Amid complaints of unwanted touching, Biden jokes he got 'permission' to hug Posted: 05 Apr 2019 11:22 AM PDT By James Oliphant WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, facing a growing swell of allegations that he has made women uncomfortable with his use of physical contact, made light of the controversy on Friday while continuing to lay the groundwork for a 2020 presidential run. Speaking to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Washington, Biden joked that he "had permission" to hug the union's male president, Lonnie Stephenson. The welcoming, mostly male audience responded with laughter and cheers. ... |

Philippines' Duterte warns China to back off disputed island Posted: 04 Apr 2019 06:43 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has warned Beijing to back off from a disputed island in the South China Sea, warning of possible military action if China "touches" it amid rising tensions over the key waterway. Duterte, aiming to attract trade and investment from the Asian superpower, has mostly withheld his early criticism of Beijing's expansive claims to the sea -- a point of regional contention because trillions of dollars of goods pass through it. "I will not plead or beg, but I am just telling you that lay off the Pag-asa because I have soldiers there," Duterte said in speech to prosecutors. |

Biden Jokes About Consensual Hugging in First Speech Since Creepy Touching Allegations Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:04 AM PDT APIn his first public remarks since more than half a dozen women accused him of inappropriately touching them, former Vice President Joe Biden warned a raucous crowd of union workers in Washington, D.C., that their warm reception "may go to my head!"A few moments later, Biden proved himself right.Less than one minute into his speech before the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Biden joked that "I just want you to know, I had permission to hug Lonnie," referring to union president Lonnie R. Stephenson, and making light of charges made by seven women that he touched, hugged, kissed and physically handled them in ways that made them uncomfortable. The audience of union workers, nearly entirely male, reacted to the joke with hoots, cheers, and whistles."I don't know, man," Biden continued over the laughter. "Anyway."The former vice president then continued with his address, making no further mention of the allegations against him until making another joke, this time after having approached the children of some union workers who had assembled on the podium and wrapping his arm around the neck of the boy closest to him."By the way, he gave me permission to touch him," Biden said, to further applause.Speaking to reporters after the speech's conclusion, Biden said that he "wouldn't be surprised" if other women came forward with allegations that he crossed a line in touching, caressing or kissing them, but suggested that the onus was on the women to make it clear before he touched them."It is important that I and every one else is aware that any woman or man who feels uncomfortable, should have the right to say 'I'm uncomfortable with that' or hopefully get to the point before and say 'I'm uncomfortable with that, no matter what.' I really do understand it."Biden also denied that he had joked about the issue of consensual touching in his speech."I wasn't joking," Biden said. "The president of the union put his arms around me. That's how it's always been. That's how people react."Asked if he felt that he owed the women an apology, Biden initially dodged the question before allowing that while he was "sorry I didn't understand, I'm not sorry for any of my intentions. I'm not sorry for anything I've done."Biden's decision to make mockery of the issue of consensual physical contact on the campaign trail—sparked by former Democratic candidate for Nevada lieutenant governor Lucy Flores, who wrote about an alleged incident in a piece for New York Magazine's "The Cut"—is a departure from a video he released hastily on Thursday, in which he offered qualified contrition for making any women feel uncomfortable."In my career I've always tried to make a human connection, that's my responsibility," Biden said in the video. "Whether they're men, women, young, old—it's the way I've always been. It's the way I try to show I care about them and I'm listening... It's just who I am."Flores, of course, was not impressed with Biden's comments Friday, tweeting: "It's clear @JoeBiden hasn't reflected at all on how his inappropriate and unsolicited touching made women feel uncomfortable. To make light of something as serious as consent degrades the conversation women everywhere are courageously trying to have." Asked by The Daily Beast if this helped solidify her rationale for coming forward, Flores said: "Yes. Until his type of inappropriate behavior, which to be clear, isn't friendly hugs, is taken seriously, women will continue to feel disempowered to speak out against inappropriate behavior."Biden, who is approaching a potential third run for the Democratic presidential nomination, acknowledged in the video that "social norms" have changed, and that he would be more "mindful" in the future. "They've shifted, and the boundaries in protecting personal space have been reset. And I get it," Biden said. "I'll be much more mindful and will respect it."Biden has styled himself as a champion for women's rights, pointing to his authorship of the Violence Against Women Act, but skeptics have pointed to the charges against him, as well as his mishandling of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' confirmation hearings, as evidence that he does not adequately understand the post-MeToo political climate."As human beings, we all make mistakes," said Sukari Hardnett, who Biden refused to allow to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of Anita Hill, who in 1991 accused Thomas of sexual harassment. "But what's critical is that we learn from those mistakes."The former vice president's nascent presidential campaign has struggled to shake the allegations, in part because there is no official campaign organization to do so. On Thursday, The Daily Beast reported that some of Biden's advisers have become convinced that the stories of women having been made to feel physically uncomfortable around the former vice president as "all coming out of Bernie World," insinuating that Flores' allegations were made to support the candidacy of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).Sanders' campaign fervently denied that implication."Neither the Bernie Sanders campaign nor anyone involved in it, planted, planned, persuaded, cajoled or otherwise urged Lucy Flores or anyone else to tell their story. Full stop, period, end of sentence. I don't want to hear it. We didn't play a role," Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir told The Daily Beast.—With reporting by Gideon Resnick.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here |

