Three Gulf countries ban Boeing's 737 MAX after crash Posted: 12 Mar 2019 01:33 PM PDT The United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Oman on Tuesday banned Boeing's 737 MAX jet from their airspace following a second deadly crash involving the model within five months. The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority said the move was a "precautionary measure aimed at protecting public safety," state news agency WAM reported. Budget airline flydubai said it had grounded 13 of its aircraft and would operate flights using alternative Boeing jets in its fleet. |
Venezuela: prominent journalist taken by intelligence service Posted: 12 Mar 2019 07:12 AM PDT Luis Carlos Díaz, who went missing at about 5.30pm Monday, was taken by Sebin, fellow journalists confirmed Venezuela's National Press Workers Union said agents raided Luis Carlos Díaz's home shortly before dawn, seizing computers as the handcuffed journalist looked on. Photograph: Ronaldo Schemidt/AFP/Getty Images A prominent Venezuelan journalist who had been reporting on the country's escalating political crisis and electricity blackout out has been seized by secret police, sparking international condemnation. Luis Carlos Díaz went missing at about 5.30pm on Monday after leaving the radio station where he worked in the capital, Caracas. A social media hunt ensued with Twitter users demanding #DóndeEstáLuisCarlos or #WhereIsLuisCarlos. Early on Tuesday, fellow journalists confirmed Díaz had been taken by members of Venezuela's feared intelligence service, Sebin. Venezuela's National Press Workers Union said agents raided Díaz's home shortly before dawn, seizing computers and pen drives as the handcuffed journalist looked on. Díaz is reportedly now being held in the notorious El Helicoide political prison. Luz Mely Reyes, an internationally acclaimed Venezuelan journalist, told the Guardian her colleague's detention was part of an escalating war on the press being waged by the country's embattled leader, Nicolás Maduro. Maduro is fighting for his political life after an audacious challenge from a young opposition leader called Juan Guaidó, who most western governments now recognize as Venezuela's rightful interim president. "I think one of the things [Maduro] is trying to achieve is to intimidate [journalists] and ensure the stories about what is going on in Venezuela are not told," Reyes said. "Repression against the press has been growing." Last week, one day before much of Venezuela was paralyzed by a massive power cut, an American freelance journalist who had worked for the Daily Telegraph was deported after being seized at his home in Caracas. A rightwing German journalist, Billy Six, has reportedly been held in El Helicoide since being detained on suspicion of espionage last year. "It is just a joke," his father, Edward Six, told the Guardian in a recent interview. "Journalism is not a crime." Díaz's detention – which authorities have yet to explain – triggered condemnation in and outside of Venezuela, with Guaidó denouncing Maduro's "persecution" of journalists. The UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet tweeted that she was "deeply worried" by the detention of Díaz, adding that UN officials in Caracas had urgently requested access to him. During a brief conversation in the early hours of Tuesday, Díaz reportedly told Naky Soto, his journalist wife, he had been detained near the Korean embassy in Caracas while riding his bicycle home. Agents said he was suspected of "IT offenses". Last Friday, Maduro's second-in-command, Diosdado Cabello, published a conspiratorial video on Twitter insinuating Díaz was part of a "rancid" rightwing US-backed plot to destroy Venezuela's electricity network. Reyes said she feared Díaz's detention would not be the last, as the political situation in Venezuela deteriorated. "This is not a game – this is a very serious situation that puts us on alert." |
Talk to Pakistan, former Modi ally urges India amid Kashmir tension Posted: 11 Mar 2019 11:06 AM PDT Mehbooba Mufti, who was chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir from early 2014 to June last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party withdrew support for her regional party, said an ongoing crackdown on militants and those supporting secession could further alienate the people. India has vowed to kill all the militants in the country's only Muslim-majority state if they do not give up arms, after a 20-year-old local man killed 40 paramilitary troopers in a suicide attack last month. Indian security forces have killed 18 militants in Kashmir since then, the army said on Monday. |

