EXCLUSIVE-Boeing software re-activated before Ethiopian crash -sources Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:17 AM PDT SEATTLE/PARIS, April 3 (Reuters) - Boeing anti-stall software on a doomed Ethiopian Airlines jet re-engaged and pushed the jet downwards after the pilots initially turned it off due to suspect data from an airflow sensor, two people familiar with the matter said. It was not immediately clear whether the crew chose to re-deploy the MCAS system, which was designed to push the nose of the 737 MAX down to prevent one kind of emergency but which is suspected of exacerbating a scenario linked to two crashes. |
Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:13 AM PDT Nancy Pelosi has called on Joe Biden to join the "straight arm club" after multiple women expressed discomfort over their physical interactions with the former vice president. The Democratic House speaker was answering questions about whether accusations from Lucy Flores and Amy Lappos about seemingly inappropriate contact with Mr Biden disqualified him from running in the 2020 presidential elections, as he has been considering in recent months. Neither women claimed their exchanges with Mr Biden reached the level of assault or sexual misconduct. Ms Pelosi said she did not believe the controversy disqualified Mr Biden from potentially joining the race, though she encouraged him to acknowledge that "people's space is important to them.""I'm a member of the straight-arm club," she said, fully extending her arm as if to shake a hand from a small distance. "I just pretend you have a cold, and I have a cold."Mr Biden "has to understand that in the world we're in now, people's space is important to them, and what's important is how they receive it, and not necessarily how you intended it," Ms Pelosi said on Tuesday during an interview with Politico that was live-streamed. The House speaker added that her grandchildren "love Joe Biden," who she said she knows well and described as "a very affectionate person." Both Ms Flores and Ms Lappos have accused Mr Biden of inappropriately touching them in public in seemingly awkward exchanges with the former vice president, who has been occasionally referred to as "Creepy Uncle Joe" by critics who believe he has been too hands-on with women along the campaign trail. "I think it's important for the vice president and others to understand, it isn't what you intended, it's how it was received," Ms Pelosi said on Tuesday. She added, "It's how it is received, so to say, 'I'm sorry that you were offended' is not an apology. 'I'm sorry I invaded your space,' but not 'I'm sorry you were offended.'" |

2 major cases add up to big doubts about Chicago prosecutor Posted: 01 Apr 2019 10:37 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx was elected in 2016 mainly because of anger that the prosecutor she ousted had waited a year to charge a Chicago police officer in the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald. Then Foxx, who is a survivor of sexual assault as a child, grabbed national attention by charging singer R. Kelly with aggravated sexual abuse. |
Erdogan's Golden Chance to Make Up to Markets May Not Last Long Posted: 02 Apr 2019 03:00 AM PDT Monday's gains in the lira suggest some investors are betting he'll begin to adopt a more tempered approach after a setback at the polls, pointing to his reference to an "important reform agenda" on Sunday. Turkey's biggest cities turned against him for the first time since 1994 after his growth-at-all-cost leaning precipitated a run on the currency last year, dragging the economy into its first recession since the global financial crisis. |

Pittsburgh City Council Approves Assault-Weapon Restrictions in Response to Synagogue Shooting Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:37 AM PDT The Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday passed a series of gun-control bills that were introduced in response to the mass shooting that claimed eleven lives at the city's Tree of Life Synagogue last year. The legislative package, which passed 6–3, prohibits the public use of assault-style rifles like the AR-15 used in the synagogue shooting, bans the use of armor-piercing ammunition and high-capacity magazines, and allows the authorities to temporarily seize the firearms of anyone determined to be dangerous."We're happy to take a stand," Councilman Corey O'Connor, who led the legislative effort, said after the bills passed. "It's going to be a difficult battle, but we are willing to fight it. People are starting to change their minds and be more open to some sort of gun control."Opponents of the legislation booed lawmakers after it was passed, and at least one man vowed to move to an area where his right to self-defense would not be infringed."My guns are not hurting anybody. I have no intent of hurting anybody," lifelong Pittsburgh resident Dennis Jordan told the Council. "I am not going to be allowed to own my guns because of this ordinance. I am ready to move out of this place. You just want to control people. You want to take away my right to protect people."> City council will shortly be voting on gun legislation this morning. We spoke to two members of the public with opposing views. Stay with @KDKA for updates. pic.twitter.com/L7nA6IRfwM> > -- Amy Wadas (@AmyWadas) April 2, 2019The legislation, which initially prohibited the possession of assault-style rifles outright, was weakened in order to make it more likely to survive the legal challenge sure to be brought by pro-Second Amendment activists. Those activists believe Pennsylvania state law, which prohibits municipalities from regulating the possession of guns and ammunition, is on their side."All of it's illegal. Pennsylvania preemption law says that no municipality, period, may in any manner regulate. And that's at the heart of what they're doing," Kim Stolfer, president and co-founder of Firearms Owners Against Crime, told CBS.The legislation was initially introduced days after a lone gunman opened fire inside the Tree of Life Synagogue on October 27, killing eleven and injuring seven in the deadliest attack on Jews in American history.Allegheny County district attorney Stephen Zappala Jr., a Democrat, told City Council members in January that, while he understood their motivation, the proposed legislation was unconstitutional. |

