The German leader expressed her "shock" over the attack in the western city of Cologne which left mayoral hopeful Henriette Reker with serious neck wounds. Iraq forces push north in a bid to reshape battlefield Posted: 17 Oct 2015 08:10 AM PDT Iraqi forces pressed Saturday their biggest offensive in months to resume their long-stalled northward advance and disrupt jihadist lines, security officers said. After recapturing parts of Baiji and the huge nearby refinery complex from the Islamic State group, security and allied paramilitary forces thrust further northward up the main highway leading to Mosul. "Iraqi forces are besieging the villages of Msahaq and Zawiyah," about 25 kilometres (16 miles) north of Baiji, a senior officer in Salaheddin operations command said. |

"I would ... like to emphasise that Russian drones are continuing to monitor the situation in Syria's skies," spokesman Igor Konashenkov said, quoted by RIA Novosti news agency. Turkey on Friday downed a drone that the US military suspects to be Russian close to the Syrian border, although Moscow swiftly said its drones were all intact. |

Tehran has armed the Syrian government and, through its backing of Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, has helped Assad combat rebels seeking to end his rule. |
Is the US mission in Afghanistan 'working'? Or is that just spin? Posted: 17 Oct 2015 05:25 AM PDT When President Obama announced this week that he would leave just over 5,000 US troops in Afghanistan when he leaves office – and contrary to his longtime pledge – the White House said the decision reflected a positive assessment of trends in America's longest war. "The fact the president wants to extend the mission is actually an indication it's working," said Josh Earnest, Mr. Obama's spokesman. Was that pure spin, or is the two-part mission in Afghanistan – to train and advise Afghan security forces, and to carry out counterterrorism operations – actually "working"? |

Obama's foreign policy could burden Biden if he runs in 2016 Posted: 17 Oct 2015 03:02 AM PDT By James Oliphant WASHINGTON (Reuters) - When President Barack Obama announced this week that the United States would leave more troops than planned in Afghanistan, his vice president, Joe Biden, stood right at his side. As he calculates all the angles that would influence his candidacy - a decision is reportedly coming within days - Biden has more than the looming obstacle of front-runner Hillary Clinton to consider. As a candidate, he would become the chief defender of a foreign policy that critics say has been incoherent and that gets increasingly low marks in public opinion polls. |
