Russian warning shots fired at Turkish ship. Will cooler heads prevail? Posted: 13 Dec 2015 01:45 PM PST A Russian warship anchored in the Aegean Sea fired warning shots at a Turkish fishing vessel on Sunday, after, it claimed, sending several warnings that did not deter the ship from coming within 600 meters of the Smetlivy destroyer. Recommended: Sochi, Soviets, and tsars: How much do you know about Russia? The incident comes on the heels of another complaint earlier this month, when Turkey scolded the Russian ambassador after photos surfaced of what appeared to be a Russian serviceman posing with a rocket launcher as his vessel sailed through Turkish waters. |
Trump to Cruz: Nobody Likes You Posted: 13 Dec 2015 11:21 AM PST When the school bully starts glowering in your direction, the worst thing you can do is hold up your hands and say, "Please don't hit me." It's a lesson most of us learn in the schoolyard, but one that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz seems to have forgotten. Cruz, who is making a strong run in Republican presidential primary polling, has done everything he can to put off an inevitable showdown with frontrunner Donald Trump. To avoid them, Cruz has refused to seriously confront some of the billionaire's most outrageous statements, and he has repeatedly said how glad he is to have Trump in the race. |

Donald Trump: The problem with Ted Cruz is he’s ‘a bit of a maniac’ Posted: 13 Dec 2015 10:38 AM PST Donald Trump says Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is "a bit of a maniac" who doesn't have the "right temperament" to be president. |
Death toll in northwest Pakistan blast rises to 24 Posted: 13 Dec 2015 08:46 AM PST By Javed Hussain PARACHINAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A blast killed 24 people and injured 70 in the northwestern Pakistani city of Parachinar on Sunday, officials said, and a banned Sunni Islamist group claimed responsibility for the attack. "This is revenge for the killing of Muslims by the Syrian president and Iran," said Ali bin Sufyan, spokesman for Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), an Islamist group whose sectarian ideology is closely aligned with Islamic State. Earlier this week Reuters reported that a Shi'ite unit of Pakistani fighters known as the Zeinabiyoun were joining the war against Islamic State in Syria. |
Libyan armed groups deployed in divided nation Posted: 13 Dec 2015 07:59 AM PST Armed factions, including the jihadist Islamic State group, are deployed across divided Libya, gripped by chaos and insecurity since the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi. A diverse and well-armed alliance of militias, Fajr Libya seized the capital Tripoli in August 2014 after fierce battles with rival militiamen from the western town of Zintan. The alliance includes moderate Islamists as well as members of the Berber minority, and Fajr Libya also has a presence in the south, including in its main city Sabha. |
Why Offering U.S. Apache Attack Helicopters to Iraq Is a Big Deal Posted: 13 Dec 2015 03:15 AM PST At a time when President Obama has come under persistent criticism for having an inadequate strategy to win the war against Islamic extremists, the Defense Department is upping the ante in Iraq by turning loose a fleet of Apache attack helicopters. "The United States is prepared to assist the Iraqi army with additional unique capabilities to help them finish the job, including attack helicopters and accompanying advisers if circumstances dictate and if requested by Prime Minister Abadi," Defense Secretary Ash Carter said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing last week. The proposal comes as Iraqi government forces have struggled to retake the city of Ramadi from ISIS, which still controls large chunks of territory through the country. |

Christian female fighters take on IS in Syria Posted: 12 Dec 2015 07:43 PM PST Babylonia has no regrets about leaving behind her two children and her job as a hairdresser to join a Christian female militia battling against the Islamic State group in Syria. The fierce-looking 36-year-old in fatigues from the Syriac Christian minority in the northeast believes she is making the future safe for her children. Babylonia belongs to a small, recently created battalion of Syriac Christian women in Hasakeh province who are fighting IS. |
Divers retrieve more items in search for California shooting clues Posted: 12 Dec 2015 05:17 PM PST FBI divers picked through the bottom of a San Bernardino lake on Saturday for a third day, seeking evidence related to a married couple who massacred 14 people at a holiday party, in what the bureau has called an act of terror inspired by Islamic State. Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in an email divers retrieved objects from Seccombe Lake, as they did the previous day. The San Bernardino lake, nestled in a public park, about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of the site of the shooting, is believed to be littered with junk and debris. |
