Dan Bulli's massive B-52 bomber hit turbulence that shook the plane so violently that he couldn't read the gauges. Senate 'old boy' network is misfiring on Hagel nomination Posted: 13 Jan 2013 02:31 PM PST Conventional wisdom has it that Senate confirmation hearings go smoothly when the Senate is confirming one of its own. That may well prove to be the case for Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts, who is expected to windsurf through his confirmation hearing to replace (former Sen.) Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) of New York as secretary of state. |

It was not clear whether Esawi was the target of the bombing. The Sunni Muslim minister is caught up in a crisis that has triggered protests in Sunni regions and is straining Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's power-sharing government. "A roadside bomb exploded near his convoy. His car was not hit and he is safe, but two guards were wounded," a spokesman for Esawi's office said. ... |

Analysis: Mali - one African war France could not avoid Posted: 13 Jan 2013 08:21 AM PST PARIS (Reuters) - Just as its leaders were defining a new "hands-off" strategy for Africa, France has been thrust onto the front line of one of the continent's riskiest battlefields deep in the desert of Mali. President Francois Hollande's backing of air strikes to halt Islamist rebels advancing on the capital Bamako raises the threat level for eight French hostages held by al Qaeda allies in the Sahara and for the 30,000 French expatriates living in neighboring, mostly Muslim states. It could also trigger an attack on French soil. ... |

Thousands have taken to the streets in Sunni stronghold provinces for three weeks of daily protests, posing the sternest test yet for Maliki's fragile government composed of Shi'ites, Sunnis and ethnic Kurds. ... |
