Kurds unite to oust Iraq jihadists, rescue stranded civilians

Iraqi Yazidi children who fled the violence in the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar with their family, stand at a school where they are taking shelter in the Kurdish city of Dohuk in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, on August 5, 2014Kurds from Iraq, Syria and Turkey joined forces in north Iraq Wednesday to try to reclaim areas lost to jihadists and rescue thousands of civilians stranded in mountains without food or water. The fate of the civilians, many of them from the Yazidi minority who fled to the Sinjar mountains after an attack by the Islamic State (IS) group at the weekend, has sparked international concern. In raids west and north of their main Iraqi hub of Mosul in recent days, IS fighters took over the towns of Sinjar and Zumar, further secured the border with Syria by seizing Rabia, and bagged several oilfields in the process. As part of the fightback, an Iraqi government airstrike smashed a hole in a Mosul building the jihadists had been using as a sharia (Islamic law) court, military spokesman Qassem Atta said.

Kurdish "peshmerga" troops stand guard during an intensive security deployment on the outskirts of Sinjar, west of MosulBy Ahmed Rasheed and Isra' al-Rubei'i BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Kurdish forces attacked Islamic State fighters near the Kurdish regional capital of Arbil in northern Iraq on Wednesday in a change of tactics supported by the Iraqi central government to try to break the Islamists' momentum. The attack 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Arbil came after the Sunni militants inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Kurds on Sunday with a rapid advance through three towns, prompting Iraq's prime minister to order his air force for the first time to back the Kurdish forces. Now we are clashing with the Islamic State in Makhmur," said Jabbar Yawar, secretary-general of the ministry in charge of the Kurdish peshmerga fighters. The location of the clashes puts the Islamic State fighters closer than they have ever been to the Kurdish semi-autonomous region since they swept through northern Iraq almost unopposed in June.

Five Best Wednesday ColumnsZalmay Khalilzad in The Washington Post on why the United State's needs to act swiftly in Iraq. Khalilzad writes that because of the Islamic State's recent advances, it is important for the U.S. to supply the Kurds and the Iraqis with increased aid. The United States should move immediately to work with local forces opposed to the Islamic State — not just the government in Baghdad but also Sunni Arabs and the Kurds. Washington is open to the idea, according to testimony by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Brett McGurk before the Senate last month; In particular, the United States can play a key role in expediting the provision of ammunition and training, operational advice and coordination among these local forces and some of Iraq's concerned neighbors." Pennsylvania museum says finds 6,500-year-old skeleton in its cellar

Undated handout photo of Dr. Monge and Dr. Hafford looking at a 6,500-year-old human skeleton, discovered in the basement of the Penn Museum in PhiladelphiaBy Daniel Kelley PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A Philadelphia archaeology museum said on Tuesday its researchers have discovered an extremely rare 6,500-year-old human skeleton in its own basement, where it had been in storage for 85 years. The Penn Museum, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania, said it had lost track of all documentation for the skeleton which dates to roughly 4500 BC. But the paperwork turned up this summer, as part of a project to digitize old records from a 1922-1934 joint expedition by the British Museum and the Penn Museum to modern-day Iraq. Researchers were able to determine that the skeleton was unearthed around 1930 as part of an excavation into the Royal Cemetery of Ur led by Sir Leonard Woolley. A researcher on the digitization project, William Hafford, mentioned the records to Janet Monge, the museum' chief curator.

From Syria to Ukraine, social media opens up warfare

A Free Syrian Army fighter sits on a chair as he uses his mobile phone in Ashrafieh, AleppoBy Peter Apps WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In 2013, Eliot Higgins used videos posted online from Syria to track weapons and pinpoint a chemical strike in Damascus from a computer in the English Midlands. This year, the British blogger and activist is using the same techniques to investigate the missiles in Ukraine believed to have brought down Flight MH17. As conflict flares in the Middle East and Ukraine, the number of images posted on social media is increasing exponentially, giving observers half a world away unprecedented visibility of events on the ground. Footage and still photographs have helped activists and experts identify what they say are Iranian aircraft in Iraq, foreign arms - including U.S.-made rockets - in Syria and killings from Gaza to Nigeria.

The caution paid off for Saddam's supporters and perhaps Iraq, where tensions between Sunnis and Shi'ites would certainly explode into even more violence if any harm is done to the corpse of a man who still commands the respect of his sect. A leader from Saddam's Albu Nasir tribe and a police official told Reuters that Shi'ite militiamen broke into the grave site, tore down photographs of the former Iraqi leader and then set the area on fire. Our fears proved true," said the tribal leader who asked not to be named."There were four of us that took up this mission.
