Zimbabwe's Mugabe appears in public for first time since army took charge Posted: 17 Nov 2017 06:46 AM PST By MacDonald Dzirutwe HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe appeared in public on Friday for the first time since the army took charge this week, as the ruling party made plans to force him to step down after more than three decades in power. The president, who is 93, opened a graduation ceremony at Zimbabwe Open University in Harare. Mugabe led the country's liberation struggle and has dominated its politics since independence in 1980 but the army takeover signals the collapse of his authority even though he says he is still in charge. |

Chinese, N.Korean envoys discuss regional concerns: state media Posted: 18 Nov 2017 03:50 AM PST A senior Chinese envoy discussed regional concerns with officials in Pyongyang on Saturday, North Korean state media said, as the US presses China to help ease the standoff over the North's nuclear weapons. The visit by Song Tao, described by Pyongyang as a special envoy of President Xi Jinping, is the first by a senior Chinese envoy for more than a year. Relations are severely stressed over Pyongyang's nuclear sabre-rattling and Beijing's support for tough UN sanctions on its neighbour. |
Robert Mueller 'subpoenas Trump election campaign for Russia documents' Posted: 17 Nov 2017 07:33 AM PST Special counsel Robert Mueller is said to have subpoenaed President Donald Trump's election campaign for documents regarding Russia. Mr Mueller, currently leading an investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin, reportedly requested documents and emails from over a dozen top campaign officials that include several keywords related to Russia. A source told the Wall Street Journal the subpoena would not compel testimony before a grand jury. |

Iran says 'biased' French policy stoking Mideast crises Posted: 17 Nov 2017 12:16 AM PST Iran said on Friday that "biased" French policy was stoking crises in the Middle East after Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian accused it of "hegemonic" ambitions in the region. "Unfortunately it seems that France has a biased and partisan approach to the crises in the region and this approach, whether intentionally or not, is even contributing to turning potential crises into real ones," foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghassemi said. Le Drian made his comments in Iran's arch rival Saudi Arabia on Thursday during a visit aimed at resolving a crisis sparked by the shock resignation earlier this month of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, a staunch critic of Iran. |

Erdogan says Turkey must clear Syria's Afrin of YPG militia Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:09 AM PST President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey needed to clear the Afrin region of northwest Syria of Kurdish YPG militia fighters, who have been in the forefront of the battle there against Islamic State insurgents. Erdogan, speaking in Ankara to officials from the ruling AK Party, also expressed disappointment with the United States, which backs the YPG. Ankara views the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency in Turkey and is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union. |

Row over 'non-political' Bible Museum holding fundraiser in Trump hotel Posted: 17 Nov 2017 03:26 PM PST A Bible Museum opening in Washington DC has come under fire for organising a $50,000 (£37,915) per table fundraising gala at a Trump hotel amid questions over its political affiliations. The Museum of the Bible holds a preview in Washington Credit: Reuters The museum, which opened its doors to the public on Friday, has promoted itself as a non-political institution but critics have questioned its decision to host a fundraiser at a hotel owned by President Donald Trump's company. The $500 million Museum of the Bible spans an entire block of the city, making it the largest museum dedicated to the holy book in the world. Its administrators have taken pains to hire a broad group of scholars as advisers and exhibits are planned from the Vatican Museum as well as the Israel Antiquities Authority. Exhibits are readied inside the Museum of the Bible Credit: Jacquelyn Martin But controversy has surrounded the museum's main financial backers, the deeply religious and conservative Green family, who own the $4 billion arts and craft chain Hobby Lobby. The 430,000-square-foot museum includes pieces from the family's collection from the Dead Sea Scrolls, towering bronze gates inscribed with text from the Gutenberg Bible and a soundscape of the 10 plagues, enhanced by smog and a glowing red light to symbolize the Nile turned to blood. However, attention has focused on the Greens' record of putting their fortune and influence behind spreading their particular religious beliefs. The institution's management has made extensive efforts to emphasise its inclusive, non-political nature but critics have highlighted its proximity to the heart of the nation's political epicenter - situated just three blocks from the US Capitol. With a digital arcade ceiling above, a visitor walks down the entrance hall of the Museum of the Bible during a preview day in Washington Credit: Reuters Some of the museum's staff have criticised the decision to host a fundraising event at the Trump International Hotel, telling the Washington Post it gave the impression they were "aligning with politics". Tickets for the black tie fundraiser on Thursday night ranged from $2,500 (£1,895) for a seat to $50,000 for a table. Donors who contributed sums of $50,000, $100,000 or $250,000 were offered perks such as tickets to a Broadway musical and a VIP reception event. The museum's vice president, Steven Bickley, has insisted the hotel was "the only place available for our date", adding "we were looking for a venue, not a statement". Critics have also seized on a changing mission statement of the museum from "[inspiring] confidence in the absolute authority and reliability of the Bible", to a new, more neutral goal of inviting people to learn more about the Bible. Steve Green, the owner of Hobby Lobby and a founder and major backer of the Museum of the Bible Credit: Jacquelyn Martin Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby, said the institution he largely funded is meant to educate, not evangelise, though critics are dubious. The museum will be the centerpiece of several of the Green family's religious efforts, including sponsoring research on the Bible and promoting a Bible curriculum they hope will be used in U.S. public schools. An initial attempt in an Oklahoma school district was withdrawn following complaints the lessons were not neutral. The Green family association has cast something of a cloud over the museum after the US department of justice accused the family's company of smuggling ancient artefacts taken from Iraq. Hobby Lobby agreed to pay a $3 million fine and return more than 5,000 items in a government settlement. The Museum of the Bible issued a statement following the settlement stating that none of the artifacts involved were part of the Museum's collection. "The Museum adheres to the current Association of Art Museum Directors standards on the Acquisition of Archaeological Material and Ancient Art, as well as guidelines set forth by the American Alliance of Museums," it said. |

