Head of largest VA union on IAVA Commander-In-Chief Forum: "The Choice Could Not Be More Clear" Posted: 07 Sep 2016 05:55 PM PDT "Since frontline employees exposed the waitlist scandal two years ago, the VA has made great strides to hire more doctors and nurses, reduce wait times for appointments, and ensure more veterans get the care they deserve when and where they need it. "As president, Secretary Clinton will work to continue that progress. "Donald Trump, on the other hand, has insulted Gold Star families, ridiculed Sen. John McCain for being captured in Vietnam, and diminished the honor and sacrifice of every service member. |
Clinton defends email handling at national security forum Posted: 07 Sep 2016 05:48 PM PDT By Steve Holland and Jeff Mason NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Wednesday defended her handling of classified information from a private email server at a televised "commander-in-chief" forum that paired her with Republican Donald Trump in separate appearances. Clinton began the NBC forum saying her long experience in government as a U.S. senator and secretary of state made her uniquely qualified to serve as president. Clinton said none of the emails she sent or received were marked top secret, secret or classified, the usual way such material is identified. |
Trump seeks to build up U.S. military, commander in chief test looms Posted: 07 Sep 2016 04:23 PM PDT By Steve Holland PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump pledged on Wednesday to launch a new U.S. military buildup as he and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton compete over who would be more competent at leading the armed forces as commander in chief. Buoyed by polls showing him regaining some ground on Clinton, Trump portrayed himself in an address in Philadelphia as a defender of traditional Republican values on national security but with a distinct unwillingness to launch new wars in the Middle East. |
Trump seeks massive US military buildup, IS defeat plan Posted: 07 Sep 2016 04:09 PM PDT Donald Trump pledged to massively increase US military spending and swiftly demand a defeat plan of the Islamic State (IS) group if he becomes president, burnishing his defense bona fides Wednesday ahead of a forum with Hillary Clinton. Speaking in Philadelphia, the Republican presidential candidate told supporters that he would ask his generals within the first 30 days of his presidency to craft a roadmap to the IS group's annihilation. "Hillary Clinton's legacy in Iraq, Libya, Syria has produced only turmoil and suffering and death," he told the audience. |

Globe to Miss Goal for Universal Education by 50 Years Posted: 07 Sep 2016 02:56 PM PDT More than 260 million children are currently out of school around the world, and a new report shows that initiatives to put kids in classrooms are falling short of global goals. International leaders at last year's United Nations Sustainable Development Summit listed 2030 as the bright line for universal enrollment in K–12. Not only is access to education considered a basic human right, but the report calls schooling the "core" to achieving all 16 of the remaining sustainable development goals, including ending poverty, improving health, and working to combat climate change. |
U.S. says Libya close to eliminating Islamic State from Sirte Posted: 07 Sep 2016 01:56 PM PDT U.S.-backed Libyan forces are close to vanquishing Islamic State from its last holdouts in the city of Sirte, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Wednesday. Carter said forces aligned with Libya's U.N.-backed government, who have been aided by U.S. air strikes since the beginning of August, had cornered Islamic State in one small section of the city. "I expect that they'll eliminate .... remaining opposition shortly," Carter told a news conference in London. |
Top Saudi cleric says Iran leaders not Muslims as haj row mounts Posted: 07 Sep 2016 01:25 PM PDT By Dahlia Nehme MECCA (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's top religious authority said Iran's leaders were not Muslims, drawing a rebuke from Tehran in an unusually harsh exchange between the regional rivals over the running of the annual haj pilgrimage. Tensions between them have been rising since Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran in January following the storming of its embassy in Tehran, itself a response to the Saudi execution of a dissident Shi'ite cleric. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a message published on Monday, criticized Saudi Arabia over how it runs the haj after a crush last year killed hundreds of pilgrims. |

