Still no briefing for Senate intel panel on Mueller report: sources

Still no briefing for Senate intel panel on Mueller report: sourcesThe only committee of the U.S. Congress running a genuinely bipartisan probe of Russian meddling in U.S. politics has still had no word from the Trump administration on briefing the panel about the Mueller report's counterintelligence findings, congressional sources said on Wednesday. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election produced counterintelligence reports, which were sent to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice.

Money: The One Thing America Could Give to North Korea to Denuclearize?

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 09:20 AM PDT

Money: The One Thing America Could Give to North Korea to Denuclearize? It is tempting to blame North Korea for failed nuclear negotiations. Pyongyang has certainly been a dubious, cheating counter-party in the past, most recently over the "Leap Day Deal." It is also true that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un offered President Donald Trump a lopsided, heavily North Korea-balanced deal—full sanctions relief in exchange for closing one aging nuclear facility—when they met for a second time in February. Trump was right to walk away from the "bad deal" that Kim Jong-un presented to him at the Hanoi summit. But it should be noted that the United States has also offered lopsided deals during negotiations. In the run-up to the first Trump-Kim summit in Singapore last year, Trump administration officials kept insisting that they would only accept the "complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization" (CVID) of the North, and that this was too happen speedily. This insistence continued into the fall of 2018, which is when U.S. officials went to Pyongyang to negotiate. CVID is an enormous demand, effectively asking for unilateral disarmament after the North spent decades developing the deadly weapons. In exchange the United States offered vagaries about a peace treaty or modernization, but it did not offer anything close to the value of the North's nukes.

Sanders, speaking at the meeting on behalf of a Walmart employee, read out parts of a resolution which also demands that the company raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour from the current $11.

Dissident Chinese cartoonist shows his face on Tiananmen anniversary

Dissident Chinese cartoonist shows his face on Tiananmen anniversaryOne of China's most prominent political cartoonists who has hidden his identity for years to avoid reprisals from the state revealed his face publicly on Tuesday to mark the 30th anniversary of Beijing's June 4 crackdown on Tiananmen protests. Chinese troops brutally crushed the student-led pro-democracy demonstrations in and around Tiananmen Square, first opening fire on the night of June 3, 1989, killing hundreds, perhaps thousands, witnesses and rights groups say. Chinese Communist Party rulers have since sought to white-wash the violence, never offering an admission of guilt or wrongdoing or releasing a death toll. Badiucao, a 33-year-old China-born cartoonist and artist who has drawn comparisons to graffiti artist Banksy, said he could no longer remain in the shadows despite threats from China's security apparatus prompted by biting satires that poke fun at Beijing's leaders and their perceived abuse of power. In a documentary on his life called "China's Artful Dissident" and shown on ABC television on Tuesday, he shows his face and for the first time details how he was forced to scrap an exhibition in Hong Kong last year given threats against loved ones. "I'm facing this major choice: to be silent forever, or to fight back, to confront, face to face, this situation," the bespectacled cartoonist told Reuters by phone from Melbourne where he lives, still without revealing his name. "By stepping out on the anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre I don't think there's any better time for me to do that." Badiucao posts most of his cartoons online and uses social media extensively. When required to appear in public in the past, he sometimes wore a balaclava. Despite his precautions, he said Chinese authorities somehow discovered his identity last year, possibly through digital surveillance while he was planning the Hong Kong show, which would have been his first international exhibition. His works include neon sculptures of deceased Chinese dissident and Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo and a cartoon of Chinese President Xi Jinping holding a rifle next to a dead Winnie the Pooh. Chinese internet users have in the past likened Pooh's portly appearance to Xi. A small number of people have even used Pooh as a symbol of resistance. Badiucao said he was told by a source that two "policemen" from China would show up for the Hong Kong event - stoking fears he might be abducted to mainland China, which took back control of the former British colony in 1997. A Hong Kong-based publisher of books critical of China's leaders was abducted in Thailand in 2015, one of five people in the Hong Kong book trade who went missing that year and later appeared in custody in mainland China. "Hong Kong is like an egg falling to the ground," Badiucao said. "It might not have impacted the ground but it's already on the way." China's main representative "Liaison Office" in the city gave no response to a Reuters request for comment. Badiucao took part in Hong Kong's 2014 pro-democracy protests that blocked roads for months in a direct challenge to Beijing, but he says he won't return. He criticized a proposed extradition law that would allow suspects in Hong Kong to be sent back to mainland China for the first time. "The extradition law is definitely a new trap, allowing mainland China much more power to use its controlling with violence directly in Hong Kong," he said. "It also generates huge fear." Last year, he launched a public art project on China's "Tank Man", the nameless individual who stood in front of a row of tanks a day after the Tiananmen Square crackdown in an act of defiance. The man's identity and fate remain unknown. The artist urged people around the world to pose in public as Tank Man, in white shirt, black pants, and holding two bags. "In order to pass down memory, it's always about the next generation, how to engage them, how to awaken them from this kind of political indifference," he said. China's Ministry of Public Security did not respond to a request for comment on the fate of Tank Man. When asked about Tank Man by Reuters at a Foreign Ministry media briefing, spokesman Geng Shuang said: "I have no understanding of these situations you mention." Despite blanket Chinese censorship of June 4, the artist said he would reveal the truth through art. "The physical body can be crushed or damaged, but the spirit lives for much longer," he said. "I hope within my art and within my action ... will be a way to pass on the spirit of '89."

