Close the Borders, Monitor Muslims: GOP Candidates Respond to ISIS AttacksThe terrorist bombings in Brussels Tuesday that killed at least 30 people and left dozens of others injured quickly permeated the U.S presidential campaign. Republicans renewed their criticism of President Obama's handling of the war on ISIS, with the GOP candidates proposing a number of extreme measures to protect the U.S. from similar attacks. Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump called for U.S. authorities to "close up our borders" to prevent the infiltration of terrorists, while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) proposed authorizing police surveillance of neighborhoods with large numbers of Muslim residents to try to ferret out conspiracies of future attacks.

Brussels attacks show how presidential candidates differ on security

Many voters have already heard of Donald Trump's plan to ban all Muslims entering the country "until we can figure out what's going," as he suggested in December. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing attacks at the Belgian capital's airport and subway system. Experts have said some of Trump's antiterror prescriptions might be illegal (targeting family members) or perhaps impossible (shutting down portions of the Internet).

Brussels attacks another reminder of Belgian security's weak link

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 01:55 PM PDT

By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The Belgian government warned at the weekend that there might be an attack after the security services captured their most wanted man. Tuesday's explosions, which killed at least 30 people at the main Brussels airport and an underground rail station, came just days after Belgium's security services caught the last surviving suspect in November's attacks on Paris. Belgium has announced 400 million euros ($450 million) of extra spending to upgrade its security capabilities since it emerged that the country of 11 million people served as the base for the Paris attackers who killed 130 people.

A Belgian emergency vehicle drives past passengers evacuating the Brussels Airport on March 22, 2016, after a string of explosionsThe carnage unleashed in Brussels on Tuesday shows that the Islamic State group is still capable of staging mass-casualty attacks in Belgium and Europe despite an intensifying security crackdown, experts say. A senior French counter-terrorism official said the attacks were unlikely to be a direct response to the arrest in Brussels just four days ago of Salah Abdeslam, suspected of being the last surviving member of the jihadist team that struck Paris in November. Instead, the official said Tuesday's bombings, also claimed by IS, were more likely a response to previous police raids in Belgium, such as an operation in the town of Verviers in January 2015 when two jihadists were killed and another arrested.

Sanders' Attacks on Clinton's Foreign Policy Could Help TrumpSenate Democrats and others have been encouraging Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont to abandon his quest for the Democratic presidential nomination and turn his attention to helping frontrunner Hillary Rodham Clinton get ready to take on a formidable Donald Trump this fall. While the democratic socialist has a chance on Tuesday night to reboot his campaign with strong showings in Arizona, Utah and Idaho after a substantial loss from Clinton last week in five important states including Florida and Ohio, the delegate math is working against him and many analysts say it would be near impossible for Sanders to overtake Clinton before the Democratic convention this summer. Brussels bombings put 'the whole of Europe' under attack

Posted: 22 Mar 2016 08:04 AM PDT

The outpouring of support for Belgium across Europe in the wake of the deadly terrorist attack in Brussels during rush hour this morning is more than just the solidarity expressed after a tragedy. As the de facto hub of the European Union and base of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the bombings at the city's international airport and underground subway system, killing at least 30 people, have struck at the heart of the European Union. Already under stress from the migration crisis that has spurred infighting and border closures across the bloc, today's attacks in the European capital further challenge the EU's solidarity against extremism.

Iraq will not resume pumping crude through a Kurdish pipeline to Turkey unless it reaches a financial agreement with the Kurdish regional government, the Iraqi oil minister said on Tuesday. Adel Abdul Mahdi confirmed on his Facebook page that the central Iraqi government had decided to stop pumping crude from fields under the management of its state-run company in northern Iraq through the pipeline. He said state-run North Oil Company previously fed 150,000 barrels a day into the pipeline that carries crude from the Kirkuk fields and other reservoirs managed by the Kurdish authorities to the Turkish Mediterranean terminal of Ceyhan. Much of Iraq's north and west fell to the Islamic State group in the summer of 2014, but over the past year Iraq's military has slowly clawed back pockets of territory. While IS still controls a large swath of Iraq and neighboring Syria, the group has lost an estimated 40 percent of the territory it once held in Iraq, according to U.S.-led coalition officials. (AP Photo/Maya Alleruzzo)AL-TASH, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi security forces, supported by coalition airstrikes, are clearing territory northwest of Baghdad along the Euphrates River valley as they continue to prepare a push to retake the Islamic State group-held city of Mosul. But progress on the ground has been slowed by skirmishes elsewhere and by a political crisis that has prompted the government to pull some forces back from the front to secure the capital.

Obama's confidential message to Haider al-Abadi, which was confirmed to Reuters by two U.S. officials and has not been previously reported, was not about Islamic State or Iraq's sectarian divide. The president's personal intervention indicates how the fragile Mosul Dam has moved to the forefront of U.S. concerns over Iraq, reflecting fears its failure would also undermine U.S. efforts to stabilize Abadi's government and complicate the war against Islamic State.
