Parliament will wrest control of Brexit if PM fails to build consensus: UK lawmakerPrime Minister Theresa May must find a way to build consensus in parliament over Britain's departure from the European Union, and if she fails to, parliament will try to take control of Brexit, a Labour Party lawmaker said on Monday. Yvette Cooper, an opposition party lawmaker who has led efforts to hand parliament more control over Brexit, said in a speech at the Centre for European Reform: "There are practical steps the prime minister can take now, not easy ones, but sensible ones - step by step to build more consensus around a way through this." "Now if she won't find a way through, then parliament has a responsibility to do so instead.

Apple confirms March 25th ‘It’s show time’ event with media invites

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 12:40 PM PDT

Apple confirms March 25th 'It's show time' event with media invitesNews that Apple would host a March event to discuss its latest services broke last month via a BuzzFeed report, but on Monday, Apple confirmed the date and location of the event by sending out invites to the press. As expected, the event will take place on March 25th at 10 a.m. from the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino. Apple, unsurprisingly, only hinted at the contents of the event with the following phrase: "It's show time."The initial report claimed that Apple's paid news subscription service would take center stage, but the invites the press received on Monday, in addition to featuring the words "show time," also includes a short animation that mirrors an old film reel countdown, suggesting that the video service will be highlighted. With Disney expected to launch its own subscription service by year's end, Netflix continuing to take over the world, and all the networks considering taking back their content to launch services of their own, the window of opportunity to capture a significant audience seems to be closing at a rapid rate. If Apple is going to make a big move and try to carve out its own share of the market, it needs to do so before the market is completely splintered. Therefore, it's no surprise that the March event is looking increasingly likely to be a launch party for Apple's streaming service. Here's what the invite for the event looks like, courtesy of TechCrunch's Matthew Panzarino:In addition to the video streaming service, the news subscription service will probably be along for the ride as well. We still don't know much about what it will look like, but as Apple's services division continues to grow so much year after year, bringing in more subscribers, in whatever form possible, has become a priority.

Trump’s 2020 Budget Asks Congress for $8.6 Billion for Border Wall

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 01:40 PM PDT

Trump's 2020 Budget Asks Congress for $8.6 Billion for Border WallPresident Trump released his $4.7 trillion 2020 budget proposal to Congress Monday, requesting $8.6 billion for border security. The plan includes funding for 722 miles of wall at the southern border, an issue that caused a record 35-day partial government shutdown beginning just before Christmas. In that fight, Trump requested $5.7 billion to build the wall, while Democrats refused to approve more than $1.6 billion for non-wall border security. Trump eventually relented, signing a bill with only $1.4 billion for barriers at the border and declaring a national emergency to appropriate billions more for wall construction. The new proposal would boost defense spending to $750 billion, $34 billion more than was allotted in the 2019 budget, and cut spending on non-defense programs  to $567 billion, down $30 billion from the 2019 budget. It would also set aside $200 billion for new infrastructure projects nationwide. The budget is seen as an important early sign of the Trump's priorities as he heads into his 2020 reelection campaign, but it is expected to fall flat in the Democrat-controlled House, and to face fierce opposition from Democrats in both chambers of Congress. In a joint statement, House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer panned the president's plan as a non-starter. "President Trump hurt millions of Americans and caused widespread chaos when he recklessly shut down the government to try to get his expensive and ineffective wall, which he promised would be paid for by Mexico," they wrote. "Congress refused to fund his wall and he was forced to admit defeat and reopen the government. The same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again. We hope he learned his lesson."

With shrouded faces, Islamic State fighters stand guard over final enclaveThousands of people - many of them the wives of Islamic State fighters and their children - have been streaming out of the besieged enclave at Baghouz for weeks, forcing the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to delay an assault on the last vestige of the jihadists' territorial rule. Reuters TV footage of the Islamic State-controlled frontline shows armed militants, most with only their eyes visible, supervising the evacuations from a scrubby patch of agricultural land scattered with vehicles and a few buildings. The SDF has said the fighters staying put through waves of evacuations are the most hardened foreign militants, wanted by governments around the world, who are likely to fight to the death.