US tech giant Nvidia in biggest ever deal with $6.9bn takeover of Israel's Mellanox Posted: 11 Mar 2019 09:32 AM PDT The US computer giant Nvidia has made its biggest-ever acquisition with a $6.9bn (£5.3bn) takeover of Israel's Mellanox. The deal represents a strategic shift towards cloud computing for Nvidia after a share crash at the end of last year triggered by the end of the cryptocurrency boom and slow sales of its computer game graphics chips. Nvidia is best known for graphical processors, which are used in video and game production but have also become surprisingly proficient at intensive computing tasks such as cryptocurrency mining and artificial intelligence. Its shares rose ten-fold between 2016 and last September amid booming interest in AI and the Bitcoin bubble, but lost half their value at the end of last year as cryptocurrency mining became unprofitable and sales of the graphics cards it sells to video gamers slowed, particularly in China. Mellanox's networking technology is used within data centres, the remote stacks of powerful computers used by companies to store and process vast amounts of information. Its technology transfers data at high speeds within and between the data centres, which are increasingly in demand due to the rise of cloud computing services in which companies rent server space from Amazon, Microsoft and others. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, said: "The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world's data centers." The two companies have previously worked together on the world's two most powerful supercomputers, the IBM-built systems used by the US government. Nvidia reportedly beat away competition from Intel for the acquisition. Intel has also been leaning more heavily on its data centre business as the market for personal computers shrinks. It is by far the company's biggest acquisition to date, worth almost 20 times the $367m it paid for modem company Icera in 2011. Shares in Nvidia rose by more than 5pc on news of the deal. |

Planes grounded after deadly Ethiopia crash Posted: 11 Mar 2019 11:23 AM PDT Safety doubts over Boeing's best-selling 737 MAX 8 drove several carriers to ground the aircraft Monday after a new jet crashed in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board. Investigators recovered the black-box flight recorders from the Nairobi-bound jet that went down early Sunday near Addis Ababa, the carrier Ethiopia Airlines said. Ethiopia decreed Monday a day of national mourning. |

Venezuela blackout has killed 21 people, opposition leaders say Posted: 11 Mar 2019 08:53 AM PDT Six of the dead are babies and numbers will rise, opposition sayOpposition to hold emergency debate as power cut continues An injured man is carried by paramedics inside Miguel Perez Carreno hospital in Caracas during the worst power outage in Venezuela's history. Photograph: Matias Delacroix/AFP/Getty Images At least 21 people – six of them babies – have so far died as a result of Venezuela's shattering nationwide blackout, opposition leaders have claimed as they prepared to hold an emergency debate on the crisis in the capital, Caracas. "These are not just numbers, these are Venezuelan lives that would not have been lost were it not for the ineptitude of Nicolás Maduro," tweeted José Manuel Olivares, a doctor and opposition politician who is monitoring its impact on Venezuela's already debilitated healthcare system. According to Olivares's count, 15 patients died in the Manuel Núñez Tovar hospital in the north-eastern city of Maturín after the lights went out there following Thursday's outage, which has yet to be resolved. Two newborn babies died in the Hospital de los Magallanes de Catia in Caracas, one of which was suffering from severe malnutrition. Olivares told the Guardian the number of deaths would rise as the true extent of the calamity became clearer. The power cut meant it had still not been possible to communicate with many hospitals. On Monday morning, the opposition leader Juan Guaidó – who most western governments now recognize as Venezuela's legitimate interim leader – hit out at Maduro, who retains the support of China and Russia. "Our people are still living with the threat of new blackouts while these cynics lie and laugh at pain and death," Guaidó tweeted. Venezuela's defence minister, Vladimir Padrino López, said the government was "working tirelessly" to resolve the crisis, which it has blamed on a US-backed conspiracy designed to topple Maduro and bring Guaidó to power. There were reports that electricity had returned to some parts of Caracas while the Chavista governor of the neighbouring state of Miranda claimed electricity had returned to 80% of his territory. Maduro, who has made just one public appearance since the crisis began, claimed progress was being made towards "reconnection". "With intense work, love and resistance we will prevail," he tweeted on Monday. However, experts fear the crisis – which many attribute to poor maintenance and corruption – is far from being resolved. Schools and workplaces were again ordered shut on Monday. "In my house we haven't had any light since Thursday. There is no water, no [phone] signal, no light, no nothing," said Anna Ferrera, a student activist from eastern Caracas. Ferrera said that in the early hours of Monday an electrical substation had exploded not far from her home. "None of us have ever lived through something like this – not my generation, not my parents, not my grandmother. They say this is like living in a war." |
Foxconn rejects Microsoft patent lawsuit, says never had to pay royalties Posted: 12 Mar 2019 06:15 AM PDT Taiwan's Foxconn on Tuesday responded to a patent infringement lawsuit filed against it by Microsoft Corp, saying as a contract manufacturer, it has never needed to pay royalties for the U.S. company's software. Microsoft filed the complaint against Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile Ltd in the Northern District of California on Friday. Foxconn founder and Chief Executive Terry Gou told an impromptu news conference in Taipei that "patent infringement" is not an issue for his company, which "will suffer almost no any loss" as a result of the lawsuit. |