From loss to liberation: Germany's evolving postwar attitudeWhen Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked the Allies for the D-Day invasion and the "liberation" of Germany in World War II, she might have raised some eyebrows internationally. There's no denying that the machine guns and howitzers firing at the Allied forces landing in Normandy 75 years ago were manned by German soldiers. When those other leaders went to Normandy for ceremonies on D-Day itself on Thursday, Merkel was back in Berlin, holding a regular meeting with governors and discussing bilateral relations with the prime minister of Kosovo.

‘Daily Show’s’ Trevor Noah Exposes Trump Gaslighting on U.K. Protests

'Daily Show's' Trevor Noah Exposes Trump Gaslighting on U.K. ProtestsDespite receiving an official state dinner from outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth, President Donald Trump and his family have not been receiving the warmest of welcomes during his trip to the United Kingdom this week. "Man, British protesters are no joke," Trevor Noah said after sharing some of the most creative large-scale demonstrations with The Daily Show viewers Tuesday night. "Tens of thousands protesting Trump," he continued, "and this was in the rain, which I know to them is a summer day, but that's not the point." The host marveled at the fact that "even conservative people don't like Trump" in Britain, as evidenced by the snub the U.S. president received from May's likely successor, Boris Johnson. "They'll be like, 'There's too many bloody immigrants, it's time to shut down our borders," but if you ask them if they like Trump, they'll respond, "'Oh God no, not him. He's the worst immigrant of all!'" Of course, for Trump, Noah added, "protests are like Eric, he just pretends they don't exist." Stephen Colbert Mocks Ivanka and Jared's U.K. Trip: They Have 'No Business Being There'"Even coming over today, there were thousands of people cheering and then I heard that there were protests," Trump insisted to reporters during a press conference on Tuesday. "I said, 'Where are the protests? I don't see any protests.' I did see a small protest today when I came, very small, so a lot of it is fake news, I hate to say.""Oh man, Trump is adorable," Noah replied. "Because he doesn't go with one excuse, he goes with all of them and you can pick which one you like best." Mimicking the president, he added, "The people were cheering, I saw no protest, I saw a small protest, but it was a fake protest and I didn't see it!" Fact-checking Trump, Noah reported estimates that "tens of thousands of people marched in the streets, which is not small." "How does Trump always get this wrong?" he asked. "First his inauguration and now this? It's almost like Trump is dyslexic but just for crowd sizes. And also for words." Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Actually, iTunes isn’t dead

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 07:35 AM PDT

Actually, iTunes isn't deadApple earlier this week finally "killed" iTunes on Mac, just as the rumors that preceded WWDC 2019 claimed it would -- but there's really no reason to panic. macOS Catalina will have independent Music, Podcast, and Apple TV apps, and the iTunes features you might be using right now will be spread between these as well as the Finder, which will handle all the iPhone and iPad backups and sync sessions you need. The changes make perfect sense in light of the evolutions of various Apple services. iTunes is just too crowded to handle everything, especially with the imminent arrival of the Apple TV+ streaming service. So that's what killing iTunes on the Mac means... but if you're a Windows PC, you should know nothing changes and iTunes will still be alive and well for years to come. It's a lot easier for Apple to split the iTunes app into different apps that will handle specific needs on the Mac because these apps ship with the operating system. Once you install macOS Catalina later this year, you'll get the new iTunes experience as explained above.Needless to say, it's far more challenging to pull off the same move on platforms that Apple doesn't own, as is the case with Windows. That's because users would have to download all the new apps from the Windows stores once Apple deprecates the current iTunes version. For the time being, iTunes on Windows remains exactly as it is, Ars Technica explains. Apple said iTunes on Windows will not see any changes and it'll work just like it does now. That doesn't mean Apple will never break it apart, and as I said before, it makes sense to give up iTunes and replace it with multiple apps to handle the various features available in the application. But Windows 10 users will be able to manage all their iTunes digital content -- whether it's music, movies, or podcasts -- from the same app. They'll still be able to back up iPhone and iPad locally using iTunes, as well as sync their content across devices. You know, until Apple decides the Windows version of iTunes needs fixing, too.

