Taiwan cafe chain that irked Beijing vanishes from food platforms Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:59 AM PDT A Taiwan coffee chain that faces pressure in China after serving the island's president has disappeared from Chinese meal-ordering platforms, as Beijing warned it would oppose any businesses that support Taiwanese independence. 85C Bakery Cafe found itself in the crosshairs of China's campaign to isolate Taiwan following a visit to one of its stores in Los Angeles this week by Tsai Ing-wen, the president of self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own. |
China sacks top official over vaccine scandal, firm may de-list Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:51 PM PDT China has sacked a senior provincial official and is probing a former top drug regulator after a safety scandal at vaccine maker Changsheng Biotechnology Co Ltd, which again warned it could be delisted over the scandal. The company was accused in July of falsifying data for a rabies vaccine and manufacturing an ineffective vaccine for babies, sparking widespread consumer anger. While there were no known reports of people being harmed by the vaccines, regulators ordered Changsheng to halt their production and recall the rabies vaccine. |
Chinese plane slides off Manila airport runway in heavy rain Posted: 16 Aug 2018 10:18 PM PDT The aircraft, carrying 157 passengers and eight crew, landed on its second attempt before skidding onto the grass, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines spokesman Eric Apolonio told AFP. Its wings and engines were heavily damaged in the incident, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, which also said the plane circled the airport for an hour before attempting to land. The incident forced a partial shutdown of the Philippines' main airport. |

New Haven overdose: What is K2 weed alternative and how dangerous is the synthetic marijuana? Posted: 16 Aug 2018 01:36 PM PDT Officials have announced a state of emergency in New Haven, Connecticut after at least 76 people overdosed on a synthetic marijuana alternative. The harrowing incident is just the latest in a wave of synthetic marijuana overdoses nationwide, in which hundreds of victims have suffered a myriad of side effects, from bleeding out of their eye sockets to delusional thinking and repeated vomiting. Researchers and police believe the recent string of K2 overdoses may have been caused in part by mixing the drug with opioids, fentanyl, or unknown compounds imported from Russia and China. |

Bayer starts Monsanto integration as stock suffers Posted: 16 Aug 2018 08:12 AM PDT German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant Bayer said Thursday that it would begin integrating seeds and pesticides maker Monsanto after a mega-merger, but its stock price was battered by the US firm's legal woes. Two months after the $63 billion deal -- the biggest ever foreign takeover by a German company -- Bayer completed the sale of a final tranche of crop science businesses worth 5.9 billion euros ($6.7 billion) to rival BASF under concessions imposed by cartel watchdogs. With competition authorities' conditions met, "the integration of Monsanto into the Bayer Group can begin," the Leverkusen-based company said in a statement. |

Marriott was strongly criticised by Chinese authorities in January for listing Taiwan -- along with Tibet and Hong Kong -- as separate countries, all regions which Beijing claims under its authority. |

3M to pay $9.1 million over defective military ear plugs Posted: 17 Aug 2018 08:22 AM PDT The 3M Co. has agreed to pay $9.1 million to settle allegations it knowingly sold defective combat ear plugs to the U.S. military without disclosing defects that limited the effectiveness of the hearing protection devices, the U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday. A settlement frees 3M from the inconvenience of a long investigation and litigation, it said. The 3M payment settles allegations that 3M and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies Inc., knew the ear plugs it sold the military were too short for proper insertion into the users' ears and could loosen and not perform effectively in some people, the Justice Department said. |

Mr Musk made the revelations in an interview with the New York Times that appeared to have been organised primarily to address the controversy around a recent tweet he posted about Tesla. |

US will be 'good ally' to Philippines in disputed sea: official Posted: 16 Aug 2018 08:46 AM PDT The United States will be "a good ally" to the Philippines in responding to territorial conflicts in the South China Sea, a US defence official said Thursday. Randall Schriver, assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, gave the assurance as tensions rise over China's aggressive stance towards its claims to most of the strategic waterway. Speaking to reporters at the US embassy in Manila, Schriver was asked if the United States, which is bound to the Philippines by a mutual defence treaty, would help the country if China invaded the main Filipino-occupied island in the South China Sea. |
Do not call us Mormons or LDS Church, leaders of faith ask Posted: 16 Aug 2018 07:04 PM PDT An online guide accompanying a pronouncement from the church president also asked people to stop referring to followers of the religion as Mormons and not to use the name "LDS" as a shorthand way of describing the faith. "The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," church President Russell Nelson said in a statement. Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have long proclaimed their faith as Christian and fought any association with polygamy, which was practiced by early members of the church before they abandoned it more than 100 years ago. |

The answer, for worried consumers, is this: "Just about anybody can call themselves a financial planner or financial advisor," says Kevin Keller, CEO of the CFP Board, which sets and enforces the standards for certified financial planners. People who call themselves financial advisors can work in a number of industries. |

EU hits back at Italy govt over bridge disaster comments Posted: 16 Aug 2018 06:55 AM PDT The European Union pushed back Thursday against Italy's populist government over the deadly collapse of a bridge in Genoa, saying that it had given Rome billions of euros to fix infrastructure. The riposte came after Italy's hardline eurosceptic Interior Minister Matteo Salvini accused Brussels in the wake of the disaster that killed at least 38 people of prioritising budgets over safety. "It is very human to look for somebody to blame, when terrible accident happens as #Genova. |