Singapore carrier grounds two Boeing jets over engine problem Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:16 AM PDT Singapore Airlines said Tuesday it had grounded two of its Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft after discovering an engine defect during inspections, the latest problem for the US planemaker. The city-state's flag carrier was the launch customer for the model -- which has a maximum capacity of 330 passengers -- and started operating them last year. Boeing's 737 MAX planes were grounded globally last month following the second of two deadly crashes to occur in less than five months. |

Three importers cut Iran oil shipments to zero: U.S. envoy Posted: 02 Apr 2019 10:08 PM PDT The United States reimposed sanctions on Iran after President Donald Trump last May withdrew the country from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and several world powers, accusing it of supporting terrorism and conflicts in Syria and Yemen. While the United States has set a goal of completely halting Iran's oil exports, it granted temporary import waivers to China, India, Greece, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, Turkey and South Korea to ensure low oil prices and no disruption to the global oil market. The Trump administration is currently in consultations with the importers ahead of a May 2 deadline when the waivers expire. |
Nokia’s new X71 has a stellar design that rivals that of the Galaxy S10 Posted: 02 Apr 2019 02:17 PM PDT HMD Global's Nokia 9 PureView might be the best Nokia phone you can buy right now, but the device isn't necessarily perfect. The phone features a "classic" Nokia handset design, which means it has thicker bezels than most consumers want, and relies on last year's top Snapdragon processor to power its penta-lens camera. One of its biggest rivals is Samsung's Galaxy S10 -- a phone that features a hole-punch display design, as well as the latest Qualcomm processor. The S10, however, only features a triple-lens shooter on the back. But HMD just released a Nokia phone that looks a lot like the Galaxy S10 in terms of overall design. Sadly, the Nokia X71 is only selling in Taiwan for the time being, and it's not a flagship handset. The Nokia X71 features a 6.39-inch Full HD LCD with 19.3:9 aspect ratio, with the punch-hole camera placed on the top-left corner, similar to other punch-hole LCD phones from the competition, like Huawei and Samsung. The phone looks a lot like the Galaxy S10, but it's not quite a replica of Samsung's flagship. For starters, the front camera is placed in the opposite corner. Secondly, the display features a thicker bottom bezel, and the fingerprint sensor is placed on the back under the triple-lens camera, rather than under the screen.Other specs include a Snapdragon 660 processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, microSD support, 48-megapixel main rear camera, 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 5-megapixel depth-of-field lens, 16-megapixel selfie cam, 3,500 mAh battery with 18W fast-charging support, USB-C connectivity, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Android 9.0 Pie.It's unclear whether the Nokia X71 will ever be launched in Europe or the US, but the phone will cost NT$11,900, or around $385, in Taiwan when it goes on sale next week. |