Dem rivals rebuke Biden for not backing abortion rule repealJoe Biden is under fire from his Democratic presidential rivals and women's rights advocates for his defense of a decades-old prohibition on federal money paying for abortions. Most Democratic White House hopefuls reflect their party's latest platform calling for the outright repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which traces back to a compromise made when Biden was a young Delaware senator in the years after the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling legalized abortion nationwide. The hedging prompted intraparty outcry, with top Democrats reaffirming their commitment to abortion rights and scrapping the Hyde Amendment.

Donald Trump softens stance on climate change in response to Prince Charles' passion for the environment

Donald Trump softens stance on climate change in response to Prince Charles' passion for the environmentPresident Donald Trump appears to have softened his stance on climate change having been "moved" by Prince Charles' passion for the environment.  In a 30-minute long interview, aired on Wednesday morning, Mr Trump - who has previously accused climate experts of having a "political agenda" - told ITV's Good Morning Britain he "totally listened" to Charles when the issue came up. He said of the meeting at Clarence House on Monday: "We had a 15-minute chat and it lasted an hour and a half and he did most of the talking. "What he really wants and what he feels strongly about is the future. He wants the best climate for the future. He wants a good climate and not a disaster."  The US president has always been a sceptic, but when asked whether he now believes in climate change, Mr Trump said:  "I believe there is a change in weather. I think it was called global warning, then it was called climate change, now it's called extreme weather.  Prince Charles and President Trump with the Duchess of Cornwall and First Lady Melania Trump Credit: REUTERS "I think we had a great conversation about - as you would call it - climate change.  "This is real, he believes that. He wants to have a world that's good for future generations and I do, too. "He's Prince Charles, he doesn't have to worry about future generations unless he's a very good person who cares about people, and that's what impressed me, maybe the most." Mr Trump also mentioned China, India and Russia, urging them to take more responsibility for their pollution. Donald Trump's UK state visit, in pictures Before his state visit, hundreds of climate change experts urged Prime Minister Theresa May to confront Donald Trump over his approach to the issue. A letter signed by 250 academics from universities and research bodies across the UK stated that his refusal to tackle global warming is "increasing risks for lives and livelihoods" around the world.

Samsung celebrates 10 years of Galaxy phones with deals and promotionsSamsung would like to wish everyone a Happy Galaxy Day today. If you're not aware, it's a new holiday Samsung is kicking off this month -- and the "day" part is a bit of a misnomer, because Samsung is actually running a month-long series of deals and discounts. All of which is in honor of the June 2009 launch of the first Samsung Galaxy phone, setting the stage for the ascendance of Samsung's Galaxy line of mobile devices that would go on to present a serious challenge to Apple's iPhone over the subsequent decade.Among the slew of promotions that Samsung is running this month (which you read more about here): * You can take advantage of trade-in offers that will net you, for example, as much as $450 off the price of a new Galaxy device * When you buy a Galaxy S10 or Note 9 via Samsung's website by Saturday, June 8, you can score a free pair of wireless Galaxy Buds * Samsung is also offering a 1-year subscription to YouTube Premium for free when you buy certain new Galaxy devices * Additionally, starting today you can stop into participating Samsung locations and earn 2,000 Samsung Rewards points that can be used for services like FandangoNOW and Lyft"The party continues all month long with exclusive offers for you at participating retailers across the country," Samsung announces on the "Happy Galaxy Day" page, before letting you check out retailer-specific offers for customers of brands like Best Buy, Sprint, and US Cellular.Of course, Samsung also has been marking the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy line in other ways -- such as by, well, pressing right ahead with new devices in the Galaxy series. A few months ago, for example, the company introduced handsets like the S10e, a 6.1-inch S10, and the 6.4-inch S10+. And with the Galaxy Note 10 set to launch in just two months, there's also plenty more to come during this milestone year for the company.

