IS releases video of 'Paris attackers' Posted: 24 Jan 2016 01:20 PM PST The Islamic State group released a video Sunday purporting to show nine jihadists behind the November Paris attacks that killed 130 people, in which they threaten "coalition" countries including Britain. The video posted on jihadist websites is entitled "Kill wherever you find them", and shows four Belgians, three French citizens and two Iraqis said to be responsible for the attacks. The video, produced by IS's Al-Hayat Media Centre, describes the nine jihadists as "lions" who "brought France to its knees". |
Almost 60 probes into British soldiers' actions in Iraq dropped Posted: 24 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST Almost 60 investigations into British soldiers accused of unlawful killings during the war in Iraq have been dropped, defence ministry officials said Sunday. The Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT), set up to investigate allegations by Iraqi civilians of abuse by British soldiers between the US-led invasion in 2003 and 2009 when British combat troops left, has decided not to proceed in 57 cases. It follows an announcement by Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron of proposals to stop returned soldiers "being hounded by lawyers over claims that are totally without foundation". |
Iraq summons Saudi envoy over comments on Iran-backed militias Posted: 24 Jan 2016 11:02 AM PST By Maher Chmaytelli and Stephen Kalin BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq summoned the new Saudi ambassador on Sunday after he suggested Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias were exacerbating sectarian tensions and should leave the fight against Islamic State to the Iraqi army and official security forces. Baghdad's move underscores the depth of enmity between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslim powers as sectarian conflicts rage in Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Riyadh only reopened its embassy in Baghdad last month, shut down since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. |
Sanctions lifted, Iran's Rouhani heads to Europe to drum up business Posted: 24 Jan 2016 10:35 AM PST By John Irish and Crispian Balmer PARIS/ROME (Reuters) - President Hassan Rouhani brings the case to Europe this week for Iran as a potential investment bonanza, after the lifting of financial sanctions brought his country of 80 million people back into the world of global commerce. Rouhani, a pragmatist elected in 2013 on a platform to reduce Iran's isolation, championed the deal under which Iran curbed its nuclear program in return for the lifting of U.S., EU and United Nations sanctions this month. On his first trip abroad since the accord took effect, he will lead a 120-strong delegation that includes Iranian entrepreneurs as well as the oil and gas minister and other government officials for five days in Paris and Rome. |
Iraq summons Saudi envoy for 'interference' in its affairs Posted: 24 Jan 2016 10:31 AM PST Iraq's foreign ministry summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Baghdad on Sunday to protest his "interference" in the country's internal affairs over remarks on militia forces fighting the Islamic State group. The foreign ministry summoned Sabhan "to inform him of its official protest regarding his media statements that represented interference in Iraqi internal affairs," it said in a statement. |

U.S.-led coalition conducts 23 strikes on Islamic State militants Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:43 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A coalition led by the United States conducted 16 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq on Saturday, and also targeted the jihadist group seven times in Syria, according to a U.S. military statement. The Iraq strikes were concentrated near Ramadi, where six bombardments destroyed staging areas, a vehicle and a fuel tank while hitting two tactical units and denying Islamic State access to terrain, the Coalition Joint Task Force statement released on Sunday said. ... |
Algeria summons Morocco envoy, detains Moroccans headed to Libya -sources Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:17 AM PST Algerian authorities have detained over 200 Moroccans at Algiers airport and summoned the Moroccan envoy to explain an "unusual" increase in the number of Moroccans apparently trying to cross into Libya, airport and government officials said on Sunday. The foreign ministry and sources at the airport did not confirm why the Moroccans had been held, but diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco are often strained over their regional influence and cooperation. Libya in particular has become a regional concern since Islamic State militants gained ground there and called for foreign recruits, especially from North Africa. |
Russia says Norway border post closed to migrants for 'security' Posted: 24 Jan 2016 05:17 AM PST Russia on Sunday confirmed it had shut for "security reasons" an Arctic border post with Norway to migrants being controversially returned from the Nordic country. Norway on Saturday said it was temporarily halting its return of migrants -- mainly from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq -- who had entered from Russia following a request from the authorities there. |
Saudi envoy comments on Iraq's Shi'ite militias draw hostile reactions Posted: 24 Jan 2016 04:09 AM PST Iraqi Shi'ite Muslim lawmakers on Sunday accused the new Saudi ambassador of meddling in domestic affairs after he said the presence of Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias in the fight against Islamic State was exacerbating sectarian tensions in Iraq. Enmity between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims in the Middle East is at its worst in years as regional conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen deepen long-standing rifts. Saudi Arabia, a conservative Sunni kingdom, executed a prominent Shi'ite cleric this month, infuriating Shi'ites around the region and arch foe Iran. |