Venezuela plunged into darkness for fourth consecutive day as country teeters on brink Posted: 11 Mar 2019 01:57 AM PDT Sunday was the fourth day since Venezuela's power system went down, plunging most of the country, including Caracas, the capital, into sporadic darkness and dampening hopes of imminent resolution to a devastating blackout that has brought the country to the verge of social implosion. "We're going to arrive at a moment when we're going to eat each other," said Zuly González, 40, a resident of Caracas' Chacao neighbourhood. Venezuela has been devastated for years by hyperinflation and a failing economy that has led millions to flee. |

Chinese database openly listing personal details of 1.8m women Posted: 11 Mar 2019 08:02 AM PDT A security researcher claims to have uncovered a database in China that is publicly listing the personal information of more than 1.8m women, making available sensitive data such as their phone numbers, home addresses and "BreedReady" status. According to Victor Gevers, a Dutch researcher at non-profit organisation GDI.Foundation, the cache holding personal details of the Chinese citizens is "unprotected". In screenshots posted to Twitter by Mr Gevers, the open database is seen to contain extensive categories of data about the women, including their age, identity card digits, birthday, marital status and "BreedyReady" status, which is thought to refer to whether or not a woman has a child or has the potential to "breed". Mr Gevers found the youngest girl on the database to be aged 15 years old, with the average age of people listed on the database 32. Around 82pc of the women appear to be located in Beijing. "In China, they have a shortage of women. So an organisation started to build a database to start registering over 1.8 million women with all kinds of details like phone numbers, addresses, education, location, ID number, marital status and a "BreedReady" status?" he said on Twitter. Technology intelligence - newsletter promo - EOA China has more than 29,000 open databases, according to specialist search engine ZoomEye, and the personal data being so readily-available raises concerns about the security of open databases in the country. It is unclear what the purpose of the database would be, but evidence suggests that Chinese authorities are growing increasingly concerned about a drop in birth rates in the country. Some firms in the country have started giving women a "dating leave" to encourage marriage. The database, which was first found by Mr Gevers at the weekend, has been unreachable for a number of hours on Monday. "We will keep an eye on that IP address for a while to make sure it doesn't come back online. We still do not know [who] the owner was or what the database was actually designed for," he said. "When we do we will share this." |

Android apps are now available on Windows 10 for Windows Insiders Posted: 12 Mar 2019 03:04 PM PDT Microsoft might lack a mobile OS of its own, but that doesn't mean the company is ignoring smartphones and tablets. The software maker is behind several popular mobile apps for iPhone and Android, and even sells select Android handsets in its stores. In the future, Windows 10 users will also be able to enjoy Android apps on their laptops and desktops, as Microsoft has started testing the Your Phone feature it first teased a few months ago.According to The Verge, Microsoft's update for the Your Phone Windows 10 app includes support for mirroring Android phones on a PC. The feature will be available to Windows Insiders this week, assuming your devices qualify for it. You'll need to run the latest Windows 10 beta version on your laptop or desktop, and you'll of course have to install the Your Phone app. You'll need a computer that can support Bluetooth Low Energy, which will be mandatory for future PC models. Without it, you won't be able to connect your Android device to the Windows 10 machine. Finally, you'll need a compatible Android device to start testing the feature, and the list only includes select Samsung flagship phones: Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, S9, and S9 Plus. The Galaxy S10 series can't be used for the time being, although Microsoft plans on expanding the list of supported devices in the future.Once everything's enabled and hooked up, you'll be able to mirror your Android device on the Windows 10 PC and use apps from the phone directly on the PC. It's unclear when the Your Phone app will get the Android mirroring feature on a stable Windows 10 release, so the only way of taking advantage of it right now is to register for the Insider beta program. |