Fox’s Tomi Lahren Touts Straight Pride Parade Run by Far-Right Extremists

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:22 AM PDT

Fox's Tomi Lahren Touts Straight Pride Parade Run by Far-Right ExtremistsTomi Lahren's back with a brand new over-the-top aggrieved rant against political correctness and the liberal agenda. And hoo boy, was this one is a doozy. In her latest "First Thoughts" video essay posted Wednesday to Fox News' online streaming service Fox Nation, Lahren came to the defense of a group of far-right extremists who are attempting to hold a "Straight Pride Parade" in Boston later this summer.Noting at the start that June is Gay Pride Month, Lahren insisted she has "no issue with LGBT people being proud of who they are" before snarking that she "can do without men in speedos and buttless chaps parading through the streets." She then pivoted to the possibility that Boston may shut down the straight pride event, claiming "straight people aren't allowed to parade their heterosexuality for all to see." Highlighting that the group calls itself "Super Happy Fun America," the Fox Nation host touted the organization's "mission statement," which purports to embrace straight people's diversity and identity to "promote engagement with the community." Lahren, meanwhile, took issue with the backlash the event has received, claiming white men are the real victims. "Now, you wouldn't think that would be a problem, right? Wrong," she exclaimed. "Don't forget, it is open season on straight white men in this country and y'all aren't allowed to celebrate your straightness! It's 2019—don't you know that's been off limits for the last ten years!"She would go on to attack the "social-justice warriors" who mocked the parade and its organizers, sneering that it was "funny" that the "so-called loving and tolerant leftists and members of the LGBT community" demand respect for their events but demonize those they disagree with. She concluded her tirade in standard fashion, railing against anti-conservative bias before declaring: "I'm not afraid to say it. I'm straight and proud. There, deal with it!" Nowhere in her monologue, however, was any mention that the "Straight Pride Parade" is "a front for a far-right group founded by notorious right-wing brawler Kyle "Based Stickman" Chapman."As The Daily Beast reported this week, event organizer Mark Sahady is also an organizer of extremist group Resist Marxism, a group founded by Chapman, who gained fame on the far-right for attacking anti-fascists with a stick. Resist Marxism, whose members were exposed for making anti-Semitic jokes and slurs in leaked chats, has also used a white-nationalist hate group to run security during at least one event.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Joe Biden beats Donald Trump in Texas poll as he breaks from Democratic party line on abortion

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:36 AM PDT

Joe Biden beats Donald Trump in Texas poll as he breaks from Democratic party line on abortionJoe Biden put clear water between himself and other Democrat presidential candidates on the issue of abortion as he pulled into a surprise poll lead over Donald Trump in the traditionally conservative state of Texas. He enraged pro-choice activists, and many senior Democrat colleagues, by confirming he was against the idea of the US government using taxpayers' money to fund abortion. Mr Biden's campaign confirmed he backs the Hyde amendment, a 40-year-old law banning federal funding for abortion other than in cases of incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. The official position of the Democrat party, and every other Democrat presidential candidate, is that Hyde should be repealed. They argue the ban prevents the poorest women gaining access to abortions.   Mr Biden has set out a clear strategy of trying to occupy the centre ground in 2020, distancing himself from all of the other two dozen Democrat presidential candidates.    White House officials say the poll numbers will change once Mr Trump starts campaigning in earnest Credit: AP The former vice president led Mr Trump 48-44 in a a Quinnipiac University poll of voters in Texas, where victory in 2020 would virtually guarantee him the White House. Other polls gave Mr Biden 12-point leads over Mr Trump in the key "rust belt" state of Michigan, and the swing state of North Carolina. He also had a four-point lead in the usually Republican border state of Arizona.  Mr Biden's stance was lambasted by fellow Democrat candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Kamala Harris, in the biggest collective attack on him since he entered the race in April. Pro-choice activists called his position "unacceptable" and accused him of being an "out of touch white man." Karen Finney, an adviser to Hillary Clinton in 2016, said: "It's a very fine line he's trying to walk. There are just places where he is out of step with the party." A Trump campaign official said Mr Biden's stance was the same as that of the US president. Mr Biden, who is Catholic, has previously expressed his personal opposition to abortion, while supporting Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalised it. Mr Biden is the Democrat front-runner Credit: Bloomberg His position is one that could help Mr Biden to win Texas, usually the biggest Republican-voting state. Mr Trump won it by nine points in 2016, but that was the smallest margin of victory for a Republican since 1996. The Quinnipiac poll showed Mr Biden leading 55 per cent to Mr Trump's 33 per cent among Texas voters classifying themselves as "independent". Quinnipiac pollster Peter Brown said: "The numbers are good for Biden." Manny Garcia, executive director of the Texas Democratic Party, said the state would become the "focal point" of the 2020 campaign. He said: "This is our moment. We all know that once Texas goes blue the Republican path to the White House will be blocked." However, White House officials remained confident the poll numbers would change once Mr Trump begins campaigning in earnest. And, despite the early surge for Mr Biden, most Americans still believe Mr Trump will be re-elected. In a CNN poll 54 per cent said they expected the US president to win again in 2020, with only 41 per cent thinking he would not.

