Baby deaths soar in Venezuela crisis Posted: 10 May 2017 04:22 PM PDT Thousands of babies died in Venezuela last year, new official data show, highlighting the tragic impact of the country's economic crisis as political tension heightened with deadly street clashes Wednesday. The health ministry said deaths of infants under the age of one soared by 30 percent in 2016, a year when hospitals and protesters complained of severe shortages of medical supplies. The collapse in prices for Venezuela's crucial oil exports has left it short of cash to import medicine and basic goods. |
Spiky Ankylosaurus Looks Like Monster from 'Ghostbusters' Posted: 10 May 2017 09:56 AM PDT Due to its uncanny resemblance to Zuul, paleontologists are calling it Zuul crurivastator (CRUR-uh-vass-TATE-or). The genus name is a nod to Zuul, the fictional Gatekeeper of Gozer in "Ghostbusters." The species name translates to "destroyer of shins" in Latin, a name inspired by the club at the end of the dinosaur's tail. Like Zuul in "Ghostbusters," Z. crurivastator has a short, rounded snout, large horns and a gnarled appearance, the researchers said. |

California revised budget up slightly, reinstates some cuts Posted: 11 May 2017 01:09 PM PDT California Governor Jerry Brown on Thursday revised his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, raising total spending by 2.2 percent and increasing funding for schools and transportation, even as he warned that the state's economy likely cannot sustain the growth of recent years. The revised budget for the 2018 fiscal year, which starts July 1, provides a $6 billion loan to the California Public Employees' Retirement System, the nation's largest public pension fund, in an effort to reduce its unfunded liability. The budget also includes increased funding to boost staffing at the state's Justice Department to address policies from the Trump administration that affect public safety, health care, the environment, consumer affairs and constitutional issues. |

OPEC wants 'collective efforts' to counter US oil output Posted: 11 May 2017 04:28 AM PDT OPEC said Thursday that oil producers needed to make more joint efforts to match supply and demand in the oil market in the face of rising output in the United States. Ahead of a May 25 meeting of the cartel where its members and Russia are expected to roll over an agreement to cut production, OPEC said in its monthly market report that common policies were needed for market stability. While decreased stocks and an improving global economy were supporting oil demand, "continued rebalancing in the oil market by year-end will require the collective efforts of all oil producers to increase market stability," OPEC said. |

Hezbollah says future war would be on Israeli territory Posted: 11 May 2017 11:54 AM PDT By Ellen Francis and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Hezbollah said on Thursday that any future conflict between the Shi'ite group and Israel could take place inside Israeli territory, as tensions rise between the arch foes. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, also said in a speech televised live that the group was dismantling all its military positions along Lebanon's eastern border with Syria, and this area would now be patrolled just by the Lebanese army. Hezbollah, an ally of Tehran and Damascus, has been fighting for years in Syria's conflict against an array of rebels and Sunni Islamist fighters. |
James Corden mocks Trump's James Comey decision in comical rant Posted: 10 May 2017 07:30 AM PDT Last night on the Late Late Show, James Corden weighed in on Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey. SEE ALSO: James Corden and Stephen Curry singing along to 'Frozen' is a joy to behold The exact reason for Comey's demise might be unclear to the rest of the world, but Corden seems to have the whole thing figured out. In the video above, Corden lists the different speculations about Comey's dismissal. The White House says he was fired for how he handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Others say it was because of how he dealt with the Russia investigation. Corden, however, has a much simpler explanation. "Comey is being fired because Donald Trump is crazy. He a crazy man. He be crazy." Corden then drags Sean Spicer for general incompetence and delivers a round-up of the latest in Republican politics. |

Bid to revoke Obama methane rule fails in surprise U.S. Senate vote Posted: 10 May 2017 03:12 PM PDT By Valerie Volcovici WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Wednesday rejected a resolution to revoke an Obama-era rule to limit methane emissions from oil and gas production on federal lands, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump's efforts to free the drilling industry from what he sees as excessive environmental regulation. The Congressional Review Act resolution received just 49 votes after Republican leaders scrambled for weeks to secure the 51 needed to pass it. The resolution would have revoked the rule and prevented similar regulations from being introduced. |

Rare 'Dragon-Skin' Ice Spotted During Antarctic Research Voyage Posted: 11 May 2017 08:41 AM PDT Ice that looks like a dragon's scales may sound like something from an episode of "Game of Thrones," but researchers recently observed the rare type of sea ice known as "dragon skin" in Antarctica. Scientists aboard the U.S. icebreaker research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer recently sailed to an Antarctic polynya — areas of open water that act as ice factories — to study the process of ice formation during the autumn-winter season. The "dragon-skin" sighting was an early highlight of the expedition, because the rare ice formation had not been seen in Antarctica since 2007, the researchers said. |
