Tunisia's hopes for truth to set it free

As Iraqi troops move closer to retaking the city of Mosul from Islamic State, one concern is that the mainly Shiite forces might extract revenge on Sunni civilians suspected of having supported the militant group. Islamic State itself justifies its vicious acts as permissible retribution for historical grievances. For two days last week, people in the North African nation of Tunisia were glued to their TVs and radios listening to the accounts of victims of torture and other violence committed by previous brutal dictatorships for nearly half a century.

Iraqi Shi'ite fighters mass near flashpoint town west of Mosul

By Isabel Coles TAL AFAR AIR BASE, Iraq (Reuters) - Convoys of military vehicles loaded with Shi'ite paramilitary fighters hurtled across desert terrain in northwestern Iraq towards the Islamic State-held city of Tal Afar, chanting religious slogans and covering their faces to keep out the dust. After routing the militants from an air base south of Tal Afar several days ago, a coalition of Shi'ite paramilitaries known as the Hashid Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), is preparing to finish the task of encircling the city.  "Our goal is clear: it is to liberate all Iraqi land and sever supply routes from Raqqa in Syria," said commander Abu Mohammed al-Attabi, at the base from which a silo in the center of Tal Afar is clearly visible. Astride the main road between Mosul and Syria, Tal Afar has been a center for insurgents in Iraq since 2003, producing several senior Islamic State members and many of its foot soldiers.  Once Tal Afar has been completely surrounded, local fighters under the command of the Hashid will be first to enter the city, which had a mixed population of mainly Shi'ite and Sunni Turkmen before Islamic State overran it in 2014.

Five weeks into the U.S.-backed offensive on Mosul, Islamic State is fighting in the area of Tal Afar, 60 km (40 miles) to the west, against a coalition of Iranian-backed groups known as Popular Mobilisation forces. Cutting the western road to Tal Afar would seal off Mosul as the city is already surrounded to the north, south and east by Iraqi government and Kurdish peshmerga forces.

Obama offers bleak assessment of situation in Syria

Posted: 20 Nov 2016 06:21 PM PST

U.S. President Obama holds a press conference at the APEC Summit in Lima, PeruBy Jeff Mason LIMA (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Sunday that chaos in Syria could persist for "quite some time" and that Russian and Iranian support for President Bashar al-Assad's air campaign had emboldened the Syrian leader's crackdown on rebels. "I am not optimistic about the short-term prospects in Syria," Obama said at a news conference in Lima at the conclusion of a summit with leaders of Pacific Rim countries. "Once Russia and Iran made a decision to back Assad and a brutal air campaign and essentially a pacification of Aleppo regardless of civilian casualties, children being killed or wounded, schools or hospitals being destroyed, then it was very hard to see a way in which even a trained and committed moderate opposition could hold its ground for long periods of time," he said.
