Iraq summons Saudi envoy over comments on Iran-backed militias Posted: 24 Jan 2016 11:02 AM PST By Maher Chmaytelli and Stephen Kalin BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq summoned the new Saudi ambassador on Sunday after he suggested Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias were exacerbating sectarian tensions and should leave the fight against Islamic State to the Iraqi army and official security forces. Baghdad's move underscores the depth of enmity between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslim powers as sectarian conflicts rage in Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Riyadh only reopened its embassy in Baghdad last month, shut down since the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. |

U.S.-led coalition conducts 23 strikes on Islamic State militants Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:43 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A coalition led by the United States conducted 16 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq on Saturday, and also targeted the jihadist group seven times in Syria, according to a U.S. military statement. The Iraq strikes were concentrated near Ramadi, where six bombardments destroyed staging areas, a vehicle and a fuel tank while hitting two tactical units and denying Islamic State access to terrain, the Coalition Joint Task Force statement released on Sunday said. ... |
Algeria summons Morocco envoy, detains Moroccans headed to Libya -sources Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:17 AM PST Algerian authorities have detained over 200 Moroccans at Algiers airport and summoned the Moroccan envoy to explain an "unusual" increase in the number of Moroccans apparently trying to cross into Libya, airport and government officials said on Sunday. The foreign ministry and sources at the airport did not confirm why the Moroccans had been held, but diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco are often strained over their regional influence and cooperation. Libya in particular has become a regional concern since Islamic State militants gained ground there and called for foreign recruits, especially from North Africa. |

Saudi envoy comments on Iraq's Shi'ite militias draw hostile reactions Posted: 24 Jan 2016 04:09 AM PST Iraqi Shi'ite Muslim lawmakers on Sunday accused the new Saudi ambassador of meddling in domestic affairs after he said the presence of Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias in the fight against Islamic State was exacerbating sectarian tensions in Iraq. Enmity between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims in the Middle East is at its worst in years as regional conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Yemen deepen long-standing rifts. Saudi Arabia, a conservative Sunni kingdom, executed a prominent Shi'ite cleric this month, infuriating Shi'ites around the region and arch foe Iran. |