Trump repeatedly fails in attempt to say ‘origins’ then claims noise from wind farms causes cancer Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:27 AM PDT Donald Trump repeatedly struggled to say the word "origin" during a White House meeting with the Nato secretary general in which the US president made a number of false claims. Taking questions from reporters while sat alongside Jens Stoltenberg in the Oval Office, Mr Trump railed against Democrats in congress providing oversight of him and called for an investigation into why the special counsel's probe into Trump campaign ties with Russia was launched."I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the investigation, the beginnings of that investigation," Mr Trump said. "You look at the origin of the investigation, where it started, how it started, who started it, whether it's McCabe or Comey or a lot of them. "Where does it go, how high up in the White House did it go? You will all get Pulitzer Prizes, ok? You'll all get Pulitzer Prizes. You should have looked at it a long time ago and that's the only thing that's disappointing to me about the Mueller report. "The Mueller report I wished covered the oranges, how it started, the beginnings of the investigation, how it started. It didn't cover that, and for some reason none of that was discussed." Special counsel Robert Mueller's report, which has yet to be made public, cleared the president of conspiracy of Russia, but did not rule on whether he obstructed justice. Mr Trump wrongly claimed it cleared him of both. The president has repeatedly claimed he was the subject of an illegal "witch hunt" invented by senior government officials and even former president Barack Obama. He has never provided evidence to back his claims. In a freewheeling press conference, Mr Trump also railed against immigration across the southern border, said he had "to get rid of judges" who deal with asylum cases, and falsely claimed only two per cent of immigrants detained by border agents under so-called "catch and release" attend court for their application hearing. The true figure is at least 60 per cent, according to Justice Department figures.Mr Trump also threatened to close "large sections" of the border – admitting it would impact trade but that security was "more important" – and said, without providing evidence, that Central American countries "arrange these caravans" the president has repeatedly cited as evidence of an emergency situation at the border.Asked about Germany's contributions to Nato, Mr Trump accused Berlin of "not paying their fair share" before wrongly claiming his father was born in Germany. "My father is German, right? Was German, and born in a very wonderful place in Germany, so I have a great feeling for Germany," he said. His father was in fact born in the US. Later on Tuesday evening, at a National Republican Congressional Committee event, Mr Trump ventured into new territory when he untruthfully claimed wind turbines cause cancer. "If you have a windmill anywhere near your house, congratulations, your house just went down 75 per cent in value," Mr Trump told his audience. "And they say the noise causes cancer. You tell me that one, OK? Rerrrr rerrrr!"There is no evidence the noise from windmills or turbines causes cancer. He also revealed he had called authoritarian Chinese president Xi Jinping a "king" during a visit to Beijing in 2017. "He said, 'But I am not king, I am president'. I said, 'No, you're president for life, and therefore you're king'," Mr Trump said to laughter. "He said, huh. He liked that. I get along with him great." |
Chicago police call for state's attorney to resign in Smollett controversy Posted: 01 Apr 2019 06:20 PM PDT About 300 people, including off-duty Chicago police officers, gathered at the building where Foxx's office is located in downtown Chicago, wearing "Foxx Must Go!" buttons and carrying signs reading "Resign now" and "Who let the Foxx in the henhouse." Smollett, who is black and gay, ignited a firestorm on social media by telling police on Jan. 29 that two apparent supporters of President Donald Trump struck him, put a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs on a Chicago street. The 36-year-old actor, best known for his role on the Twentieth Century Fox Television hip-hop drama "Empire," was charged in February with staging the incident himself and filing a false police report. In a stunning move on Tuesday, prosecutors dropped all charges against Smollett, angering police who had not been told of the decision ahead of time. |
Shell to Leave Oil Lobby Group Over Climate Policy Concerns Posted: 02 Apr 2019 04:48 AM PDT The findings were issued in a first-of-its-kind report on whether the company's association with lobbying groups is undermining its work on climate change. The report is likely to reverberate across the industry, with most of Shell's peers also members of the same groups and already facing enormous pressure from shareholders to line up their business models with the Paris climate accord. Shell will leave the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers association next year because of its climate-change policy stance. |

Ukraine's Tymoshenko says won't challenge vote results Posted: 02 Apr 2019 06:02 AM PDT Ukraine's former prime minister Yuliya Tymoshenko on Tuesday denounced the results of a "rigged" vote that eliminated her from the presidential race, but said she would not urge street protests. Tymoshenko, an internationally recognised political figure, came third in Sunday's first-round vote in what was also her third bid for the presidency. With 99 percent of the ballots counted, Zelensky was ahead with more than 30 percent of the first-round vote, nearly twice that of Poroshenko, on almost 16 percent. |

