San Francisco airport: Picture shows how close landing plane was to causing 'the worst aviation disaster in history'A picture and audio recording of a plane that almost crash landed into a busy taxiway has shed more light on what one aviation expert said could have been the "greatest aviation disaster in history". Air Canada Flight 759 was moments way from tragedy as it approached San Francisco International Airport, mistaking the taxiway for the runway, before pilots pulled the plane up again at just 18 metres above the ground to try another landing. United Airlines pilots queuing at the front of the taxiway alerted air traffic controllers, and Philippine Airlines pilots in the plane behind switched on their landing lights to signal danger.

Hyperloop pod travels 192mph in maiden journey

Posted: 03 Aug 2017 03:26 AM PDT

Hyperloop pod travels 192mph in maiden journeyThe ultra-fast Hyperloop is one step closer to becoming a reality after its pod travelled 192 miles per hour in its maiden journey.   Hyperloop One said its prototype for the high-speed transport system, which could travel from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes, reached the speed on a 500-metre-long test track in the Nevada desert.  The test marks the first time Hyperloop One has propelled one of its carriages along the tube, as well as the fastest journey for the technology. Hyperloop test The company completed its first trial in May, which involved a smaller trolley reaching a top speed of 70 miles per hour. It is a significant step in the development of the Hyperloop, a transport system first conceived by Elon Musk in 2015 that involves levitating pods travelling through a vacuum at 750 miles per hour. "This is the beginning, and the dawn of a new era of transportation," said Shervin Pishevar, co-founder of Hyperloop One. "We've reached historic speeds of 192 miles per hour and we're excited to finally show the world the XP-1 going into the Hyperloop One tube."  Prototypes for the futuristic mode of transport are being developed by a host of rival companies and research institutions. Hyperloop One is the first to test a working model of its magnetic levitating pods.  The Hyperloop One prototype pod travelled 192 miles per hour in the test Credit: Hyperloop One  Hyperloop One said the first generation of its levitating pod, which was unveiled last month, accelerated for 300 metres, reaching 192 miles per hour before coming to a halt. The XP-1 pod is 8.7 metres long, 2.4 metres wide and 2.7 metres tall.  Although Hyperloop One more than doubled its previous record with the run, it fell short of the 250 miles per hour target it had set. The trip brings the Hyperloop close to the 200 miles per hour of Japan's bullet train, but is still 50 miles per hour slower than the planned HS2.  FAQ | Hyperloop "We're excited about the prospects and the reception we've received from governments around the world to help solve their mass transportation and infrastructure challenges," said Rob Lloyd, chief executive of Hyperloop One. He added the company plans to discuss the technology with partners, customers and governments following the success of the trial. It is now looking to commercialise the transport system, which is still being developed. Proposed UK routes for the Hyperloop  Credit: Hyperloop One Hyperloop One said earlier this year that it will be some time before it becomes a reality because of the complexity of the technology.  Before it can accelerate to 750 miles per hour it will need to extend the 500 metre test track, built this year, as well as fine-tune the system.  The next phase of tests will focus on solving practical problems such as creating an air lock, rather than increasing speed, it said.  The California-based transport innovation firm has proposed nine Hyperloop routes in Europe, including three in the UK: London to Edinburgh, Cardiff to Glasgow, and Glasgow to Liverpool.  The crazy future of transport - in pictures

When is the Perseid Meteor shower and how can I see it?