US to sell Patriot missile system to Poland Posted: 17 Nov 2017 02:37 PM PST The US State Department said Friday it had approved the sale of a Patriot anti-missile system to NATO ally Poland, a move likely to irk Russia. The State Department said it had notified Congress on November 14 of its approval of the deal, which is worth up to $10.5 billion, and would mark the first time Poland has bought the sophisticated system. "A secure Europe capable of deterring air and missile threats and other forms of aggression promotes peace and stability within NATO and on the European continent," officials said in a statement. |
Vatican says investigating alleged abuser who became priest Posted: 18 Nov 2017 07:56 AM PST The Vatican said on Saturday it had opened an investigation into reports that a former teenage altar boy, who allegedly repeatedly forced a dormitory mate to have sex with him, went on to become a priest. The allegations concerning the St. Pius X Institute, known as a pre-seminary, were made in a recent book and in Italian television reports. The pre-seminary is a residence inside the Vatican for altar boys who serve at masses in St. Peter's Basilica mostly presided over by priests, bishops and cardinals. |

Pakistan issues 'last warning' to Islamists blocking route into capital Posted: 17 Nov 2017 08:28 AM PST By Asif Shahzad ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistani authorities issued a final warning on Friday to members of an Islamist party blocking a main road into the capital, raising fears of a violent clash. Hundreds of supporters of the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan party have been blocking the route into Islamabad for nearly 10 days, demanding the minister of law be sacked for what they say is blasphemy. "After this final announcement, you all are being warned to end the illegal sit-in immediately." Tehreek-e-Labaik blames the minister, Zahid Hamid, for changes to an electoral oath that it says amount to blasphemy. |
Hero police officer saved 'many lives' by bear hugging suicide bomber Posted: 18 Nov 2017 06:49 AM PST A 'hero' Afghan police officer saved "many lives" by putting a suicide bomber in a bear hug, authorities say. Sayed Basam Pacha died when he confronted the man wearing an explosive vest in the Afghan capital of Kabul on 16 November. His brave actions prevented the bomber from getting closer to a security checkpoint outside a hotel where a political meeting of supporters of an influential regional leader had just finished. The bomber killed 14 people, including seven more police officers, and injured 18, when he detonated his device, however the death toll would have undoubtedly been higher without the officer's decisive intervention. "He's a hero, he saved many lives," Kabul police chief Basir Mujahid told the New York Times. "All seven of those policemen are heroes but especially him. "Just think if that suicide attacker got past the gate, what would have happened - well you cannot even imagine." His father, Gen Sayed Nizam Agha, said his son "sacrificed himself to save other people". The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, with the Taliban denying any involvement. Harun Mutaref, who was at the gathering, told AFP, said he saw "many bodies including police and civilians lying in blood". "After lunch as we were exiting the hall a huge explosion shook the hall, shattering glass and causing chaos and panic," he said. In October, a suicide bomber thought to be as young as 12 killed five in Kabul's diplomatic zone, with the Islamic State again claiming responsibility. |