The site has taken a tough stance on Duterte's signature narcotics crackdown that has killed thousands of alleged drug dealers and users, but also cast a critical eye on his leadership and controversial public statements. Ressa was arrested in her Manila office in mid-February on an online libel charge and was released on bail the next day. |
Pixel 4 leak suggests Google is already testing next-gen flagship prototypes Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:12 AM PDT Google is expected to launch a bunch of Pixel devices this year, including new "Pixel 3 Lite" models that should hit stores at some point in the coming months, as well as the more exciting Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL that are due to be released this fall. We saw a bunch of Pixel 4 leaks and renders in the past few weeks that teased an updated design for the upcoming Google flagships. The phones would pack a Galaxy S10-like hole-punch screen design, which would be a massive improvement over the current Pixel 3 design that's quite boring. Google, meanwhile, isn't afraid to openly discuss the existence of the Pixel 4 over on its Android Open Source Project (AOSP) site, and it's not even bothering to refer to the phone using a codename.A new comment on the AOSP site (via 9to5Google) has the following quote from a Googler:> The plan was to first deploy this on Pixel 3 and make sure that everything actually works. Then move on to Pixel 4 and so on. If I had a Pixel 4 device, I probably wouldn't have bothered with 4.9 in the first place. Here's a screenshot showing the same quote, which mentions the Pixel 4 by name three times:The comment indicates that early Pixel 4 phones are already out in the wild, with some Google developers already having access to prototype versions of the phone. This Googler says doesn't have a Pixel 4 device to test the fix he mentioned, suggesting that some of his colleagues do.The code change doesn't reveal any other details about the Pixel 4. But now that we know Pixel 4 prototypes actually exist, we wouldn't be surprised to see them leak months ahead of the phone's launch, which isn't expected until this coming October. |
Chicago makes history electing Lori Lightfoot as first black woman mayor Posted: 02 Apr 2019 07:42 PM PDT A former federal prosecutor, Lightfoot won 74 percent of the vote with nearly all precincts counted compared with 26 percent for Preckwinkle, a long-time local politician, to become Chicago's 56th mayor. Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:07 AM PDT A talk show host has threatened to "duff [Tucker Carlson] so hard his bowtie would spin around like Daffy Duck's beak" after the Fox News presenter insulted congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and MSNBC's Chris Hayes.Joel Martinez, known professionally as The Kid Mero, hit back at Mr Carlson following a segment mocking a town hall event on Ms Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal policy hosted by Mr Hayes.Mr Carlson called the New York congresswoman a "moron" on his talk show and said Mr Hayes was "what every man would be if feminists ever achieved absolute power".In response, Mr Martinez lambasted the Fox News host, threatening to beat him up if Mr Carlson challenged him and saying Mr Hayes would give him an "openhand face smack" in a "no gloves no rules" fight. He also described Mr Carlson as "a scrubbed potato with a wig on" and said MSNBC host Rachel Maddow would beat him in a fight.Mr Martinez is the co-host of the late-night talk show Desus & Mero on Showtime with comedian Desus Nice. The show has previously featured interviews with Mr Hayes and Ms Ocasio-Cortez, who are both from New York.Mr Carlson took offence at a recent episode of All In with Chris Hayes in which Ms Ocasio-Cortez spoke at length about proposals to limit the effects of climate change. The congresswoman's Green New Deal is a policy proposal which outlines radical changes that would need to be made to transition the US to an economy which uses 100% renewable, zero-emission energy sources. The Fox News host tore into Mr Hayes for hosting the programme. He said: "Chris Hayes is what every man would be if feminists ever achieved absolute power in this country: apologetic, bespectacled and deeply deeply concerned about global warming and the patriarchal systems that cause it.""He looks like Ellen," Mr Carlson added, referring to comedian Ellen DeGeneres. He then went on to attack Ms Ocasio-Cortez for saying that America should aim to be "a moral society"."'Wait a second,' you may be wondering, 'How does a member of Congress who hasn't yet turned 30, someone who's never even raised children, get the right to lecture me about morality?'" he said."So it's official: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a moron and nasty and more self-righteous than any televangelist who ever preached a sermon on cable access," he added.Ms Ocasio-Cortez responded to Mr Carlson's attack by tweeting "You mad bro?" with a link to an article about his insults. The Fox News presenter has been a long-standing critic of the first-term congresswoman and previously called her "dumb and totally ignorant of everything" on his show. |