New Jersey denies gas pipeline permits, but allows do-overNew Jersey regulators have denied key permits for a hotly contested pipeline project that would carry natural gas from Pennsylvania to New York, but they're allowing an Oklahoma company to try again. The state Department of Environmental Protection rejected permits Wednesday night, including ones for waterfront development and wetlands work. Last month, New York regulators determined the project did not meet their standards, but like this one, their decision was made without prejudice, allowing Williams to reapply.

Trump administration suspends U.S. educational programs for migrant childrenSAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Trump administration is suspending educational, legal and recreational programs for migrant children in its custody, saying an influx of children crossing the border without a parent or legal guardian was putting a "tremendous strain" on the resources of the agency tasked with housing them. The agency that houses migrant children - the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) - asked Congress for an additional $2.88 billion to increase shelter capacity, HHS spokeswoman Evelyn Stauffer said on Wednesday.

Jerusalem Gay Pride draws thousands under high security

Jerusalem Gay Pride draws thousands under high securityThousands took part in Jerusalem's Gay Pride parade Thursday, waving rainbow flags and calling for tolerance in the Holy City under tight security following a 2015 knife attack by a Jewish extremist that killed a teenager. "Despite the difficulties, it's important to participate, especially in Jerusalem," said Israel Lumbroso, a 28-year-old resident of the city who said he came out of the closet around a year and a half ago. This year marks the 18th Gay Pride march in Jerusalem, but due to the city's conservative religious character, controversy and even violence have erupted at times.

Nobody wants to fly on the disastrous 737 Max, even if Boeing fixes it

Posted: 05 Jun 2019 08:21 AM PDT

Nobody wants to fly on the disastrous 737 Max, even if Boeing fixes itEarlier this year, a Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed in Ethiopia, claiming the lives of all 157 people on board. The crash was the second tragic loss of a 737 Max 8 full of passengers within several months, leading aviation authorities to ground the planes until the company and safety officials could determine what went wrong.Plenty of news regarding the troubled planes has surfaced in the intervening months, revealing that certain software features of the planes' computer systems are likely to blame for both crashes. Pilots are understandably upset that the issue wasn't addressed after the first crash (or, even better, before the planes were allowed to fly), but Boeing now has an even larger problem on its hands: Nobody wants to ride in its shiny new planes. As the Los Angeles Times reports, air travelers are now wary about climbing aboard a 737 in the future, and understandably so. A new survey released by the Atmosphere Research Group suggests that nearly half of all travelers would actually be willing to avoid a 737 Max flight even if it meant having to pay more for an alternate trip.A full 20 percent of respondents said they'd be completely avoiding the 737 Max if and when the fleet is finally cleared for travel once more. A mere 14 percent said they were definitely willing to take a trip in one of the troubled planes. The survey, which included some 2,000 recent fliers who answered 38 questions for the poll, doesn't look good for Boeing, which now has around 350 of the 737 Max aircraft collecting dust while officials sort out how to proceed. The company tested software upgrades that could prevent similar crashes in the future, but with two incredibly tragic crashes within the last year, convincing the traveling public that the planes are air-worthy again will take a lot of work.

TSMC expects short-term impact from U.S. ban on China's HuaweiWashington's move to ban U.S. companies from doing business with China's Huawei Technologies will have a short-term impact on Taiwan's TSMC, its chairman said on Wednesday, although he was upbeat on the outlook for this year. TSMC previously said shipments to its main client Huawei were not affected by U.S. action aimed at curbing the telecom equipment maker's access to American technology, and that it would continue to be a supplier to Huawei. "It certainly will have some impact in the short term," TSMC Chairman Mark Liu told reporters at the company's annual general meeting in the technology hub of Hsinchu.
