U.S. builds two air bases in Kurdish-controlled north Syria: Kurdish report Posted: 06 Mar 2016 02:04 PM PST The United States has nearly finished setting up an air base in Kurdish-controlled northern Syria and was proceeding with the construction of a second base for dual military and civilian use, a Kurdish website said on Sunday. A spokesman for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said, however, the United States was not taking control of any airfields in Syria. The Erbil-based news website BasNews, quoting a military source in the Kurdish-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), said most of the work on a runway in the oil town of Rmeilan in Hasaka was complete while a new air base southeast of Kobani, straddling the Turkish border, was being constructed. |

Iraq PM Abadi secures Shi'ite support for cabinet change plan: state TV Posted: 06 Mar 2016 11:57 AM PST Iraq's main Shi'ite groups on Sunday voiced support for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's plan to overhaul the government and combat corruption, state TV said. The broadcaster cited a statement issued by the National Alliance, a loose gathering of Shi'ite groups that controls the majority of seats in parliament, after a meeting with Abadi in the Shiite holy city of Kerbala, south of Baghdad. Abadi, 19 months into his four-year term, said in February that he wanted to replace politically-appointed ministers with technocrats in a bid to weaken the current system which distributes positions along ethnic and sectarian lines, creating patronage networks blamed for breeding corruption. |

The Turkish Coast Guard, using speedboats and a helicopter, rescued 15 people and recovered 18 bodies in the Aegean Sea near the town of Didim, Anadolu said. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will be in Brussels for Monday's emergency summit with European Union leaders seeking to reduce illegal migration to member states, much of which occurs through Turkey. |

The power of Trump’s call to free America from political correctness Posted: 06 Mar 2016 09:48 AM PST Ron Herndon needs more than 10 fingers to count the ways Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump rubs him the wrong way, not least the billionaire's quest for personal aggrandizement via the White House. "America is at the point where she needs someone who speaks the truth, to say what we all think but won't say around strangers," says Mr. Herndon. Recommended: What do you know about Donald Trump? |

Little to show in Boko Haram-IS partnership: analysts Posted: 06 Mar 2016 12:06 AM PST When Boko Haram pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria last year, there were fears the deadly insurgency in northeast Nigeria would take on an international dimension. If anything, Boko Haram appears a considerably weaker force and apparently in disarray after a year-long military counter-offensive. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has only been heard from twice since his audio message published on March 7, 2015 pledging an oath to his IS counterpart Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. |
