Baghdad piles pressure on Iraqi Kurds to reverse overwhelming independence vote Posted: 27 Sep 2017 01:00 PM PDT By Ahmed Rasheed and Raya Jalabi BAGHDAD/ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Baghdad heaped pressure on Iraq's Kurds on Wednesday, demanding they cancel their overwhelming vote for independence while parliament urged the Iraqi central government to send troops to take control of vital oil fields held by Kurdish forces. Stepping up efforts to isolate autonomous Kurdish-held northern Iraq, whose people endorsed secession in a referendum on Monday that angered neighboring countries, Baghdad demanded that foreign governments close their diplomatic missions in the Kurdish capital Erbil. Final results released on Wednesday showed nearly 93 percent in favor of independence, and 7.3 percent against. |

Wedding photographer captures moment groom jumps into pond to save drowning boy Posted: 26 Sep 2017 10:16 AM PDT A photographer captured the moment two newlyweds' photo shoot turned into a dramatic rescue. Clayton and Brittany Cook had just got married on Friday and were having their photos taken on a park bridge in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, when the groom spotted a young boy in trouble in the lake. He immediately jumped into the waist-deep water before his new wife knew what was happening. Mrs Cook told CTV: "I look over and I see Clay in the water and I think, what is he doing?" Mr Cook said: "His face was underwater and he was fighting, like he was really fighting. Luckily, he was only a little guy…and I honestly just sort of hopped him up." The couple said after being lifted to safety the boy appeared unhurt and was taken away by an older sibling. Mrs Cook praised her husband's swift actions saying: "That's Clay, like that's Clay to me. It's something he would just instinctively do. It was like fate almost, we were meant to be there." The couple's photographer, Darren Hatt, who until that point been shooting a conventional wedding scene, managed to capture the dramatic lake rescue. Almost as soon as I realized what was going on, he had already saved the day." Mr Hatt later posted photos of Mr Cook's heroics on his Facebook page saying "Well done sir!". Others were also quick to praise the groom's swift and selfless actions. |
Southern California wildfire forces 1,500 to flee homes Posted: 26 Sep 2017 06:59 PM PDT Crews were battling a major Southern California wildfire on Tuesday that has destroyed at least one structure and forced 1,500 people to flee their homes amid high temperatures and gusty winds. The so-called Canyon Fire, which broke out in the Santa Ana Mountains east of Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, charred more than 2,000 acres by Tuesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Some 900 firefighters had been called in to protect homes in and around the city of Corona, assisted by water-dropping aircraft and bulldozers, the agency said. |

