No easy 'plan B' for Iran if nuclear talks with major powers collapse Posted: 23 Nov 2014 11:01 AM PST By Louis Charbonneau and Parisa Hafezi VIENNA (Reuters) - Iranian officials say they can turn to Beijing and Moscow if talks in Vienna fail to end Western sanctions, but with oil prices falling, China's economy slowing and Russia in its own sanctions-induced slump, Tehran's "plan B" hardly looks ideal. Talks between Iran and six powers, which include China and Russia as well as the United States and three big EU countries, are expected to fail to reach a deal to lift U.S. and EU sanctions by a deadline on Monday. ... |

Growing UK concern about 'lone wolf' terrorist attacks: top policeman Posted: 23 Nov 2014 08:02 AM PST By Andrew Osborn LONDON (Reuters) - Law enforcement authorities in Britain are increasingly worried about the risk of a "lone wolf"-style militant attack and have foiled four or five plots this year, London's top police officer said on Sunday. The assertion, by Bernard Hogan-Howe, the commissioner of London's Metropolitan Police, comes on the eve of a terrorism awareness campaign and as the government prepares to introduce a law that would make it easier for the police to identify who is using a computer or a mobile phone at any given time. ... |
Iraqi Kurds prepare Sinjar mountain offensive Posted: 23 Nov 2014 07:51 AM PST By Isabel Coles ARBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - Kurdish forces in northern Iraq are drawing up plans to break Islamic State's siege of Sinjar mountain, where hundreds of minority Yazidis remain stranded months after fleeing their homes. Seeking to regain territory and repair pride in his military forces, Masoud Barzani, president of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region, is overseeing efforts to retake the mountain, senior party members said. Islamic State attacked the Sinjar area in August, sending thousands of Yazidis fleeing up the mountain, a craggy strip some 40 miles (65 km) long. ... |
Iraqi forces say retake two towns from Islamic State Posted: 23 Nov 2014 06:32 AM PST By Saif Hameed BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces said on Sunday they retook two towns north of Baghdad from Islamic State fighters, driving them from strongholds they had held for months and clearing a main road from the capital to Iran. There was no independent confirmation that the army, Shi'ite militia and Kurdish peshmerga forces had completely retaken Jalawla and Saadiya, about 115 km (70 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Many residents fled the violence long ago. At least 23 peshmerga and militia fighters were killed and dozens were wounded in Sunday's fighting, medical and army sources said. ... |
Central London rail station evacuated after fire, nobody hurt Posted: 23 Nov 2014 05:32 AM PST LONDON (Reuters) - One of London's busiest railway stations, Charing Cross, was evacuated on Sunday after a fire caused by a suspected electrical fault, the British Transport Police (BTP) said. The incident generated a lot of traffic on social media, in part because Britain raised its terrorism alert in August to the second-highest level, saying Islamist militants operating in Syria and Iraq posed the biggest security threat. Pictures from the scene showed part of a stationary passenger train on fire with a crowd looking on. ... |
Putin says Russia not isolated over Ukraine, blames West for frosty ties Posted: 23 Nov 2014 05:05 AM PST By Gabriela Baczynska MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin blamed the West for worsening relations with Russia since the Ukraine crisis and said Moscow would not allow itself to become internationally isolated behind another 'Iron Curtain'. In an interview published by state news agency TASS on Sunday, Putin also said Western sanctions against Moscow, combined with the slide in the rouble and oil price falls would have no "catastrophic consequences" on Russia's economy. ... |
Islamic State has lured 550 Germans into fighting: spy agency Posted: 23 Nov 2014 03:17 AM PST BERLIN (Reuters) - The number of Germans fighting alongside Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq has increased sharply to 550 and around 180 have returned, the head of Germany's domestic intelligence said in a newspaper interview published on Sunday. "We are concerned about the high number of departures. Especially in the last six weeks, it has risen further," Hans-Georg Maassen told Welt am Sonntag. "By now we are counting 550 people, that is how many have left Germany to go to Syria and Iraq," he added. The previous number was 450 people. ... |

Insight: For many young British Muslims tug of peace is stronger than pull of war Posted: 23 Nov 2014 02:13 AM PST By Ahmed Aboulenein BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - For some British Muslims, the path to jihad and the path to peaceful aid work can traverse much of the same terrain. From an office in Britain's second largest city, Waseem Iqbal and a friend are planning a trip to the Middle East. In Jordan, they will bring food packages for Syrian refugees. Iqbal, 27, chose charity work not violence. "How do you save innocents in Syria? By going into a war zone and getting yourself killed? Or by... bringing people water pumps, schools and food packages? This is what saves innocents," he said. ... |
