Four displaced Iraqi men kidnapped, killed Posted: 25 Apr 2015 02:23 PM PDT Four men who had fled Iraq's western Anbar province for Baghdad were kidnapped by gunmen Saturday and later found shot in the head, security and medical officials said. "Less than half an hour later, their bodies were found" in the Bayaa area in southern Baghdad, blindfolded with gunshots to the head, the officer said. Anbar is a massive desert province that stretches from the borders with Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to the western approach to Baghdad. |

Drone killing accidents reveal Obama’s tough war choices Posted: 25 Apr 2015 10:26 AM PDT Barack Obama became commander in chief vowing to end America's foreign wars as quickly as possible. Instead, he found those politically unpopular wars in Iraq and Afghanistan shifting into something else – violent conflict with different boundaries (or no boundaries), enemies from supposedly friendly countries (including American recruits), the capture and grisly killing of western hostages. |

Three Islamic State car bombs hit Iraq-Jordan border crossing, four dead Posted: 25 Apr 2015 06:17 AM PDT BAGHDAD/AMMAN (Reuters) - Three suicide car bombs exploded at a border crossing between Iraq and Jordan on Saturday, killing four soldiers, a witness and an Iraqi border police source said, in an attack claimed shortly afterwards by Islamic State. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack in a video, saying it had targeted a government complex, control point for the border crossing, and army patrol, according to monitoring group SITE. The Iraqi government announced a new offensive this month to recapture parts of Anbar, Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland, from Islamic State, but the Sunni militants struck back by attacking Ramadi, the Baiji refinery, and al-Thirthar dam. |
IS suicide bombers kill four at Iraq-Jordan crossing Posted: 25 Apr 2015 06:13 AM PDT The Islamic State group claimed an attack Saturday by French, Belgian and Senegalese suicide bombers on the Iraq-Jordan border that officials said killed at least four Iraqi security personnel. The bombers detonated explosives-rigged vehicles, one of them a lorry, at checkpoints on the Iraqi side of the Turaibil crossing, said Sabah Karhout, the head of the Anbar province council. The deputy head of the crossing, Khaled Alwan, and army Colonel Jabr Khailan, both confirmed the attack but gave higher tolls. The Islamic State (IS) jihadist group claimed the assault in a statement posted online, saying the bombers were from France, Belgium and Senegal. |

An Iraqi police source said the attack targeted an army barracks near the crossing and was perpetrated by Islamic State. |
Islamic State takes military barracks, dam in Iraq's Anbar: sources Posted: 25 Apr 2015 05:29 AM PDT Islamic State militants in Iraq took partial control of a water dam and military barracks guarding it in the western Anbar province after fierce fighting through the night that continued on Saturday, security sources and witnesses said. The Iraqi government announced a new offensive this month to recapture parts of Anbar, Iraq's Sunni Muslim heartland, from Islamic State, in an attempt to build on an earlier victory against the group in the central city of Tikrit. |
100 years later, Australia remembers 'baptism of fire' at Gallipoli Posted: 25 Apr 2015 04:30 AM PDT To many Australians the real birth of their nation took place not at federation on Jan. 1, 1901, but in the pre-dawn hours of April 25, 1915, when the first of 60,000 volunteer soldiers landed on the beaches of Turkey's Gallipoli peninsula. Australia actually suffered far greater casualties in the battlefields of France during the Great War, as it was called here. But it is the ANZAC legend, with its emphasis on heroism, fellowship, sacrifice, and egalitarianism, that has become the defining event in Australian history. Thousands more New Zealanders will also mark the anniversary of ANZAC Day — named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, the unit that spearheaded the doomed assault against the well-entrenched Ottoman forces of Mustafa Kemal (later known as Ataturk). Robert Manne, professor of politics at La Trobe University in Melbourne, says the ANZAC campaign marked Australia's first significant break with its British-defined conception as an erstwhile penal colony. |
Deaths raise questions about ways to aid abducted Americans Posted: 25 Apr 2015 12:14 AM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The accidental killing of two hostages in a U.S. operation against al-Qaida has put a new spotlight on the Obama administration's reliance on drones in the battle against terrorism — and has also raised pressure on the White House to revise the nation's oft-criticized strategy for dealing with abducted Americans and their families. |

United States seeks access to Philippine bases as part of Asia pivot Posted: 24 Apr 2015 08:33 PM PDT The United States has asked for access to Philippine military bases in eight locations to rotate troops, aircraft, and ships as Washington shifts its forces to Asia and as China expands its military presence in the South China Sea. U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter, in a speech in Arizona, has outlined Washington's next phase in its Asia "pivot", deploying its most sophisticated destroyers, bombers and fighters to the region. The Asia "pivot" has already seen U.S. Marines rotating through the Australian tropical city of Darwin, the country's closest city to Asia, for training. |
