The Hayabusa 2 blasted off in December 2014 for the asteroid Ryugu on a pioneering mission to take samples that scientists hope will help reveal how life began. "Everything has gone as planned," a spokesman for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) told a news conference. |

Abandoned buildings photo series shows beauty in urban decay Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:03 AM PDT An urban explorer has created a powerful photography series in a campaign to show the beauty of abandoned buildings and to urge us to stop tearing them down. Shelley Koon, 54, from Dover, Del., hopes to shatter the illusion that the forgotten sites are dark and drab to reveal their beauty and appeal. Visiting hospitals, asylums, schools and factories in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, she says she can easily spend eight hours at a time exploring and photographing the locations. (Caters News) |

At least 45,000 people have fled the upsurge in fighting in Syria's southwestern Deraa province, heading toward the border with Jordan, the United Nations said. President Bashar al-Assad is aiming to restore control over a strategically vital part of Syria at the borders with Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, building on his military's momentum elsewhere in the seven-year conflict. |

New Cassini findings suggest Saturn moon could support life Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:15 PM PDT Complex organic molecules have been discovered originating from one of Saturn's moons, Enceladus, adding to its potential to support life, researchers said on Wednesday. The Cassini spacecraft first flew close to the ice-covered moon in 2005 as part of a mission to gather data on Saturn that will be analyzed for years to come. A team led by Frank Postberg and Nozair Khawaja of the University of Heidelberg in Germany said they had identified fragments of large organic molecules in ice grains that were ejected from geysers through cracks in the moon's icy exterior. |

U.S. pushes allies to halt Iran oil imports, waivers unlikely Posted: 26 Jun 2018 11:01 AM PDT By Lesley Wroughton and Doina Chiacu WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has told countries to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November and is unlikely to offer any exemptions, a senior State Department official said on Tuesday as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on allies to cut off funding to Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump in May said his administration was withdrawing from the "defective" nuclear deal agreed between Iran and six world powers in July 2015, aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for the lifting of some sanctions, and ordered the reimposition of U.S. sanctions against Tehran that were suspended under the accord. "Yes, we are asking them to go to zero," the official said when asked if the United States was pushing allies, including China and India, to cut oil imports to zero by November. |