US runs after Russia, seeking Syria peace plan Posted: 07 Sep 2016 12:18 PM PDT After five years of bloodshed and more than a quarter of a million dead in Syria, US Secretary of State John Kerry is once more going to meet his Russian counterpart to secure a peace plan. Washington hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin will back a deal to restore the ceasefire that the UN Security Council had already endorsed in February, only for it to fall apart. |
Police seek woman after car with gas cylinders found in Paris Posted: 07 Sep 2016 12:13 PM PDT French police are seeking a young woman after a car carrying seven gas cylinders was discovered on Saturday night near Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, police and judicial officials said on Wednesday. A couple, aged 34 and 29, were also arrested on a motorway on Tuesday in southern France in connection with the incident and remain in custody, one official said. The Peugeot 607, which had no registration plates, contained seven gas cylinders, one of them empty, on the front passenger seat, police said. |
Iraq militia fighters join battle for Syria's Aleppo Posted: 07 Sep 2016 10:07 AM PDT By Angus McDowall and Ahmed Rasheed BEIRUT/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi Shi'ite militia said on Wednesday it had dispatched more than 1,000 fighters to the frontline in neighboring Syria, escalating foreign involvement in the battle for Aleppo, the biggest prize in five years of relentless civil war. New footage emerged of civilians choking in the aftermath of an apparent attack with poison chlorine gas on an opposition-held district as the battle for Syria's biggest city approaches what could be a decisive phase. Aleppo has been divided for years into government and rebel sectors, but President Bashar al-Assad's army has put the opposition areas under siege and now hopes to capture the whole city in what would be a devastating blow to his enemies. |
How Google aims to disrupt the Islamic State propaganda machine Posted: 07 Sep 2016 10:07 AM PDT The internet is one of the most valuable tools for the Islamic State to spread its vision of radical Islam and lure recruits to the battlefields in Iraq and Syria. Jigsaw, the advanced research outfit created by Google, has developed a technology that would redirect anyone searching terms and phrases associated with supporting the Islamic State (known as IS or ISIS) to instead see antiextremist messages and videos. Google doesn't plan to integrate the effort into its searches on its own – hoping instead to inspire groups fighting IS to implement the method themselves. |
States agree to clear cluster bombs worldwide by 2030 Posted: 07 Sep 2016 08:42 AM PDT More than 100 countries pledged Wednesday to clear unexploded cluster munitions used in conflict zones worldwide by 2030, a new step in the unfinished battle to prevent deaths by the weapons. Parties to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions set their first target date for clearing the explosives which are estimated to have killed and maimed more than 50,000 people worldwide in the past half-century. Many bomblets are brightly coloured and attract children who accounted for nearly half of the 417 victims who were killed or injured by the munitions worldwide last year. |
Years of turbulent Iran-Saudi relations Posted: 07 Sep 2016 08:23 AM PDT Iran has called on the Muslim world to punish the Saudi government for its handling of the hajj pilgrimage, from which Iranians have been excluded. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that the "cursed, evil" Saudi ruling family did not deserve to manage Islam's holiest sites, after a stampede in September 2015 killed around 2,300 foreign pilgrims, including hundreds of Iranians. Relations between the regional rivals have often been fraught since the Islamic revolution toppled the Shah of Iran in 1979. |

The clashes lasted several hours, and the security forces did not sustain any casualties, a local governor told IRNA. The KDPI, formed in 1945, is the oldest Kurdish political party in Iran. |
Iran-Saudi war of words heats up ahead of hajj Posted: 07 Sep 2016 04:47 AM PDT A bitter war of words between Iran and Saudi Arabia intensified Wednesday ahead of the annual hajj pilgrimage from which Iranians have been excluded for the first time in decades. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blasted the "incompetence" of the Saudi royal family as he met with the families of victims of a deadly stampede during last year's hajj. "This incident proves once again that this cursed, evil family does not deserve to be in charge and manage the holy sites," Khamenei said. |
Iran vessel 'harasses,' sails close to U.S. Navy ship in Gulf: U.S. officials Posted: 07 Sep 2016 02:45 AM PDT By Idrees Ali WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy coastal patrol ship changed course after a fast-attack craft from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps came within 100 yards (91 meters) of it in the central Gulf on Sunday, U.S. Defense Department officials said on Tuesday. U.S. officials are concerned that these actions by Iran could lead to mistakes. Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran in January after a deal to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions. |

Number of child refugees, migrants projected to rise in US Posted: 06 Sep 2016 09:03 PM PDT NEW YORK (AP) — More than 127,000 children will come to the United States from abroad this year as refugees or unauthorized migrants, up from less than 100,000 in 2015, a research group estimates. |
Soccer-Cahill strikes again to put Australia in driving seat for Russia Posted: 06 Sep 2016 09:00 PM PDT With 15 minutes left on the clock in the stifling Abu Dhabi heat, Tim Cahill shoved his marker aside, got himself on the end of a sublime Brad Smith cross and scored Australia's winner with his first touch. Cahill has scored more spectacular goals for Australia - his stunning volley against the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup comes to mind - but few have been more important. The United Arab Emirates were riding high after beating Japan in their opening match of the decisive third stage of Asian qualifying and would have fancied their chances of a second win in the 30 degrees Celsius temperatures on Tuesday. |
Oliver Stone on Edward Snowden: "America Is Fed Bullshit and We Buy It" (Q&A) Posted: 06 Sep 2016 09:00 PM PDT The outspoken helmer recalls clandestine meetings with the exiled whistleblower, missing his mother's funeral to make 'Snowden' ("I would have had to cut like four days of filming. And we couldn't afford it") and why he cut Donald Trump out of 'Wall Street': "He was good. I have no complaint." |
