World's priciest whisky bought by Chinese millionaire revealed to be fake

Posted: 02 Nov 2017 05:48 AM PDT

World's priciest whisky bought by Chinese millionaire revealed to be fakeWhen Chinese millionaire, Zhang Wei, splashed out  £7,600 on the world's most expensive whisky shot in a Swiss bar, he boasted to his fans that it was the same age as his great, great grandmother would have been – 139 years old. Unfortunately for the martial arts fantasy writer, the headlines generated not only admiration, but suspicion by experts who doubted the authenticity of the spirit's true provenance when they spotted discrepancies in the bottle's cork and label. An analysis from Scottish experts has now confirmed that Mr Zhang was unwittingly duped into buying a fake dram, and the Waldhaus am See hotel in St Moritz has recently flown its manager, Sandro Bernasconi, to China to reimburse him, reported the BBC. Analysis has shown the whisky was not as advertised Credit: David Cheskin/PA Wire The whisky had been poured from an unopened bottle labelled as an 1878 Macallan single malt, and Mr Zhang's shot is believed to have been the largest sum ever paid for a poured dram of Scotch. Had the bottle been genuine, it would have been worth £227,000. When doubts emerged about its provenance, the hotel sent the whisky to specialists in Dunfermline who carried out carbon dating tests that showed it was probably made between 1970 and 1972. Further lab tests revealed it was probably a blended a Scotch and not a single malt. Mr Bernasconi flew to China to break the bad news to Mr Zhang and to pay him back but he said the author was not angry. "He thanked me very much for the hotel's honesty," he told the BBC.

Amanda Knox says she was never allowed to mourn Meredith Kercher

Posted: 02 Nov 2017 02:34 PM PDT

Amanda Knox says she was never allowed to mourn Meredith KercherAmanda Knox has written an essay on the 10th anniversary of Meredith Kercher's death describing how much she misses her "closest friend" but adding that she was never able to mourn properly because of suspicions she was involved in her roommate's death. Kercher was found stabbed to death on 1 November 2007 in the apartment she shared with Miss Knox in Perugia, Italy. Knox and her then boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were found guilty of her murder before their convictions were overturned. In an essay for the Westside Seattle newspaper, she recalls the time she spent with Kercher, sunbathing on the terrace or sipping espresso. "I remember that I loved her accent. I remember the time I wanted to get dressed up and she happily loaned me a pair of her tights, like a big sister. Amanda Knox was finally cleared in 2015 Credit: Reuters "And I remember the last time I saw her, ten years ago today, slinging her purse over her shoulder and waving goodbye to me on her way out to meet up with her British friends." But she says the fond memories are buried beneath recollections of post-mortem photographs, media slurs, wrongful imprisonment and death threats. And she feels she was never allowed to mourn her friend. "There are some people who believe I have no right to mourn Meredith," she writes. "They believe that I had something to do with her murder—I didn't—or that Meredith has been forgotten in the wake of my own struggle for justice—she hasn't." Court clears Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito of murder 01:35 Miss Knox was finally cleared by the Supreme Court in Rome in 2015.She has lived in Seattle ever since, writing for her local paper. Another man, Rudy Guede, was tried in a separate, fast-track trial and found guilty of Kercher's murder in 2008. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Thornton police reported "multiple parties down" and advised people to stay away from the area as dozens of police cruisers and emergency vehicles raced to the scene. The men died at the Colorado store, and the woman died at a hospital. Police spokesman Victor Avila said a man nonchalantly entered the store and fired a handgun into a group of people before fleeing in a car. No one has been arrested.
