U.S. preacher who inspires Syrian rebels faces Internet monitoring Posted: 09 Jun 2014 04:54 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball and David Ashenfelter WASHINGTON/DETROIT (Reuters) - A judge has ordered monitoring of computer and Internet use of a U.S. Islamic preacher regarded by some federal officials and a group that studies radicals as an inspirational figure for foreign fighters in Syria. The close supervision was ordered on Ahmad Musa Jebril, 43, after a court hearing last Thursday at which he was deemed to have violated conditions of his early release from a lengthy prison sentence imposed for fraud and jury tampering. In a written order he issued after the hearing in Detroit, Federal Judge Gerald Rosen did not link his decision to Jebril's online preaching. But federal officials familiar with the case told Reuters the judge's order would allow probation authorities to monitor Jebril's activities to make sure he is not trying to instigate Americans to travel to Syria to join other foreign fighters. |
Audit: More than 57,000 await first VA appointment Posted: 09 Jun 2014 04:31 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 57,000 U.S. military veterans have been waiting 90 days or more for their first VA medical appointments, and an additional 64,000 appear to have fallen through the cracks, never getting appointments after enrolling, the government said Monday in a report newly demonstrating how deep and widespread the problem is. |
Top Employers Drafted to Give Vets Jobs, With No Corporate Perks—Other Than Serving Our Country Posted: 09 Jun 2014 04:02 PM PDT Christina Watkins completed two deployments in Iraq before she returned to California to pursue a Master's degree. Upon graduating, with years of military and academic achievement behind her, Watkins couldn't even land a barista position at Starbucks. Luckily, veteran services like job skill workshops helped her translate her military experience into a civilian occupation. "I stand before you today, employed," Watkins said triumphantly at a press conference on the steps of City Hall in Los Angeles on Monday. |
Insurgents in Iraq overrun Mosul provincial government headquarters Posted: 09 Jun 2014 03:40 PM PDT By Ziad al-Sinjary MOSUL Iraq (Reuters) - Insurgents overran the headquarters of the provincial government in Iraq's northern city of Mosul late on Monday, making further gains in a fourth day of fighting in the country's second-largest city. Governor Atheel Nujaifi was trapped inside the building but managed to escape while police held back an assault by hundreds of militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades, sniper rifles and heavy machine guns mounted on vehicles. The western side of Mosul is now in control of militants, who are advancing steadily southwards in the direction of a major army base where a military airport and top-security prison are located, three army officers told Reuters. Earlier on Monday, Nujaifi made a televised plea to the city's inhabitants to fight militants who have been regaining ground in Iraq and last Friday moved into Mosul. |

Saudi Arabia jails 33 for up to 30 years on terrorism charges Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:26 PM PDT A Saudi court sentenced 33 suspected Islamist militants on Monday to up to 30 years in prison, the official Saudi Press Agency said, eight years after their arrest on terrorism charges. Seventy-one people were arrested in Riyadh's al Nakheel district in 2006 on charges including forming a terrorist cell, possession of weapons and plotting prison escapes. While 33 defendants were sentenced on Monday, the SPA report had no information on the status of the other 38. In 2006, Saudi authorities crushed a three-year al Qaeda insurgency aimed at destabilizing the U.S. ally, the world's No. 1 oil exporter. |
Clinton uses book tour to test waters for 2016 White House run Posted: 09 Jun 2014 01:19 PM PDT By Steve Holland and Gabriel Debenedetti WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With a high-profile book tour this week, Hillary Clinton is looking to define herself as a foreign policy pragmatist who is willing to chart a different course from that of President Barack Obama. The reception Clinton gets is likely to help her decide whether to launch a bid to be elected the first woman U.S. president. Polls show she is the overwhelming favorite for the Democratic presidential nomination should she run. Clinton says she will make up her mind about a presidential run after the November congressional elections, though many Democrats think she will run. |

Checkpoint blasts kill 28 in northern Iraq Posted: 09 Jun 2014 10:11 AM PDT Kirkuk (Iraq) (AFP) - A roadside bomb followed by a suicide bomber detonating an explosives-rigged truck at a police checkpoint in northern Iraq killed 28 people Monday, while seven people died in other attacks. Militants have launched major operations in five different provinces in recent days, killing scores of people and highlighting both their long reach and the weakness of Iraq's security forces. Iraq is suffering its worst violence in years, and with none of the myriad problems that contribute to the heightened unrest headed for quick resolutions, the bloodshed is likely to continue unabated. Local official Shallal Abdul Baban said the blasts at the police checkpoint in Tuz Khurmatu killed 28 people, wounded 148 and caused "great destruction". |

