Anti-Semitic slaying of 85-year-old prompts outcry in France Posted: 27 Mar 2018 12:16 PM PDT PARIS (AP) — Like many who survived Nazi horrors, Mireille Knoll embraced life, eating out and going to the theater despite limited means. Even as age and Parkinson's disease took their toll, she delighted in receiving guests — until one of them allegedly stabbed the 85-year-old to death because she was Jewish. |

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discharged from hospital Posted: 27 Mar 2018 02:47 PM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was released from hospital on Tuesday after suffering from a high fever and a cough, his office said. Netanyahu said on Twitter: "I am on my way home. Sure some rest and hot soup will put things right." An official statement from his office said hospital tests indicated the prime minister was suffering from a mild viral infection of his upper respiratory tract. "The doctors recommended him to rest and undergo medical treatment," his office said in a statement, without giving details. An earlier statement said Netanyahu's personal physician believed the 68-year-old leader had not fully recovered from an illness two weeks ago and therefore decided he should undergo further tests in hospital. Netanyahu fell ill in mid-March and cancelled his public schedule for five consecutive days. "The prime minister did not complete the time required in order to recover from the illness he had two weeks ago and therefore the symptoms have gotten worse," the spokesman said in a text message. Netanyahu's illness has come at a stressful time for the four-times right-wing prime minister, who is under police investigation for corruption in three different cases. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing. On Monday Netanyahu, his wife and son were questioned by police as part of an investigation into one of the corruption cases in which the prime minister is a suspect. In the two other cases police have already recommended that Netanyahu be charged with bribery. The final decision about whether to prosecute rests with the Israeli attorney general. That decision could be months away. Profile | Benjamin Netanyahu So far, partners in Netanyahu's governing coalition have stood by him, saying they are awaiting the attorney general's next moves. Political analysts say such support may erode if the investigations against Netanyahu intensify. Surveys have shown that about half of Israelis believe the police over Netanyahu and think he should step down, while a third think he should remain in office. Support for Netanyahu's Likud party remains strong in opinion polls. |

Last week, US military officials and lawmakers highlighted hypersonic missiles as a particular area of concern. "Right now, we're helpless," Republican Senator James Inhofe, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was quoted by The Hill as saying in advocating for more funding for hypersonic missiles. |
Japanese Emperor, Empress visit Okinawa to honor war dead on what may be last visit Posted: 27 Mar 2018 04:10 AM PDT Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife bowed their heads and offered prayers on Tuesday for victims of World War Two in Okinawa, on what could be their last visit to pay respects on an island where 30 percent of the population died in the war. The emperor, who has spent much of his nearly three decades on the throne seeking to soothe the wounds of war, will step down on April 30 next year in the first abdication by a Japanese emperor in nearly two centuries. The three-day visit to the southwestern chain of islands is the 11th by the imperial couple and their first since 2014, when they came ahead of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Okinawa. |

America's oldest gun maker files for bankruptcy as sales decline nationwide Posted: 26 Mar 2018 10:47 AM PDT America's oldest gun maker has filed for bankruptcy as firearms sales slump across the country following Donald Trump's election. Founded more than 200 years ago, Remington Outdoor said it was turning over control to creditors after a huge decline in sales in the last year. In 2016, the FBI processed a record number of background checks - used as a barometer for gun sales - but the rate has fallen since President Trump's election. The slowdown has been attributed to Mr Trump's opposition to gun control laws, which stopped the panic-buying rush that the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency had prompted. In the first nine months of his presidency Remington's sales were down 27.5 per cent. Remington Outdoor Company filed for bankruptcy protection Credit: AP The debate over gun control has intensified in the wake of the Florida Parkland high school shooting, one of the worst in the country's history, which left 17 dead. A recent poll showed that 69 per cent of Americans, including half of Republicans, now favour stronger gun control laws. Hundreds of thousands of protesters took part in organised marches across the US on Saturday in what anti-gun campaigners hoped would be a pivotal moment in their bid to end the country's gun violence. Remington Outdoor Company has filed for bankruptcy protection after months of financial problems Credit: AP A number of the US's biggest retailers raised the age limit for certain firearms purchases to 21 or stopped stocking semi-automatic weapons all together in response to the Florida Parkland shooting. Remington, which was founded in 1818 and is best known for its rifles and shotguns, filed for bankruptcy in order to cut a deal with its creditors. The company has faced lawsuits after its Bushmaster, an AR-15-style rifle, was used in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting that killed 26 people, including 20 six and seven-year-olds. Remington was cleared of any wrongdoing but has continued to be blighted by financial difficulties because of declining sales. |

Two charged with anti-Semitic murder of elderly French Jewish woman Posted: 27 Mar 2018 09:41 AM PDT French prosecutors have charged two people, one of them a neighbour, with the murder of an 85-year-old Jewish woman who was stabbed and whose body was then set alight in a crime being treated as anti-Semitic. Mireille Knoll, who escaped the mass roundup and deportation of Jews from Paris during World War II, was found dead in her bed in her small apartment in eastern Paris on Friday by firefighters called to extinguish a blaze. Two men are in custody on charges of murder as well as aggravated robbery and damaging property in a case investigators are treating as anti-Semitic. |
