Posted: 09 Aug 2016 12:36 PM PDT

Neymar heads the ball during Brazil's first round group A match against Iraq in Brasilia on August 7, 2016Brazil coach Rogerio Micale rallied round under-fire captain Neymar on Tuesday after two goalless draws left the Olympic hosts perilously close to another humiliating exit on home soil. Micale's men need to beat Group A leaders Denmark in Salvador on Wednesday to guarantee their place in the quarter-finals, after being booed off in consecutive stalemates against South Africa and Iraq. Amazingly, Brazil's fate could even come down to the drawing of lots with Iraq, who play South Africa, if both final group matches end in a draw by the same scoreline.

2 years of anti-IS airstrikes have redrawn the Iraqi map

FILE - In this Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 file photo, members of a cargo aircraft crew perform a visual check of their passengers as their plane prepares to land on the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier currently deployed in the Persian Gulf, supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the military operation against Islamic State extremists in Syria and Iraq. Two years ago, just weeks after the fall of Mosul, an Islamic State group push deeper into Iraq's Kurdistan region triggered Iraq's Peshmerga forces to retreat and the U.S.-led coalition to drop the first airstrikes in the fight against the militant group. Since then coalition planes have dropped more than 9,400 bombs on Iraq. The munitions, often called in to closely support advancing forces on the ground, have dramatically changed the fight against IS, allowing Iraqi forces to slowly claw back cities, towns, supply lines and infrastructure. But the fight _ that continues to be largely waged from the air _ has also leveled entire neighborhoods, displaced millions and redrawn the Iraqi map. (AP Photo/Marko Drobnjakovic, File)MAKHMOUR, Iraq (AP) — Two years ago, the U.S.-led coalition launched the first airstrikes on the Islamic State group, ushering in a deeper phase of intervention that dramatically changed the fight against the militant group in Iraq. Brazilian fans boo foreign athletes in culture clash

Posted: 09 Aug 2016 01:22 AM PDT

By Andrew Downie and Drazen Jorgic RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Brazilians brought a soccer fan's raucous attitude to the Rio Games on Monday, wildly cheering their own athletes, booing and mocking opponents -- and creating uncomfortable moments for Olympic athletes unaccustomed to no-holds-barred partisanship. Chinese weightlifter Long Qingquan, competing against a North Korean for a gold medal in the clean and jerk, found himself in front of a vocal, largely Brazilian crowd stamping and chanting his rival's name before he attempted to lift three times his bodyweight. "Brazilians are very passionate, very vocal, very loud -- very Latin -- and this is reflected sometimes in some sports and some arenas," Mario Andrada, spokesman for the Rio organisers, told reporters when asked about the Brazilian love of booing.

The New York businessman used a speech on the economy in Detroit to try to turn the page after a week of missteps in which he came under heavy criticism, including from some in his own party, and rival Democrat Hillary Clinton surged ahead in opinion polls three months ahead of the Nov. 8 election. "I want to jump-start America," Trump said, "and it won't even be that hard." Trump stuck to prepared remarks rather than the freewheeling style that often produces controversial comments at rallies.