Sajid Javid insists death of Shamima Begum's baby is her sole responsibility

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 07:03 AM PDT

Sajid Javid insists death of Shamima Begum's baby is her sole responsibilityShamima Begum bears sole responsibility for the death of her newborn son, the Home Secretary has said. Sajid Javid rejected arguments from both Conservative and Labour MPs that Britain could have helped save the jihadi bride's child, who was a British citizen. Taking questions on the case in the Commons, he warned those who expressed doubts about the threat posed by Miss Begum: "No one should make a judgment on the threat of foreign terrorist fighter poses based on their gender." He insisted there was no way officials could have provided any assistance to the baby because of the lack of consular presence in Syria, despite several MPs noting that many journalists, medics and aid agencies managed to travel "backwards and forwards to these camps all the time".   Miss Begum, 19, who fled the family home in Bethnal Green, east London, to join Islamic State in Syria four years ago, is currently living at the Roj refugee camp on the Iraqi border. Her son, Jarrah, who was not yet three weeks old, was buried at the camp last week after he contracted a lung infection. Sajid Javid revoked Shamima Begum's British citizenship Credit: Kirsty O'Connor/PA He was her third child to die within five months, the older two, aged 18 months and nine months,  dying of malnutrition and illness, respectively, in November and January. Her family has urged the Home Office to urgently reconsider its decision to revoke her citizenship as an "act of mercy". The formal request, sent yesterday (MON), warned that Miss Begum was "extremely unlikely" to be in a fit state to make rational decisions and expressed renewed concern for her health and safety. But Mr Javid made it clear he was sticking by his decision, despite many questions concerning Britain's responsibility to its citizens and the repercussions of leaving them to languish in refugee camps. Diane Abbott, the shadow home secretary, asked why he deemed the teenage mother more dangerous to Britain than the hundreds of foreign fighters who have already been allowed to return. The letter sent to the Home Office "Nobody on this side of the House condones what Shamima Begum did, the choices she made, the things she said," she said. "If it was his 19-year-old daughter, however badly she had behaved, however reprehensible or near-criminal her choices would he want her to bury three babies in the course of a year?" Mr Javid replied: "The death of any British child, even those children born to a foreign terrorist fighter, of course is a tragedy. But the only person responsible for the death of that child is the foreign terrorist fighter." He suggested he would review and "modernise" treason laws that determine maximum sentences for convicted terrorist fighters.

Guaidó: Maduro Regime ‘Murdered’ Blackout Victims

Guaidó: Maduro Regime 'Murdered' Blackout VictimsVenezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó said Sunday that the 17 people who reportedly died as a result of the country's electricity blackout were "murdered" by President Nicolás Maduro's regime."I can't call it anything else, due to lack of electricity," Guaidó told CNN. "Imagine if in your country, you wake to the news that there's been four days without electricity because they steal from electricity plants and 17 people died. That's murder."About 70 percent of Venezuela was plunged into darkness on Thursday and it remains unclear when much of the country, including the capital, Caracas, will get its electricity back. The blackout has resulted in looting and violent crime, and has left hospitals struggling to keep patients alive. The crisis comes as the impoverished country remains in turmoil and the opposition clashes with the Maduro regime's forces.Guaidó alleged to CNN that 16 states had zero power and six had partial power as of Sunday, and said the private sector has lost $400 million because of the blackout."You can say with all responsibility that Venezuela has already collapsed," he said. "There is no service in the hospitals. These were the best hospitals in the country. If we are in the capital, what is it like kilometers inside Venezuela, where there hasn't been or there has been very little gasoline with periodic cuts in electricity, without basic goods, with inefficient public transportation?"Maduro has blamed the U.S. for the massive power outage, accusing America of launching a cyber attack on the country's power grid. The U.S. has brushed off this claim, saying the regime's "incompetence" is to blame for the disaster. The U.S. and dozens of other countries recognize Guaidó as Venezuela's rightful leader.

