'Race against water' as rain threatens Thai boys in the cave Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:38 AM PDT Thirteen sets of diving equipment have been prepared for the team, who have endured 12 nights underground in the Tham Luang cave complex in northern Thailand, a saga that has transfixed a nation and united Thais in prayers for their safe return. In a sign of increased urgency, Narongsak said medics and Thai Navy SEAL divers are assessing whether the boys are fit and well enough to be taken out early -- apparently softening his instance on Wednesday that "no risk" will be taken with the evacuation. It takes seasoned cave diving experts around six hours to reach the muddy ledge where the boys are sheltering around four kilometres (2.4 miles) into the cave. |

Polar bear kills Canadian man protecting his daughters in rare attack Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:19 AM PDT A young Inuit father has died while protecting his children from a rare polar bear attack in Canada's eastern Arctic territory. Aaron Gibbons, a 31-year-old resident of the Inuit hamlet of Arviat on the southern tip of Nunavut, reportedly encountered the bear on Sentry Island, a popular hunting and fishing spot situated about 10 kilometres away from the hamlet, on the west coast of Hudson Bay. "My qangiaq [nephew] died a hero today," Gibbons' uncle, Gordy Kidlapik, said. "The bear surprised him and his children, so he put himself between them and the bear to let them escape. The bear had no fear." "To hear…his young daughter having to call on CB radio and crying to her grandmother, my aik, immediately after the mauling...we were very helpless. To hear my aik calling out to my qangiaq, asking if he's okay...very heart breaking. His body was brought in at 11:15." Gibbons, who apparently was armed with a rifle that was out of reach at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ecologists warn that polar bear attacks on humans are becoming increasingly common due to climate change driving bears onto the land. Polar bears are increasingly being driven onto the land as Arctic ice melts Credit: AFP Mr Kidlapik also hit out at tour companies who he said were lowering polar bears' fears of humans by offering access to the animals. He warned that tourism was leaving Inuit residents of communities involved "to defend against approaching bears that lost their fear of humans. " However Canadian zoologist Susan Crockford, who studies polar bear activity, said that up close and personal exposure to the animals might not be the reason for the fatal attack. "Nobody can draw any conclusions until we get more information about the age and condition of the bear," said Ms Crockford, an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia. "Very young bears between three and five years old are not only inexperienced hunters, but they also have to compete with older, bigger males who take the seals away from the younger bears and they lose out in the competition game." Nunavut's Department of Environment said it was "working closely" with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and wildlife officers in their investigation. |
Germany's Merkel, Hungary's Orban clash over how to be humane Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:35 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel clashed with her Hungarian counterpart over the responsibilities Europe had toward refugees seeking sanctuary on the continent in a tense press conference marked by unusually passionate disagreements. "I believe the soul of Europe is humanity and if we want to retain this soul and play a role in Europe with these values then Europe can't simply decouple from the need and suffering." But Orban, who since 2015 has positioned himself as Merkel's adversary in migration policy, said Europe best showed humanity by removing incentives for refugees to come to the continent. |

Cherry picking: China looks to replace US farm goods in trade war Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:06 AM PDT Simmering trade tensions between the world's top two economies are set to erupt into a full-blown trade war Friday, with Washington poised to impose new tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods. Beijing has pledged to hit back dollar for dollar, placing a new tax on American goods like cherries, soybeans, autos, pork and whiskey, putting them at a disadvantage to their global rivals. Washington's list is heavy on tech goods, aiming in part to shift supply chains away from China, while Beijing has put politically sensitive US farm goods in the firing line. |

The dead included four firefighters and two police officers who rushed to the scene after the first explosion, only to be killed by a second wave of blasts. Video shot from a nearby highway showed a massive plume of smoke rising up from the area of the explosions in the town of Tultepec. |

Firefighters make progress on Northern California wildfire Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:23 AM PDT By Dan Whitcomb and Keith Coffman LOS ANGELES/DENVER (Reuters) - Firefighters in Northern California have made progress on a stubborn blaze west of Sacramento, officials said on Thursday, allowing some residents to return to their homes after they were evacuated. In Colorado, meanwhile, firefighters were still battling eight major blazes that have burned over 140,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 homes, while authorities have arrested a person suspected of starting the largest blaze in that drought-stricken state. "The weather will become hotter and drier into the weekend and fire growth potential remains high." The so-called County Fire had consumed 86,000 acres (35,000 hectares) of grass, brush and dense scrub oak as of early Thursday, Cal Fire said. |

Egypt unearths ancient artefacts 'hidden' in WWII Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:55 AM PDT Hundreds of ancient pottery items have been discovered in an Alexandria museum in a hiding place "most probably" created during World War II, Egypt's antiquities ministry said Wednesday. Pots and other receptacles dating back to Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras were discovered "during restoration work" in a garden inside the Greco-Roman museum of Alexandria in northern Egypt, the ministry said in a statement. "These pots were most probably hidden by (British) archaeologist Alan Rowe and... employees in the museum's garden during World War II", Ayman Ashmawy, head of Egyptian antiquities at the ministry, said in the statement. |

Bird's nest collectors scour for ways into Thai cave Posted: 05 Jul 2018 03:28 AM PDT A team of bird's nest collectors from southern Thailand put their generations-old rock climbing know-how to use on Thursday by scouring a mountainside for openings that could lead to 12 young footballers and their coach trapped inside a flooded cave. The eight men, whose ages range from the 20s to the 50s, are Thai Muslims from Libong island in Trang province where they climb sheer limestone cliffs and explore crevices and caves to collect the edible nests, a delicacy made from solidified bird spit that can go for hundreds of dollars per kilo. "One member in our team was watching (the rescue mission) on television and thought 'how can we help them?'," Abdulrawheep Khunraksa, leader of the team, told AFP. |

Dotcom had asked the court to overturn two previous rulings that the Internet mogul and his three co-accused be sent to America to face charges. Instead, a panel of three judges backed the FBI-led case, which began with a raid on Dotcom's Auckland mansion in January 2012 and has dragged on for more than six years. |

Mexico authorities mulling $10 million fine for election victors Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:39 PM PDT By Bérengère Sim and Daina Beth Solomon MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's party could face a $10 million fine for violations of campaign finance rules, the national electoral institute said on Wednesday following the group's wide-reaching election victory. Lopez Obrador, a former Mexico City mayor who has vowed to root out corruption and make government contracts transparent, on Sunday won by a landslide while his leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA) took an outright majority in Congress. The possible fine of more than 197 million pesos, slated to be put to a vote by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on July 18, would be the largest related to campaign financing for the recently concluded election season. |
