Pope to meet US Church leaders after abuse cover-up claim Posted: 11 Sep 2018 04:56 PM PDT Pope Francis will meet leaders of the US Catholic Church on Thursday, the Vatican announced, after a high profile accusation that the pontiff covered up sexual abuse allegations against an American cardinal. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, will attend the meeting after saying last month he was eager to meet the pope following the scandal. Two other conference officials will be at the meeting, as will Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the head of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said on Tuesday. |

Goldman banker had raised ethics concerns: NYT Posted: 11 Sep 2018 06:51 AM PDT (Reuters) - A former Goldman Sachs Group Inc partner had raised concerns about some unethical practices at the bank before he left in 2015, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing people close to the matter. James Katzman, who led the bank's West Coast mergers-and-acquisitions practice, had used the whistle-blower hotline in 2014 to report on the investment bank trying to hire a customer's child and colleagues' repeated attempts to obtain and then share confidential client information, the paper reported https://nyti.ms/2CJ9wEq. The investigation was taken up by the bank's general counsel and Katzman was urged to move past his complaints by several senior investment banking executives, the newspaper reported, citing several people familiar with the interactions. |

Uganda's Museveni blames 'external forces' for opposition unrest Posted: 10 Sep 2018 04:31 AM PDT Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has accused "external forces" of trying to foment trouble by funding his political opponents in a bid to undermine the country's image abroad. In an hours-long televised speech late on Sunday, the 74-year-old railed against the opposition and accused "external forces" of seeking to "sabotage" Uganda's growth. Museveni, who took power in 1986, claimed "foreign money" was being funnelled to his political opponents by unnamed NGOs to foment trouble by paying youngsters to burn tyres and throw rocks at police. |

25 years after Oslo, young Palestinians see little hope Posted: 11 Sep 2018 04:01 AM PDT Abed Zughayer is like many young Palestinians when he considers the legacy of the Oslo accords, the first of which was signed 25 years ago this week. "The Oslo accords are wrong," Zughayer, who was five when Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin famously shook hands on the White House lawn to seal the first of the agreements on September 13, 1993. Many young Palestinians who came of age after the Oslo accords see the landmark agreements which were supposed to lead to peace as a betrayal that has only consolidated Israel's occupation. |

Posted: 10 Sep 2018 08:47 AM PDT A missing Maltese professor who promised the Trump campaign "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the presidential election may be dead, a US court has been told. Joseph Mifsud, a former teaching fellow at Stirling University, held meetings in 2016 with George Papadopoulos, a former Trump administration foreign policy adviser who was jailed last week for lying to the FBI, including over his connections to the 57-year-old professor. Prosecutors in the Papadopoulos case allege Mr Mifsud touted his "substantial connections with Russian government officials", who could deliver "thousands of emails" featuring incriminating information against Ms Clinton. |
Alibaba's Jack Ma to step down in one year, hand baton to CEO Zhang Posted: 09 Sep 2018 11:36 PM PDT Jack Ma, the charismatic co-founder of China's largest e-commerce firm Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, will step down as chairman in one year to concentrate on philanthropy and education, passing on the reins to trusted lieutenant Daniel Zhang. Ma, who turned 54 on Monday, has long flagged plans to step back, insisting that Alibaba management should be relatively young and his retirement is not expected to affect the running of the company. No other tech founder in the world has just resigned like that at the top," said Rupert Hoogewerf, Shanghai-based founder of the Hurun Report, which publishes an annual influential list of China's richest people. |
Trump's tweet doesn't convince Ford to build small crossover SUV in US Posted: 10 Sep 2018 05:06 AM PDT A tweet from the Oval Office on Sunday wasn't enough to convince Ford Motor Company to build a new compact crossover SUV version of its Focus in the U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Ford's announcement last month that the administration's tariffs on goods including cars imported from China prompted it to cancel plans to import the 2020 Focus Active. "Ford has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs." CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 9, 2018 A Ford spokesman responded on Twitter. "It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S. given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment," Ford spokesman Mike Levine said. The Focus Active, Ford's answer to the popular Subaru Crosstrek, will still be assembled in China for other global markets. The automaker said earlier this year that as part of its $11 billion restructuring, it will stop selling its Ford Fusion, Taurus, Fiesta, and Focus in the U.S. and cancel all of its sedans and hatchbacks over the next couple of years to sell more profitable crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. Assembly of the Focus in the U.S. ended in May and the automaker plans to cut off Fiesta and Taurus production during the 2019 model year. Its Fusion mid-size sedan will continue for about another year and the nameplate may morph into a crossover SUV |

Exclusive: Venezuela signs oil deals similar to ones rolled back under Chavez - document Posted: 10 Sep 2018 12:32 PM PDT The effort signals that President Nicolas Maduro, who is struggling under a hyper-inflationary economic meltdown and fast-declining oil output, is willing to reverse the aggressive efforts of his predecessor - who died in 2013 - to expand the state's role in the energy industry of the OPEC nation. The government had already announced a vague plan to boost oil output with the help of seven companies. The plan was described during a televised event on Aug. 28 in which representatives of those companies, during a ceremony including Maduro, signed "joint service agreements" with PDVSA. |

Erdogan urges Russia, Iran to stop 'disaster' in Idlib Posted: 11 Sep 2018 03:40 AM PDT Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday called on Russia and Iran to halt a looming "humanitarian disaster" in Idlib, saying Syrians there could not be left to the mercy of President Bashar al-Assad. Erdogan has called for a ceasefire in the northwestern province of Idlib, the last rebel stronghold in Syria, as an assault by Syrian government forces is expected any day. Writing in the Wall Street Journal, Erdogan said the West had an "obligation to stop the next bloodshed" but that regime allies Moscow and Tehran were "likewise responsible for stopping this humanitarian disaster". |