U.S. Senate Republicans change procedures to speed up Trump confirmations Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:04 PM PDT The move to shorten debate on such nominees from 30 hours to two hours was resisted by Democrats but they could not block it because Republicans hold 53 seats in the 100-seat chamber. Senator Mitch McConnell used his powers as majority leader to make the change, which will set a precedent that will apply to district court judges, the lowest rung of the judiciary, but not vacancies in the Supreme Court and federal appeals courts. The Senate has historically provided greater protection for whichever party is in the minority than the 435-seat House of Representatives by allowing longer debating time before votes and requiring 60 yes votes for most approvals. |

Body of Israeli soldier missing since 1982 Lebanon War found by Russian and Syrian armies Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:19 AM PDT The body of an Israeli soldier missing since the 1982 Lebanon War was found by the Russian and Syrian armies, Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, said yesterday. But Syrian state news agency SANA said Damascus had no details on the discovery of the corpse. Sergeant First Class Zachary Baumel had been listed as missing along with two other Israeli soldiers after a deadly battle with Syrian forces in a Lebanese village, and the return of his remains will bring to a close a highly sensitive case for Israelis. Russia said it handed over the remains to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, who is visiting Putin five days before he is to seek a fifth term in office in a difficult election. Mr Netanyahu, 69, is running in the April 9 vote despite facing potential corruption charges and experts say he hopes the Moscow visit will increase his chances of success on election day. "We are very happy that he will be able to receive the right military honours in his homeland." Mr Netanyahu said Mr Baumel would be laid to rest at a ceremony in Israel later Thursday. "Zachary's friends and family will take part," he said, adding that his family had been "very touched". "His father is no longer alive, unfortunately," he added. "His mother is around 100 years old. Zachary also has a sister." Neither Russia nor Israel have given details on how or where the remains were found. Mr Putin said only that Syria - with which Israel has technically been at war - participated in the operation. |