Posted: 04 Aug 2017 05:55 AM PDT

When is the Perseid Meteor shower and how can I see it?The Perseids is an annual meteor shower that peaks around mid-August,with this year's peak expected between 11 and 13 August. It's regarded as one of the brightest and most visible meteor showers. Here's everything you need to know about the spectacle, including dates and where to see it.  #perseids are coming!! pic.twitter.com/F19pqGL3nO— GaryFildes (@TheGaryFildes) July 9, 2017 What is a meteor shower? Ameteor shower occurs when Earth passes through the debris stream occupying the orbit of a comet, in this case comet Swift-Tuttle. Perspective makes meteor showers appear to emanate from a single point in the sky known as the shower radiant. A typical meteor results from a particle the size of a grain of sand vaporising in Earth's atmosphere when it enters at 134,000mph. Something larger than a grape will produce a fireball and this is often accompanied by a persistent afterglow known as a meteor train. This is a column of ionised gas slowly fading from view as it loses energy. The Perseids appear to originate from within the star constellation Perseus, hence the shower's name. A shooting star, top left, is seen during the Perseid meteor shower in Poland in 2016.  Credit: EPA/LUKASZ OGRODOWCZYK When can I see the Perseid meteor shower? The window for this year's meteor shower is from July 17 to August 24. Stargazers stand a chance of seeing the shower at any point in this window, however the peak will occur around August 11, 12 and 13.  The best time to take a look at the sky will be from about 1am BST in the Northern Hemisphere until the onset of dawn twilight. Space.com says the moon, which will be three-quarters full at the time of the peak, will rise around 11pm meaning the spectacle will be trickier to see this year. However, sky-watchers should still be able to see the shower, despite the moon's glare.  Peak rates of 150-200 meteors per hour were recorded in 2016, but typical rates are about 80 meteors an hour streaking across the night sky, each leaving a trail.   Complete list of every full moon in 2017  The worlds best stargazing locations How can I see it? Choose a dark location away from stray lights and give yourself at least 20 minutes in total darkness to properly dark adapt. Look at a height approximately two-thirds up the sky in any direction. If you want a recommendation, east through south offers some great background constellations in the early hours during August. Look for the shower's "radiant" from the north-east corner of Perseus. Here are a few great places to view the shower. Galloway Forest Park: Galloway is a couple of hours from Glasgow and an hour from Carlisle. The park's most popular spot for stargazing is Loch Trool. Exmoor and around: Exmoor was granted International Dark-Sky Reserve status by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2011. Light pollution is managed to make the area more appealing to amateur astronomers. Romney Marsh: Night once provided cover for smugglers known as Owlers, but today Romney Marsh offers celestial bounty, arching over a landscape adorned with the spires of ancient churches. Kielder: Kielder Forest is officially the darkest place in England – 250 square miles of wooded beauty where Northumberland brushes against Scotland. It has its own fabulous, modern, wood-clad observatory on the slopes of Black Fell above Kielder Water. North York Moors: As well as stunning night skies, the North York Moors boast historic market towns such as Helmsley and Pickering, plus appealing coastal spots, including Scarborough and Whitby. Samsung has shipped over 20 million Galaxy S8 smartphones

Samsung has shipped over 20 million Galaxy S8 smartphones

If there was any concern that the Galaxy S8 would struggle to find a foothold in 2017 with the release of the 10th anniversary iPhone looming, those concerns have been allayed in the days, weeks and months following the launch of Samsung's latest flagship. On Thursday, citing market research firm Strategy Analytics, The Investor reported that Samsung has shipped over 20 million Galaxy S8 units.

Data compiled by the firm shows that Samsung has shipped 278,000 Galaxy S8 phones a day since the phone's release on April 21st. That amounts to 19.8 million shipments through June, which would have made 20 million shipments a fairly reasonable expectation for the end of July.

As The Investor notes, Samsung's mobile division chief Koh Dong-Jin said at a media event last month that the Galaxy S8 had outsold the Galaxy S7 by 15% in the same three-month period after launch. Then in a conference call, the company stated that S8 sales in some regions have already doubled S7 sales at the same time last year, despite the S8 launching a month later than the S7.

While Apple is sure to turn heads and break records with the iPhone 8/iPhone X/iPhone Pro later this fall, Samsung has done more than tread water in the interim. At this point, it's clear that any misgivings consumers had over the Note 7 debacle have dissipated. And on top of the Galaxy S8's success, Samsung will try to keep the ball rolling when it introduces the Galaxy Note 8 at an event in NYC on August 23rd. Based on what we've seen, it could be another smash hit.

The bill, which must be approved by the full Senate and House of Representatives before becoming law, is intended to stop the Palestinian Authority from paying the stipends, which can reach $3,500 per month.
