Kerry looks for regional coalition to take on the Islamic State

Posted: 29 Aug 2014 04:02 PM PDT

President Obama's assignment to Secretary of State John Kerry to build a coalition of countries willing to join the United States in taking on the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq and Syria will be no cake walk. If anything is lightening Mr. Kerry's burden, it's the shockwaves of the Islamic State's stunning sweep to control of parts of northern Iraq that have reverberated through the region and begun to convince Sunni Arab governments in the region that the spreading organization poses a threat to them. "Kerry's is not an easy assignment by any means, but it's been made easier by the conquests [the group] has made and what those conquests could mean for the region if allowed not just to hold, but to grow," says Wayne White, a former State Department official and now an adjunct scholar with the Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington. "For those reasons I think we'll see some Sunni Arab countries sign up willingly."

Britain raises terror threat level on Iraq, Syria fears

An image grab taken from a propaganda video released on March 17, 2014 by the Islamic State (IS)'s al-Furqan Media allegedly shows the group's fighters driving through the northern Syrian City of HomsBritain raised its terror threat risk level to "severe" on Friday, meaning an attack is thought to be "highly likely", due to fears over the situation in Iraq and Syria. The move comes after the killing of US journalist James Foley, apparently by a man speaking with an English accent who belonged to the jihadist group Islamic State. While there was no intelligence to suggest that an attack on Britain is imminent, Prime Minister David Cameron said there was "no doubt in my mind" that IS had its sights set on targets in Europe. "What we are facing in Iraq now with ISIL (IS) is a greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before," he told a press conference just after the threat level was raised.

Despite the move, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Washington had no plans to follow suit, but US national security officials had been in close contact with London on the issue. US President Barack Obama has admitted that he has no immediate strategy to tackle advancing IS jihadists.

Obama faces a tough sell in Congress for Islamic State strategy

U.S. President Obama answers questions ahead of national security council meeting at the White House in WashingtonPresident Barack Obama has pledged to consult Congress about any expanded military action against Islamic State militants operating in Iraq and Syria, but support from the divided legislature is unlikely to come quickly - if at all. Republicans are generally reluctant to vote for Obama's policy initiatives. If Congress were to be asked to approve extended military action or funding, it would probably be at a politically sensitive time just weeks before the Nov. 4 congressional elections in which Republicans hope to gain seats.

By Michael Holden LONDON (Reuters) - Britain raised its terrorism alert on Friday to the second-highest level with Prime Minister David Cameron saying the Islamic State (IS) group operating in Syria and Iraq posed the country's greatest ever security risk. "What we're facing in Iraq now with ISIL (IS) is a greater and deeper threat to our security than we have known before," said Cameron, adding he was "absolutely satisfied that ISIL ... would make specific threats to the UK". It is the first time since mid-2011 that Britain has been placed on this grade of alert by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Center (JTAC), the independent body responsible for setting the national threat level. The national threat level was first published in 2006, just over a year after four British Islamists carried out suicide bombings on London's transport network killing 52 people.

Cameron on ISIS: Tougher Talk But Still No StrategyThe contrast between U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron's speech Friday morning about the threat posed by the terror group ISIS and remarks delivered just one day earlier by President Obama was stark. He denounced the "poisonous ideology" of the Islamist extremist group currently occupying parts of Syria and Iraq and said ISIS must not be allowed to expand its reach lest the world face "a terrorist state on the shores of the Mediterranean." Obama's problem was that he came right out and said it. "We don't have a strategy yet," said Obama, adding that he wanted to lower expectations of any immediate military response to ISIS.
