Obama presents Afghan war vet with Medal of Honor Posted: 15 Oct 2013 03:12 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — Four years after risking his life in Afghanistan, William D. Swenson solemnly received the Medal of Honor on Tuesday in a case of battlefield bravery with some odd twists: The young Army captain questioned the judgment of his superiors, and the paperwork nominating him for the award was lost. He left the military two years ago but wants to return to active duty, a rare move for a medal recipient. |
Medal of Honor winner: jobless and struggling with horrors of war Posted: 15 Oct 2013 02:42 PM PDT Capt. William Swenson on Tuesday became the first Army officer since the Vietnam War to be awarded the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony attended by his fellow troops and the families of the soldiers who were killed as they fought alongside him. |

Syrian fighters battle on, ignoring Muslim holiday Posted: 15 Oct 2013 01:55 PM PDT By Dominic Evans BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian air force jets and helicopters bombed rebel-held districts across the country on Tuesday, the first day of the Muslim festival of Eid al Adha, and rebel fighters fired rockets into the heart of Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad, whose forces are battling a civil war which grew out of protests against his rule two years ago, was shown on state television attending morning prayers with ministers at a Damascus mosque at the start of the Eid holiday. ... |

Soccer-Singapore shock Syria, Iran edge Thailand in Asian Cup Posted: 15 Oct 2013 11:16 AM PDT By Patrick Johnston SINGAPORE, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Singapore produced a huge surprise by upsetting Syria 2-1 for their first victory in 2015 Asian Cup qualifying on Wednesday while Malaysia and Indonesia grabbed unlikely draws on a good night for Southeast Asia. World Cup qualifiers Iran overcame a stubborn defensive effort by Thailand to claim a 2-1 win in Tehran but Jordan, hoping to join them in Brazil next year, played out a drab goalless draw at home to Oman. ... |
How WikiLeaks Beat the Mainstream Media Posted: 15 Oct 2013 11:06 AM PDT In the final scene of Sydney Pollack's 1976 thriller, Three Days of the Condor, the whistleblower-hero played by Robert Redford crows to his nemesis, a high-up CIA rogue plotting to take over Middle Eastern oil fields, that he's revealed the plot to the New York Times. The CIA man (played by Cliff Robertson) retorts, "How do you know they'll print it?" The movie ends ambiguously with the suggestion that Redford's character better not celebrate yet because the CIA just might be able to stop the presses. |
On Iran, Obama's bigger challenge is with his allies Posted: 15 Oct 2013 10:47 AM PDT By Mark Leonard The things that probably keep Barack Obama up at night — terrorist networks, covert nuclear programs and chemical weapons — can often be countered with off-the-peg reasoning: drones, sanctions, inspections, or even the threat of intervention. Much more difficult is working out how to stop allies from destroying what he hopes will be the signature achievement of his second term: a historic opening to Iran. When it comes to the Middle East, Obama's thorniest problems come not from his enemies, but from his friends. With the possibility of bilateral meetings between the U.S. ... |

Top diplomat Kerry's personal diplomacy piles up the miles Posted: 15 Oct 2013 09:30 AM PDT By Lesley Wroughton LONDON (Reuters) - If it's Saturday, it must be Paris. Or Kabul. Or perhaps Bali, Kuala Lumpur or London. At the end of a grueling 13-day trip to Southeast Asia, Europe and Afghanistan, John Kerry is already building a reputation for globe-trotting to rival that of predecessor Hillary Clinton, who was one of the most-traveled U.S. secretaries of state. Clinton launched into her role as the top U.S. ... |
Foreign coaches punted as Australia fails on world stage Posted: 15 Oct 2013 07:15 AM PDT By Nick Mulvenney SYDNEY (Reuters) - Three foreign coaches have paid the price for Australian humiliation on the international sporting stage this year and the search for a new soccer coach is taking place against a backdrop of hostility to "mercenaries" from overseas. In a miserable 2013 tempered only by golfer Adam Scott's triumph at the U.S. Masters, a proud sporting nation has endured the continuing travails of their once all-conquering cricket team and the defeat of the Wallabies rugby team at the hands of the British and Irish Lions. ... |

Mosque bombing kills 8 Sunni worshippers in northern Iraq Posted: 15 Oct 2013 12:26 AM PDT KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) - A bomb exploded near a mosque in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Tuesday, killing eight Sunni worshippers after the first prayer of the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice, or Eid al-Adha, police and medical sources said. Insurgents usually intensify their attacks during religious holidays in Iraq, and security officials expect more violence over the coming days. More than 6,000 people have been killed in bloodshed so far this year as Sunni Islamist and other insurgents regain ground and momentum in an onslaught against Iraq's Shi'ite-led government. ... |

Persistence is key to agreeing on parks use for immigrants, long-time residents Posted: 14 Oct 2013 06:00 AM PDT Members of Congress are not the only people who must bridge their differing views if they want to make progress, whether on the nation's debt or immigration reform. Here in the city of El Cajon, Calif., just east of San Diego, long-time residents and newcomers are searching for literal common ground – in city parks and playing fields. |
