Porsche pummeled, Corvettes crushed as Philippines' Duterte shows he's tough on tax-dodging Posted: 06 Feb 2018 05:13 AM PST Bulldozers and backhoes pounded more than two dozen seized luxury cars in the Philippines on Tuesday, including Porsches, Mercedes, Jaguars and Corvettes, in a dramatic demolition showcasing the no-nonsense leader's crackdown on crime and corruption. President Rodrigo Duterte watched as the second-hand vehicles, some valued as high as $115,000, were reduced to piles of scrap in a little over three minutes. "Give it to the buyer of steel," Duterte said, recalling his instruction to officials. |

U.S. jurors' identities in 'El Chapo' drug trial to remain secret Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:39 AM PST A U.S. judge in Brooklyn has ruled that the identities of jurors expected to decide the fate of accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman at a trial this year will be kept secret. In a decision on Monday, U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan said jurors' names, addresses and places of employment will be shielded from Guzman, his lawyers, prosecutors and the press. Guzman's lawyer had argued that an anonymous jury would undermine the presumption that his client was innocent, create an "extremely unfair" impression that he was dangerous, and impair his ability to question prospective jurors. |

China's COMAC to deliver first plane in 2021 Posted: 06 Feb 2018 02:20 AM PST China's state-owned plane-maker said Tuesday it expects to deliver its first home-grown passenger jet to a customer in 2021 as the world's second largest economy seeks to challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus. The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) plans to first target the Chinese market, before moving on to Southeast Asia and Africa, said Lu Zheng, deputy general manager of sales and marketing. The C919, a COMAC-built 168-seater passenger plane, will likely be cheaper than equivalent models by its closest competitors, Lu told reporters on the sidelines of the Singapore Airshow. |

Apple supplier Skyworks jumps after better-than-feared forecast Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:19 AM PST Skyworks' March-quarter revenue forecast of $910 million at the mid-point and a profit outlook of $1.60 per share on that basis missed Wall Street estimates of revenue of $921 million and profit of $1.61 per share, per Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. "While the Apple weakness is impacting everyone in the supply chain, Skyworks is experiencing less of a downturn than most as it expands its broad markets business and captures content in other handset providers," Northland Capital Markets analyst Tom Sepenzis said in a client note. |

Stalker who killed ex-girlfriend when she ended their relationship is jailed for life Posted: 06 Feb 2018 11:38 AM PST A warehouse worker who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death after she ended their relationship had been reported to the police four years earlier for stalking a previous partner, it can be revealed. Joshua Stimpson brutally killed 23-year-old Molly McLaren in a shopping centre car park in Kent after she reported him to the police for posting derogatory remarks about her online. During his trial it emerged that he had stalked two ex-girlfriends and had been reported to the police before about his behaviour. Miss McLaren's devastated family said more needed to be done to raise awareness of the dangers of "digital stalking" to prevent similar tragedies happening in the future. In a statement the family said: "We feel there needs to be more awareness over the dangers of stalking and the need for people to report any concerns that they may have to the police. "The verdict has brought us a small measure of comfort. But it seems nothing will take away the pain or allow us to come to terms with our Molly being taken from us. We are serving a lifetime of pain, anguish and loss." Molly McLaren was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in June last year Credit: PA The pair met on the dating app, Tinder, and dated for seven months before Miss McLaren, a student at the University of Kent, ended their relationship. In the two weeks that followed, Stimpson stalked her and posted derogatory messages on Facebook falsely claiming she had been taking cocaine, warning there was "more to come". Joshua Stimpson was arrested at the scene Credit: PA She reported the posts to Facebook but nothing happened, so she went with her mother Joanna to North Kent Police Station. A police officer called Stimpson in their presence, put him on speakerphone and warned him to stop or face prosecution. The 26-year-old was spoken to by police for a second time on June 27 last year, just two days before her death. The couple had met on the Tinder dating app Credit: PA Alexandra Dale, who dated him in 2013, had also reported his behaviour towards her to police. Kent Police reported itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, now known as the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), after Miss McLaren's death. A spokesman said: "Following careful assessment it was determined that this matter could be investigated by Kent Police's professional standards department." The knife used to murder Molly McLaren Credit: PA The force said the inquiry would be finalised once criminal proceedings were concluded. He claimed to have no memory of the attack and his barristers said psychiatric assessments showed he had a borderline personality disorder. Before standing trial, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility but denied murder. Stimpson showed no emotion as Judge Adele Williams jailed him for a minimum of 26 years and said he may never be released. She said: "This was a cruel, calculated and cowardly act. This was an act of wickedness." She described the Ms McLaren as "beautiful and intelligent", adding: "I am sure you are not suffering from a personality disorder. You planned this killing." Ms McLaren's family, sat in a packed public gallery, cried as the sentence was read out. |

US mulling sanctions on Venezuela oil: Tillerson Posted: 04 Feb 2018 06:37 PM PST The United States said Sunday it has not ruled out sanctions on Venezuelan oil as it turns the screw on President Nicolas Maduro, but is wary of hurting the country's people. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is in Argentina during a tour of Latin America to bolster a common front against Venezuela's bid to hold a presidential election that opponents deem illegitimate. The top US diplomat has received support from other governments in the Americas, including on Sunday from his Argentine counterpart Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, but some are cautious about sanctions. |

Rome bans protests ahead of Erdogan talks with pope Posted: 04 Feb 2018 07:13 PM PST Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet Pope Francis on Monday, with a protest ban imposed in central Rome as feelings run high over Turkey's offensive against Kurdish militia inside Syria. For the first such visit by a Turkish leader for 59 years, the Italian authorities have imposed a 24-hour ban on demonstrations which will cover Erdogan's arrival late Sunday to his departure on Monday evening. Turkey on January 20 launched its "Olive Branch" operation against Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia which Ankara sees as a terror group and a threat to Turkish territory. |
