Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush at National Harbor, Maryland, outside Washington, on February 27, 2015Presumed Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush said Sunday that he would have authorized the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, though he acknowledged mistakes made after Saddam Hussein's downfall. Bush, the son and brother of two former presidents, pointed out that Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton voted in favor of authorizing the use of force in Iraq ahead of the invasion. "I would have (authorized the invasion), and so would have Hillary Clinton, just to remind everybody," Bush told Fox News television in an interview to be aired late Monday.

Wobbly in the polls, what’s Jeb Bush’s comeback plan?

Posted: 10 May 2015 01:28 PM PDT

In the 2016 presidential race, former Florida governor Jeb Bush is generally seen as the favorite of establishment Republicans – which is not necessarily a good thing if you want to make it through the GOP's primary and caucus season successfully. Bush, meanwhile, was in Lynchburg, Va., as the commencement speaker at Liberty University, which was founded by the late Southern Baptist pastor and televangelist Jerry Falwell – probably a smart move since evangelical Protestants and other Christian conservatives (Bush is a converted Roman Catholic) are a key segment of the Republican base. Bush slammed liberals and the Bush administration for being "small-minded and intolerant" when it comes to religious beliefs and practices.

With Matisse and Van Gogh, Tehran gets a makeover

An Iranian woman walks past a pedestrian bridge on Modares highway with a reproduction of "The Son of Man" by Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte (1898-1967) in north Tehran on May 9, 2015Drivers and millions of commuters used to spending hours in Tehran traffic jams have at least had something nicer to look at during journeys this week: famous works of art. Vincent Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Edvard Munch's The Scream and The Blue Window by Henry Matisse are among the reproductions lining streets and highways, aiming to get citizens more interested in art and to encourage gallery visits. Some 1,600 billboards featuring 200 Western and Asian works and 500 Iranian ones now sit near murals of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his predecessor, the Islamic republic's founder Ruhollah Khomeini, and countless martyrs of the Iran-Iraq war. The art, all of which would have required approval by the culture ministry -- nudes are banned in Iran and other works risk being deemed un-Islamic -- may be considered a distraction as well as a welcome sight in a city where fatal road accidents and bad driving are common.

A British way for countries in divorce

The world should thus be grateful that the British election last week has helped ensure a peaceful approach to the secessionist cause in Scotland. The big news in the UK election was a victory for the Conservatives and its leader, Prime Minister David Cameron. The SNP won 56 of the 59 seats in Parliament from Scotland. Yet its victory in the UK election came just eight months after it lost a referendum on the question of independence from the UK.

New face but same old problems for EU foreign policy

EU foreign policy chief Mogherini arrives at an EU leaders summit in BrusselsBy Paul Taylor BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Europe's chequered attempt to build a common foreign and security policy has a new face, Italy's Federica Mogherini, but the European Union is stuck with the same old problems despite her bright start. In her first six months as EU foreign policy chief, the 41-year-old former Italian foreign minister has tried to harness Europe's soft power and diplomacy more effectively and initiated a review of the bloc's outdated security strategy and of its flawed "neighborhood policy". She has taken a higher public profile than her media-shy predecessor, Britain's Catherine Ashton, and is using her role as vice-president of the European Commission, which Ashton shunned, to coordinate the EU's trade, aid and state-building resources to maximize its toolkit.

US rights record in UN spotlight

The half-day public debate before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva comes as US authorities launched a civil rights investigation into Baltimore's police department following riots triggered by the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray in police custody last month. Monday's so-called Universal Periodic Review -- which all 193 UN countries must undergo every four years -- is likely to focus on a string of recent killings of unarmed black men like Gray by the police. The US delegation, headed by US ambassador to the council Keith Harper and acting US legal advisor Mary McLeod, were expected to face a range of questions about law enforcement tactics, police brutality and the disproportionate impact on African Americans and other minorities.

Republican candidates talk tough on Islamic State, offer few specifics

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Senator Marco Rubio speaks during the Freedom Summit in Greenville, South CarolinaBy James Oliphant GREENVILLE, S.C. (Reuters) - Seeking an edge on the national security issue, Republican presidential hopefuls on Saturday seized on the attack in Texas this week for which Islamic State claimed responsibility as an example of the threat they say the militant group poses to the United States. "It's not a matter of if another attempt is made on American soil, it is when," Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said at a gathering of declared or potential contenders in South Carolina. "I want a leader who is willing to take the fight to them before they take the fight to us." Two men were fatally shot on Sunday after opening fire with assault rifles at a heavily guarded exhibit of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in the Dallas suburb of Garland, Texas. The Syria- and Iraq-based Islamic State claimed responsibility, but offered no proof.
