Turkey's ruling party, opposition positive on coalition Posted: 10 Aug 2015 04:15 PM PDT Turkey's ruling party and the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) voiced cautious optimism Monday about the chances of forming a coalition government, but said more talks were needed to end the country's political impasse. Two months after June legislative elections left the country without a government, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu held their first talks in Ankara, in a meeting that lasted four hours. Culture Minister Omer Celik and CHP deputy chief Haluk Koc, who both attended the meeting, afterwards said efforts were being made to reach "a consensus" and the two sides would meet again later this week to come to a final decision on a possible AKP-CHP coalition. |
Jordanian-US suspect nabbed in NY area extremist ring Posted: 10 Aug 2015 04:08 PM PDT A 20-year-old Jordanian-American who flew overseas in an apparent bid to join the Islamic State extremist group, appeared in court near New York on Monday on terror allegations, prosecutors said. Nader Saadeh, who traveled to Jordan in May in an apparent attempt to join IS fighters in Iraq or Syria, is accused of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to the extremists. Prosecutors say that as early as 2012 Saadeh was in contact with one of the other three accused in the New York area, expressing hatred for America and wanting to form a small army of friends. |
Amid surging violence, Afghan forces stand their ground Posted: 10 Aug 2015 03:21 PM PDT A recent surge in attacks in the Afghan capital is raising concerns that the new boss of a divided Taliban is lashing out to show who is in control – as well as new worries about growing divisions in the government of President Ashraf Ghani. Amid the rubble and chaos is also the silver-lining claim that Afghanistan's US- and NATO-trained security forces are demonstrating a heightened ability to respond to such attacks and mitigate their impact. Iraqi deputy PM resigns, faces corruption investigation Posted: 10 Aug 2015 02:06 PM PDT One of Iraq's three deputy prime ministers resigned on Monday and will be investigated for corruption, officials said, the first tangible result of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's push to tackle corruption in the face of mounting unrest. Emboldened by widespread anti-government protests and a call by a leading Shi'ite Muslim cleric for tougher action, Abadi announced measures over the weekend aimed at reforming a system critics say hands high office to unqualified candidates and encourages corruption. |

It has also rounded up hundreds of suspected militants at home. |
Islamic State claims Iraq car bombs that kill nearly 60 Posted: 10 Aug 2015 01:17 PM PDT At least 58 people were killed and more than 100 wounded on Monday in two blasts in eastern Iraq claimed by Islamic State in a province once considered mostly free of them. In January Iraqi officials declared victory over the insurgents in Diyala province, which borders Iran, after security forces and Shi'ite paramilitaries drove them out of towns and villages there. The violence, which authorities blamed on Kurdish and Marxist radicals, comes as Ankara presses a two-pronged "anti-terror" offensive against Islamic State (IS) jihadists and Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants following a wave of attacks in the country. Monday's attacks raised fresh concerns about security throughout Turkey in an escalating cycle of violence that has left a 2013 ceasefire agreed by the PKK in tatters. |

Posted: 10 Aug 2015 12:29 PM PDT One reason people prefer honesty in government is that it keeps the air conditioners humming. In Iraq, where temperatures this summer have reached 122 degrees F (50 C), widespread protests have erupted over inadequate supplies of electricity. Many protesters claimed corruption to be a worse enemy than the terrorists of Islamic State. |

As U.S. Fighter Jets Arrive in Turkey, Can Air Power Turn the Tide Against ISIS? Posted: 10 Aug 2015 09:51 AM PDT The U.S. has wasted no time taking advantage of a new agreement with Turkey that allows coalition forces to launch attacks against Islamist State forces in Iraq and Syria, though it remains to be seen just how much of a lasting impact the deal will have on the fight against the terror group. The Air Force has ramped up its presence in the country following Ankara's decision last month to allow the U.S. to utilize Incirlik Air Base to launch strikes against the extremist network. |

Iraq Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Unveils Bold Reforms Posted: 10 Aug 2015 07:34 AM PDT "This reform package is ambitious and bold," says Ahmed Ali, an analyst and researcher at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani. "Abadi has to take big decisions to show his decisiveness. Three men currently hold that title, including former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who Abadi and his U.S. backers have repeatedly faulted during his tenure for elevating at times unqualified fellow Shiite Muslims to top positions and fomenting the ethnic tensions that allowed for the Islamic State group to seize control of massive swathes of largely Sunni territory. |

Second-quarter net profit before minority interests was 22.4 million Egyptian pounds ($2.86 million) from 63.6 million in the same quarter last year. The foreign currency shortage in Egypt depleted inventory of some of its key models, the company said, adding that a decline in demand in Egypt early in the second quarter had also had an impact. |
Cautious Khamenei shares burden of approval on Iran deal Posted: 10 Aug 2015 06:25 AM PDT By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin Nouri DUBAI, (Reuters) - For a man with the title of Supreme Leader, Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been noticeably unwilling to claim the credit for a nuclear deal that marks a turning point in the history of the Islamic Republic. In the month since Iran reached an accord with world powers to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, Khamenei has called for public debate and refrained from making decisive statements. At first sight it appears a curiously reticent stance for the man who wields ultimate power in Iran and gave political cover to President Hassan Rouhani in 2013 to pursue talks with world powers including Tehran's old enemy, the United States. |
Another poll suggests Turkey's AK Party could regain overall majority Posted: 10 Aug 2015 06:21 AM PDT Turkey's AK Party has gained support in the last two months and could recover the absolute majority it lost in June, if a snap parliamentary election were held immediately, Turkish pollster MAK found in its latest survey. The poll is the second in a week to indicate that the AK Party founded by President Tayyip Erdogan would be able to form a single-party government, suggesting that rising violence between government forces and Kurdish militants was bolstering support for the AKP. The AKP would secure 44.7 percent of the vote if a snap election were held immediately, MAK found, almost 4 percentage points more than the 40.9 percent it gained in June, its worst result for more than a decade. |

How GOP Candidates Would Steer U.S. Foreign Policy Posted: 10 Aug 2015 02:15 AM PDT With the start of a long season of debates and campaigning among presidential hopefuls, it's time to start scrutinizing foreign policy positions more closely along party lines.