Second tanker of Kurdish oil leaves Turkey despite Baghdad protest Posted: 09 Jun 2014 08:21 AM PDT By Orhan Coskun and David Sheppard ANKARA/LONDON (Reuters) - A second shipment of Iraqi Kurdish crude has sailed from the Turkish port of Ceyhan, industry and government sources said, increasing the stakes in a battle with Baghdad over control of oil sales from the autonomous region. The United Emblem suezmax tanker, carrying 1 million barrels of crude, sailed from the harbor on Turkey's Mediterranean coast on Monday, Reuters AIS Live ship tracking showed. The shipment is the second to leave Ceyhan in three weeks after arriving by pipeline. At least 2 million barrels of Kurdish crude are now at sea, despite protests from Baghdad that only the central government has the right to sell Iraqi oil. |

Syria's Assad grants amnesty after re-election Posted: 09 Jun 2014 06:33 AM PDT Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced a wide-ranging amnesty on Monday, less than a week after he was re-elected to another seven-year term in the midst of civil war. In a decree published by state media, Assad commuted some death sentences to life imprisonment, reduced jail terms for many offences and canceled some others altogether. Foreigners who entered the country "to join a terrorist group or perpetrate a terrorist act" would receive an amnesty if they surrender to authorities within a month, the decree said. Assad has issued several amnesties since protests against his rule erupted in March 2011. |
Iran, Turkey pledge cooperation despite split over Syria Posted: 09 Jun 2014 06:09 AM PDT Iran and Turkey on Monday pledged to work together to stop extremism and bloodshed in the Middle East despite their deep differences over Syria's civil war. "Iran and Turkey, the two important countries in the region, are determined to fight against extremism and terrorism," Iran's President Hassan Rouhani told a news conference in Ankara. He said the instability in the region benefited neither the neighbouring countries, nor the world, and said Turkey and Iran agreed to work together. |
Twin bombing near Kurdish party office in north Iraq kills 30 Posted: 09 Jun 2014 05:24 AM PDT By Mustafa Mahmoud and Ghazwan Hassan KIRKUK/TIKRIT Iraq (Reuters) - At least 30 people were killed in a double bombing targeting the offices of a Kurdish political party in the northern Iraqi town of Tuz Khurmato on Monday, local officials and medical workers said. Security sources said a car bomb blew up at a checkpoint near the local headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party, before a truck packed with explosives was detonated beside a wall. The attack is the latest in a show of strength by militants who have been regaining ground in Iraq and on Sunday killed 18 people in twin blasts targeting PUK offices in the town of Jalawla. The Sunni militant Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) said it was behind that attack and also claimed responsibility for the bombing on Monday, crediting a suicide bomber whose name indicates he was Egyptian. |

Iraq to stay ahead of Iran for now in rivalry for OPEC No.2 spot Posted: 09 Jun 2014 04:58 AM PDT By Alex Lawler VIENNA (Reuters) - A full lifting of sanctions on Iran could spark new rivalries within OPEC as Tehran seeks to reclaim its rank as No. 2 producer from former foe Iraq. The two neighbors both aim to expand supplies in the next few years, which could make life difficult for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries if surging output from outside the group forces OPEC to consider cutbacks. Baghdad got off to a galloping start this year, ramping up production to 3.4 million barrels per day (bpd) and lifting exports to a record 2.8 million bpd in February, nailing its position as OPEC's second-biggest producer behind Saudi Arabia. They may be neck and neck for the next few years, but my money is on Iraq pulling away from a trailing Iran," said Peter Wells of geological consultancy Neftex, who has worked in Iran. |

45 dead in clashes between jihadists in Syria: NGO Posted: 09 Jun 2014 03:06 AM PDT Fresh fighting between the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and a coalition of rebels and an Al-Qaeda affiliate in eastern Syria has left at least 45 fighters dead, a monitoring group said Monday. ISIL, which grew from a former affiliate of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, has faced a backlash in opposition Syria since early this year and is battling a coalition including Al-Qaeda's Al-Nusra Front and Islamist and moderate rebels. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the clashes in the town of Khosham in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor left 17 Al-Nusra and Islamist fighters dead, along with 28 ISIL members. The fighting began on Sunday and raged through the night, the Observatory said. |

Iran president visits Turkey hoping to fix troubled ties Posted: 08 Jun 2014 07:30 PM PDT Iran's president begins a landmark trip to Turkey on Monday as the two countries try to build trade ties despite an often fraught competition for regional influence and deep differences over the Syrian war. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will meet his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, where the powerful neighbours are expected to discuss security concerns as well as trade opportunities. Iran, a Shia theocracy, is the chief backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Sunni-majority Turkey has moved from trying to encourage reform in Syria to overtly supporting the armed opposition. |