Alibaba strikes $700m deal to gain stronghold in China's delivery sector

Alibaba strikes $700m deal to gain stronghold in China's delivery sectorAlibaba's plans to dominate China's delivery sector received a boost after the e-commerce giant struck a $693m (£530m) deal with courier company STO Express. The investment will see Alibaba take a 14pc stake in STO, which it has called "one of the top five express delivery companies in China". Alibaba has backed a string of domestic businesses specialising in logistics and delivery, including YTO Express Group, Best Inc and ZTO Express, which it led a $1.4bn investment in back in 2018. The company's drive to expand its courier operations comes as Alibaba attempts to boost the spending of Chinese consumers shopping online and create jobs in an industry increasingly being prioritised by Beijing. Last year, during Alibaba's shopping extravaganza Singles' Day, the company's delivery platform Cainiao tallied over 1bn delivery orders and generated more than $30bn within 24 hours as Chinese consumers took to the event. In 2018, more than 50bn parcels were delivered across the country. Technology intelligence - newsletter promo - EOA Alibaba predicts daily delivery volumes will increase as China expects to see a surge in the number of people occupying its middle class. The company is also attempting to bring more brick and mortar stores online in rural China through its "New Retail" strategy, helping them to become digital. "We will deepen our existing collaboration with STO in technology, last-mile delivery across China and New Retail logistics," the company said. "This investment is a step forward in our pursuit of the goal of 24-hour-delivery anywhere in China and 72 hours globally." It comes as Xi Jinping's regime has highlighted the logistics sector as a key area of growth for the country amid an economic slowdown in China. Logistics currently makes up around 15pc of the country's GDP. In the three months to December 2018, Alibaba saw its monthly active users on retail marketplaces – such as Tmall and Taobao – reach 699m, rising by 33m from September.

If you’re getting a Galaxy S10+, you need this free app

Posted: 11 Mar 2019 05:17 AM PDT

If you're getting a Galaxy S10+, you need this free appSamsung's new Galaxy S10 handsets are probably the most exciting new phones I've reviewed in years. Following the company's horribly boring Galaxy S9 series that recycled the S8's design and added no compelling new features at all, Samsung kicked off 2019 on the right foot. The Galaxy S10 features a novel new design, plenty of power, and a number of nifty new features you won't find on any rival phones outside of China right now. It's a breath of fresh air in a smartphone market that was definitely starting to get a bit stagnant. The Galaxy S10+ may end up being the most popular new model despite its hefty price tag, especially among avid gadget fans. It's packed full of all the same new features as the Galaxy S10, but it also sports a large 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen while the smaller Galaxy S10 features a 6.1-inch display. Whether you plan to pick up an S10+ or you've already bought one, there's a free app that you're definitely going to want to download because it dramatically improves the user experience. And best of all, it's free. The app is called One Hand Operation +, and it's made by none other than Samsung. As the name of the app might suggest, it makes it much easier to use the Galaxy S10+ -- or any large Samsung phone, for that matter -- with one hand.Android Pie introduced optional new navigation gestures similar to what Apple did on the iPhone X from 2017, and we recommend that everyone uses them. Why? Mainly because enabling gestures means ditching the Android navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen, which frees up additional real estate for more important things. Some gestures are difficult to perform with one hand on a large phone, however, so One Hand Operation + addresses that by letting you configure custom swipes that can be performed anywhere you want. You'll find the full description from the Play Store page below, followed by a link where you can download it for free. Whether you're getting a brand new Galaxy S10+ or you already have a Samsung phone and you'd like it to be easier to use with one hand, this is the app for you. One important note, though: it only works on Samsung phones. If you'd like something that offers similar functionality on handsets from other brands, check out Edge Gestures.> With this app, you can use your device easily with only thumb.> > When the function is set, thin gesture handles are added to the left / right side of the screen. > By swiping this handle, defined functions will be executed. the default function is the Back button which most frequently used.> > You can set various functions on horizontal / diagonal up / diagonal down direction gestures. As you become accustomed to using short gestures, you can set up more functions on long gestures.> > Currently available functions are as follows, and we plan to provide additional function upgrades.> > \- Back key > \- Home key > \- Recent key > \- Menu key > \- Previous app > \- Forward ( web browser ) > \- Open notification panel > \- Open quick panel > \- Screen off > \- Assistance app > \- Screenshot > \- Floating navigation buttons > \- Pull screen down > \- One-handed mode > \- Task switcher> > Depending on the size of hand, the thickness of thumb, or the shape of the bumper case being used, various handle settings are provided to optimize gesture recognition.> > The handle will receive user's touch above the running app. So, as long as the gesture recognition is possible, it is recommended to set handle to be thin.> > And once you are fully familiar with the use of gestures, It is recommended that set max transparency.> > In addition, when the touch interference is severe with running application such as game, you can set [App exceptions] in [Advanced Settings], then the gesture handles will not work when the app is running.> > Experience the convenience of gestures on your phone and tablet with One Hand Operation +.> > Thank you.Download One Hand Operation +
