CNN, NBC scrap Hillary Clinton TV projects Posted: 30 Sep 2013 04:26 PM PDT By Liana B. Baker and Gabriel Debenedetti (Reuters) - Two television projects focused on Hillary Clinton got the axe on Monday after the programs became embroiled in partisan wrangling, including threats by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to boycott presidential debates sponsored by CNN and NBC. The filmmaker for CNN said he could not complete the project because he'd received no cooperation from either Democrats or Republicans, while industry sources said NBC's move had nothing to do with the RNC, the Clintons or NBC News, which is run separately from NBC's entertainment unit. ... |
ACTIONS MUST FOLLOW WORDS IN IRAN Posted: 30 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- American youngsters' love affair with their cellphones may be the greatest waste of time since Marie Antoinette packed up her Angora cats and her cakes and tried to escape to exile in Maine. But cynical Americans who don't get the importance of one recent phone call -- between Iran's new president and President Obama after the opening of the United Nations last week -- are really missing the point of one of the great moments of modern history. One has the right, of course, to be suspicious. ... |

Car bombs kill 54 in Shi'ite districts of Baghdad Posted: 30 Sep 2013 12:34 PM PDT By Kareem Raheem BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Car bombs killed at least 54 people in mostly Shi'ite Muslim areas of Baghdad on Monday as suspected Sunni Muslim militants pursued a campaign to plunge Iraq back into sectarian strife. Altogether 14 bombs shook Baghdad, the deadliest of them in Sadr City, where a white car blew up near where men had gathered to seek work, killing seven people, including two soldiers. "The driver said he would move the car soon, but it exploded a few minutes later," said Abu Mohammed, a worker at the scene, where bits of molten metal lay among cars wrecked in the blast. ... |

Pentagon chief, at Korean DMZ, says U.S. will not cut force in Korea Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:19 AM PDT By David Alexander PANMUNJOM, Korean Demilitarized Zone (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel toured the Korean DMZ on Monday under the watchful eye of North Korean soldiers and said the Pentagon had no plans to reduce its 28,500-member force in the South despite budget constraints. "This is probably the only place in the world where we have always a risk of confrontation," Hagel said after visiting a blue, single-story building with a corrugated metal roof where talks are held with North Koreans in the truce village of Panmunjom. ... |
Exclusive: Vatican Bank likely to close embassy accounts after Iran, Iraq red flags Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:02 AM PDT By Lisa Jucca and Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican bank is likely to close all accounts held by foreign embassies, following concerns about large cash deposits and withdrawals by the missions of Iran, Iraq and Indonesia, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The Vatican's financial watchdog, which examined the transactions in 2011, believed the embassies' justifications for the transactions were too vague or disproportionate to the amounts -- up to 500,000 euros at a time -- these people said. ... |
UN: Syria refugee crisis hurting region's economy Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:52 AM PDT BERLIN (AP) — The exodus of Syrians from their country threatens economic development throughout the Middle East because neighboring nations cannot cope with the influx of refugees, a top U.N. official said Monday. A U.S. diplomat, meanwhile, called for an action plan to deal with the extraordinary refugee crisis. |
Competition between Islamist militants may fuel big attacks Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:51 AM PDT By Myra MacDonald LONDON (Reuters) - The assault on Kenya's Westgate shopping mall has brought into sharp relief a pattern likely to complicate efforts to counter Islamist militants - competition among jihadis can increase the risk of a major attack. As with the 2008 assault on the Indian city of Mumbai and this year's raid on an Algerian desert gas plant, the attack in Nairobi by Somalia's al Shabaab was preceded by in-fighting or loss of supporters to other militant groups. ... |

Analysis: From Syria to South China Sea, navies cruise back into vogue Posted: 30 Sep 2013 07:03 AM PDT By Peter Apps LONDON (Reuters) - After a quarter century of Middle Eastern land wars and a sharp fall in big powers' naval spending after the Cold War, sea power is back in vogue in response to the rise of China and Western reluctance to deploy ground troops in conflicts like Syria. The greater interest in navies is being felt from the corridors of Washington to the pirate hunting grounds off Africa and the shipyards of Asia. ... |

Oman looks beyond Iran sanctions for gas lifeline Posted: 29 Sep 2013 11:27 PM PDT By Daniel Fineren DUBAI (Reuters) - If Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's dream of reaching a deal with world powers on Tehran's nuclear program in six months comes true, Oman, an important intermediary in the dispute, could be a big winner. There have been too many false dawns in Iran's decade-old standoff with the West over Tehran's nuclear program to bank on Rouhani's call in New York last week for a deal within 3-6 months. ... |
