Documents show Islamic State obsessions: beards and concubines Posted: 01 Nov 2016 03:15 PM PDT By Babak Dehghanpisheh and Michael Georgy ZARQA/SHURA, Iraq (Reuters) - After Islamic State conquered villages in northern Iraq, it spelled out in minute detail the rules of its self-proclaimed caliphate, from beard length to alms to guidelines for taking women as sex slaves. Islamic State documents and posters, obtained in villages captured by Iraqi forces, highlight a tight and comprehensive system of rule by the militants, who went to great lengths to explain their extremist philosophy. The documents and other materials, printed with Islamic State logos, were found by Reuters in offices used by the group until a few days ago. |
Iraq forces fight way into Mosul Posted: 01 Nov 2016 01:23 PM PDT Iraqi forces fought their way into jihadist-held Mosul on Tuesday, the military said, as a top commander declared the "true liberation" of the city from the Islamic State group had begun. Turkey has insisted that it will play a role in the battle to retake Mosul from the Islamic State group, but Baghdad has rejected this assertion and repeatedly called on Ankara to withdraw troops it has deployed near the jihadist-held city. "The invasion of Iraq will lead to Turkey being dismantled," Abadi said at a televised news conference. |

Pope ends Sweden visit with mass for tiny Catholic community Posted: 01 Nov 2016 12:06 PM PDT Malmö (Sweden) (AFP) - Pope Francis wrapped up his visit to Sweden Tuesday after holding a public mass for the Catholic minority in the Lutheran but secular nation where same-sex marriage is allowed even for priests. The Argentine pontiff urged some 15,000 members of the country's Roman Catholic community -- many of them converts or migrants -- to seek the "path of unity" in comments at a stadium in the southern Swedish town of Malmo. "One very eloquent sign of this is that here in your country, marked as it is by the coexistence of quite different peoples, we are jointly commemorating the fifth centenary of the Reformation," Pope Francis said before heading back to Rome. |

"Willkommen bei den Hartmanns" (Welcome at the Hartmanns) is both a comedy and tragedy featuring Germany's top actors and taking an entertaining look at how ordinary Germans are coping with the arrival of a million refugees since mid-2015. A retired school principal played by Senta Berger offers to help teach German at a refugee centre and ends up convincing her skeptical husband, a prominent doctor, to take in a refugee, a man from Nigeria, at their home in a posh Munich district. |