Woman deathly allergic to dogs forcibly pushed off plane, and Twitter has no sympathy Posted: 27 Sep 2017 05:54 PM PDT Another plane booting video is gaining traction online months after the violent United incident. A woman was forcibly removed from a Southwest flight Tuesday, but this time around the passenger is getting very little sympathy online. SEE ALSO: Unsettling video captures United passenger being forcibly removed from overbooked flight The woman, identified as 46-year-old Anila Daulatzai from Baltimore, had complained about two dogs on her flight from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Los Angeles. She said she was deathly allergic, but when crew informed her they couldn't remove the dogs, one of which was a service dog, she was told to leave the plane. That's when things went south. After the woman couldn't show medical papers about her allergies and refused to leave the plane, law enforcement arrived to remove her, Southwest said in a statement. She's since been charged with disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order, disturbing the peace, obstructing and hindering a police officer and resisting arrest, but released by authorities, according to KTLA. A low-quality video recorded by another passenger shows the woman struggling on Flight 1525 with officers down the aisle of the plane. The video is embedded at the top of this story. At one point she tells the officers her father has a surgery scheduled and to not touch her, while one of the officers grabs her from behind and shouts. Other passengers urge her to walk off the plane on her own. When an officer grabs her, she yells, "Don't touch me!" He loudly demands "Walk!"as a response. "Geez, lady just get off the plane," another passenger says as she's pushed down the aisle. More chatter can be heard about how she said she had allergies. The comments caught on tape are similar to the response online. Many seem to think the woman brought her troubles upon herself and she could have handled the situation better. It also doesn't help that she wanted the dogs removed from the flight so that she could fly. To be fair, the officer grabbing her isn't winning points either. "If you look at the police, they were being overly aggressive," Bill Dumas, the passenger who recorded the incident, told CBS. "Really, she wasn't giving them much of a choice, and the people on the plane were saying, 'Just get off the plane,'" he said. Southwest also acknowledged the use of force in a statement and said it was unfortunate officers resorted to forcing her off the plane. "We are disheartened by the way this situation unfolded," Southwest said. I have a deadly pet allergy, but NO! I will NOT get off the plane. 樂 https://t.co/5RKmKfFYIc — Brian McIver (@bmciver) September 27, 2017 Get over it passenger, pets are allowed on flights; take a shot for your allergies or drive. https://t.co/LOpRrQNii6 — Cricket (@AbsurdWeb) September 27, 2017 If I had a true "life threatening" allergy to a pet, and saw one on the plane. You couldn't get me off the plane fast enough. Not buying it — Joe Coppola (@thor82405) September 27, 2017 Yes a win for the dogs — ENM (@rr_enm) September 27, 2017 Let's assume passenger at risk did continue her journey, she went to a life death convulsion, what would #SouthWest position be, Act of God? — Hampton Brown (@hebrwn) September 27, 2017 This Southwest video has me heated. Learn the facts before you post some shit about boycotting. The passenger was in the wrong. — B Padre (@RUTHLESSC0UTURE) September 27, 2017 Public records show Daulatzai was arrested in 2006 for an unspecified misdemeanor citizen arrest through the Los Angeles Police Department. In the video, she can be heard telling the officers, "I'm a professor, what are you doing." She's listed as a new faculty member at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She was previously a visiting assistant professor of Women's Studies and Islamic Studies at the Harvard Divinity School. The airline also apologized to Daulatzai. But Twitter isn't commiserating. Ryanair drops bid to buy Italian rival Alitalia Posted: 27 Sep 2017 07:36 AM PDT Irish no-frills airline Ryanair said Wednesday it was dropping its bid to buy Italian carrier Alitalia, as it struggles with a shortage of pilots that has forced it to cancel thousands of flights. "In order to focus on repairing this rostering problem this winter, Ryanair will eliminate all management distractions starting with its interest in Alitalia," it said in a statement. The Dublin-based carrier had announced a non-binding offer in July for Alitalia. |
The graphs that show why Bali's Mt Agung volcano could erupt at any minute, as 75,000 flee Posted: 26 Sep 2017 02:11 AM PDT Vehicles laden with food, masks and bedding have been dispatched to help more than 75,000 people who have fled a volcano on the tourist island of Bali, as rising magma and increased tremors fuel fears of an imminent eruption. Mount Agung, about 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the Indonesian tourist hub of Kuta, has been rumbling since August, threatening to erupt for the first time since 1963. "The chance that an eruption will happen is quite big. But it cannot be predicted when it will happen," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the disaster mitigation agency, said. The increased frequency of tremors shows the magma continuing to move towards the surface, with the mountain entering a "critical phase", the spokesman said. The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation said there has been an increase in volcanic tremors, with a total of 564 recorded Monday. The first chart below shows the energy created by these tremors, while the second shows the frequency of tremors, increasing dramatically since the start of September. A graph showing the energy created by tremors near Mt Agung Credit: MAGMA Indonesia A graph showing the frequency of tremors near Mt Agung Credit: MAGMA Indonesia Evacuees have packed into temporary shelters or moved in with relatives. Some 2,000 cows have also been evacuated from the flanks of the volcano. Balinese residents, international NGOs and the government have begun organising aid. Vehicles filled with noodles, mineral water and blankets have been sent to the evacuation centres, while residents around the island have been collecting donations for those affected. Bali's "sister village" programme and tradition of communal assistance means evacuees have been able to stay in villages outside the danger zone. The agency's spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said evacuees are spread across more than 370 locations on the island and their numbers are continuing to rise. I Ketut Subandi, head of logistics at the village of Tana Ampo, said basic food items like rice, instant noodles, cooking oil and water were most needed. "This morning we were worried because we had limited rice supply, but now we have received more rice stocks from donors," Subandi said. Indonesia's national disaster agency has dispatched 640,000 face masks, 12,500 mattresses, 8,400 blankets, 50 tents, and has a budget of $75,000 for assistance. The central government has set aside a relief fund of nearly $150 million in case of an eruption. A villager watches Mount Agung volcano in his field in Amed, Bali, Indonesia, Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017 Credit: AP Officials announced the highest possible alert level on Friday due to the increasing volcanic activity, and told people to stay at least nine kilometres away from the crater. "Our preparedness will be the key for the mitigations of volcanic risks," Devy Kamil, a senior official at Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, told AFP. Trekking tours on the mountain have been cancelled by operators but officials have otherwise been at pains to assure tourists the island is safe. The airport in Bali's capital Denpasar, through which millions of foreign tourists pass every year, has not been affected, but several countries including Australia and Singapore have put out a travel advisory. Mount Agung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes extending the length of Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire. It last erupted in 1963, killing nearly 1,600 people and sending ash as far as the capital Jakarta. |

Australian snake catcher leaps to capture one of world’s most venomous snakes in incredible video Posted: 27 Sep 2017 08:17 AM PDT A snake catcher recorded the moment he leapt from the edge of a pool to capture one of the most deadly snakes on the planet. Stuart McKenzie had spent three days fruitlessly trying to snare the huge eastern brown snake, which had taken up residence in a family garden in Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, Australia. The species is the second most venomous land snake on the planet, behind the more reclusive Inland Taipan, which is also found in Australia. Mr McKenzie leaping to capture the huge eastern brown snake Credit: Facebook/The Snake Catcher 24/7 - Sunshine Coast Mr McKenzie said every time he had tried to catch the serpent it had darted under a concrete slab in the garden. The snake had then resisted any attempt to dislodge it from underneath the slab, including when Mr McKenzie used a water hose and leaf blower. Bereft of other options, Mr McKenzie opted for a more unorthodox approach. Writing on his Facebook page, he said: "The final thing left to do was to jump off the edge of the pool and land next to him and grab him when he was out from underneath the slab. And let's just say it worked a treat." In the footage Mr McKenzie can be seen waiting for the snake to emerge before hopping down and quickly scooping up the reptile. The brown snake is seen writhing and comes close to Mr McKenzie's body on two occasions. However the professional catcher manages to keep the snake at arm's length before placing it into a bag. Snakes are a common feature in the Queensland region of Australia at this time of year. However residents of the state are being warned that a coming heatwave will see a surge in snakes coming into contact with humans. The snakes are currently in breeding season but the heat will make the cold-blooded reptiles more active than usual. Snake catchers in the state are already reporting large spikes in callouts and warning residents not to try and tackle the serpents by themselves. Australia guide |

Russia to retaliate against U.S. in military observation flights row: agencies Posted: 27 Sep 2017 04:05 AM PDT Russia will retaliate against the United States in a row over a treaty that allows both states to conduct military observation flights over each other's territory, Russia's deputy foreign minister said, Russian news agencies reported on Wednesday. In the latest sign of escalating tensions between the two countries, the United States has accused Russia of flouting the so-called Open Skies Treaty, an agreement designed to build confidence between the two countries' militaries, and said it plans to take measures against Moscow. |
