatvia's foreign minister called Tuesday for long-term diplomacy to reach a new international agreement on intermediate-range missiles after the collapse of a landmark treaty between Russia and the United States. The NATO ally has supported the US decision to leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, agreeing with Washington that a new Russian missile system violated the 1987 pact, but called for a new accord in its place. "I would advocate -- even if it is going to take a very long period of time, even if it may be a very, sometimes, complex and disappointing, from time to time, process -- it would be good to try to find a way forward on a multilateral arms control agreement in this area," Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics told AFP.

Highlights: Trump's big speech stresses border, healthcare, foreign policy

Highlights: Trump's big speech stresses border, healthcare, foreign policyU.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday delivered an 82-minute State of the Union address to Congress focused heavily on U.S.-Mexico border security, but providing few details on new policy initiatives. Here are some highlights of his speech: IMMIGRATION "Congress has 10 days left to pass a bill that will fund our government, protect our homeland and secure our very dangerous southern border." "My administration has sent to Congress a common-sense proposal to end the crisis on the southern border." "It includes humanitarian assistance, more law enforcement, drug detection at our ports, closing loopholes that enable child smuggling and plans for a new physical barrier, or wall, to secure the vast areas between our ports of entry.  "This is a smart, strategic, see-through steel barrier, not just a simple concrete wall.