Posted: 05 Apr 2019 03:26 AM PDT Donald Trump has attacked the late former first lady Barbara Bush in a newspaper interview a day after posting a satirical alt-right meme of ex-vice-president Joe Biden on Twitter."I see that you are on the job and presidential, as always," Mr Biden responded witheringly to the tweet, which sits pinned to the top of the president's Twitter profile. The video in question sends up Mr Biden's apology after he was accused of inappropriate conduct towards female campaign staff and was circulated by Donald Trump Jr earlier on Thursday.Mr Trump is due in Calexico, California, on Friday to inspect construction work on his US-Mexico wall after rowing back on his threat to close the border, the trip providing a timely change of focus for the president after thousands of protesters campaigned outside the White House and in New York's Times Square to demand the release of the Mueller report in full. Please allow a moment for our liveblog to load |
Elizabeth Warren Issues Her Strongest Indictment of the Filibuster Yet Posted: 05 Apr 2019 05:14 AM PDT Lev Radin/GettySen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is expected to issue the strongest indictment of the Senate filibuster of her campaign for president thus far during a speech at the National Action Network convention on Friday morning. "Last year the Senate passed a bill that would make lynching a federal crime," Warren will say, according to prepared remarks viewed by The Daily Beast. "Last year. In 2018. Do you know when the first bill to make lynching a federal crime was introduced? 1918. One hundred years ago. And it nearly became the law back then. It passed the House in 1922. But it got killed in the Senate—by a filibuster. And then it got killed again. And again. And again. More than 200 times. An entire century of obstruction because a small group of racists stopped the entire nation from doing what was right."Warren goes on to say that the filibuster has been used in recent years "by the far right as a tool to block progress on everything." "I've only served one term in the Senate—but I've seen what's happening," she says, according to the remarks. "We all saw what they did to President Obama. I've watched Republicans abuse the rules when they're out of power, then turn around and blow off the rules when they're in power."Democrats running for president in 2020 have been debating Senate rules for months, as activists push for a change that would not necessitate a 60-vote supermajority to pass sought-after legislation like Medicare for All or the Green New Deal, both of which have been endorsed by a large share of the Democratic candidates currently running. But many of the same candidates, including the senators in the race, have been resistant to institutional changes. The one candidate who has affirmatively campaigned on its elimination in order to address climate change is Washington Gov. Jay Inslee. Many others, like Warren before Friday, had said they'd consider it, and she previously said "all the options are on the table."But these new comments mark a shift in Warren's thinking on the matter, arriving as the Republican-led Senate invoked the "nuclear option" again this week to expedite the appointment of President Trump's nominees. "So let me be as clear as I can," Warren says in the remarks. "When Democrats next have power, we should be bold and clear: We're done with two sets of rules—one for the Republicans and one for the Democrats. And that means when Democrats have the White House again, if Mitch McConnell tries to do what he did to President Obama, and puts small-minded partisanship ahead of solving the massive problems facing this country, then we should get rid of the filibuster."An aide to the senator told The Daily Beast that McConnell's actions alone this week didn't motivate the subtle change in thinking."We can't sit around for 100 years while the rich and powerful get richer and more powerful and everyone else falls further and further behind," Warren continues. "We can't sit around for 100 years while climate change destroys our planet, while corruption pervades every nook and cranny of Washington, and while too much of a child's fate in life still rests on the color of their skin."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Timmothy Pitzen: Teenager tells police he is missing child who vanished eight years ago in Illinois Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:18 PM PDT Police in Kentucky are trying to determine the identity of a teenager who says he is a child who went missing more than seven years ago, and who told officers he fled kidnappers who held him as prisoner all that time.In 2011, Timmothy Pitzen, 6, was picked up at school by his mother in Illinois, taken to a zoo and a water park, before she killed herself at a hotel, leaving a note in which she said her son was fine but that no one would ever find him. On Wednesday, a 14-year-old came forward to tell police he was Timmothy. He reportedly told officers he had fled across a bridge in Cincinnati over the Ohio River into Kentucky."We've probably had thousands of tips of him popping up in different areas," Aurora police officer Bill Rowley told the Associated Press. "We have no idea what we're driving down there for. It could be Pitzen. It could be a hoax."Timmothy Pitzen's grandmother, Alana Anderson, told WISN-TV on Wednesday that authorities had told the family "very little". "We just know a 14-year-old boy was found and went to the police," Ms Anderson said. "We don't want to get our hopes up and our family's hopes up until we know something. We just don't want to get our hopes up. We've had false reports and false hopes before."Police in the Cincinnati suburb of Sharonville wrote in a short incident report that the boy said he had "just escaped from two kidnappers". He described them as white men with body builder-type physiques. They were in a Ford SUV with Wisconsin license plates and had been staying at a Red Roof Inn. CBS News said it spoke to the person who dialled the emergency services."He said he had escaped," said the woman who called 911. "He said he was missing from Illinois. That's what he said."The channel said that in May 2011, the boy's mother picked him up from school in Aurora. Amy Fry-Pitzen then took him on a two-day trip to the Brookfield Zoo, a water park in Gurnee, and final the Wisconsin Dells, where the last known sighting of Timothy was caught on tape. Two days later, Ms Fry-Pitzen was found dead in a Rockford hotel along with a note saying that her son was safe, but no one would find him. |

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Take $39,000 Babymoon Posted: 05 Apr 2019 03:25 AM PDT CHRIS JACKSONAnyone who has ever employed a contractor will sympathize with the plight Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves in as they waited desperately for their new home at Frogmore Cottage to be finished ahead of the birth of their baby. But overruns (caused in part by the couple changing their minds) kept pushing back their move-in date. Not everyone, however, would have been in a position to ameliorate the tension by whisking their wife off for three days to a luxury hotel costing $13,000 per night while the last bits of snagging were taken care of.However, that's what Harry did this week, according to a report in The Sun, booking a $39,000 babymoon at the five-star Heckfield Place hotel in Hampshire. The Sun says they spent their three nights at the hotel, largely tucked away in their suite, which boasts its own dining room and two private terraces, enjoying cozy fireside meals.A friend told The Sun: "Meghan is only a couple of weeks away from giving birth, so Harry really wanted to treat her."It is, of course, entirely possible they did not pay full price for the stay at the hotel, which is owned by U.S. billionaire Gerald Chan. (Kensington Palace declined to comment.)Harry and Meghan are now believed to have moved into Frogmore Cottage, increasing speculation that they may be planning to have their baby in Windsor rather than London. The house was previously divided up into apartments for royal staff and has been the subject of a multimillion-dollar conversion, paid for by British taxpayers, although Harry and Meghan will pay for their furnishings themselves. May's Bid to Break Brexit Impasse Stalls as Labour Disappointed Posted: 05 Apr 2019 04:07 PM PDT Prime Minister Theresa May's attempt to break the deadlock over Brexit stalled after the opposition Labour Party said she hasn't offered "real change" to her policy. The stalemate will make it harder for May to argue at a summit next week that she needs only a short extension to Britain's EU membership to get a Brexit deal approved at home. May has failed to get the accord she negotiated with EU leaders ratified by a divided Parliament and so has turned to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for help. |

"Mr. Smollett has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019, McCaffrey said. "The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook Country." Smollett, who is black and gay, touched off a social media fire storm by telling police on Jan. 29 that two apparent supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him. |
