Tapping into anxieties of white America? Trump isn't the first Posted: 22 Mar 2016 03:24 PM PDT Recommended: What do you know about Donald Trump? "One plainclothes policeman, using a pair of handcuffs as brass knuckles, cut the face of a heckler who shoved him," said the Chicago Tribune in its account of the wild Wallace rally in Detroit on Oct. 29 of that year. Rabble-rousing has a long and complex history in United States politics. |

Brussels attacks show how presidential candidates differ on security Posted: 22 Mar 2016 02:44 PM PDT Many voters have already heard of Donald Trump's plan to ban all Muslims entering the country "until we can figure out what's going," as he suggested in December. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing attacks at the Belgian capital's airport and subway system. Experts have said some of Trump's antiterror prescriptions might be illegal (targeting family members) or perhaps impossible (shutting down portions of the Internet). |
Brussels attacks another reminder of Belgian security's weak link Posted: 22 Mar 2016 01:55 PM PDT By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The Belgian government warned at the weekend that there might be an attack after the security services captured their most wanted man. Tuesday's explosions, which killed at least 30 people at the main Brussels airport and an underground rail station, came just days after Belgium's security services caught the last surviving suspect in November's attacks on Paris. Belgium has announced 400 million euros ($450 million) of extra spending to upgrade its security capabilities since it emerged that the country of 11 million people served as the base for the Paris attackers who killed 130 people. |

Tunisia forces break up Islamic State recruiting cell Posted: 22 Mar 2016 12:37 PM PDT Tunisian police have broken up a cell recruiting fighters for Islamic State in Libya, authorities said, part of a security crackdown on jihadists crossing the border. Tunisian security forces are on high alert after dozens of Islamist militants stormed through the border town of Ben Guerdan earlier this month attacking army and police posts and triggering street battles in which troops killed about 50 militants over three days. Twelve soldiers and seven civilians were also killed in the worst such attack in Tunisia's history. |

Brussels bombings put 'the whole of Europe' under attack Posted: 22 Mar 2016 08:04 AM PDT The outpouring of support for Belgium across Europe in the wake of the deadly terrorist attack in Brussels during rush hour this morning is more than just the solidarity expressed after a tragedy. As the de facto hub of the European Union and base of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the bombings at the city's international airport and underground subway system, killing at least 30 people, have struck at the heart of the European Union. Already under stress from the migration crisis that has spurred infighting and border closures across the bloc, today's attacks in the European capital further challenge the EU's solidarity against extremism. |

Iraq seeks financial agreement with Kurds before pumping crude to Turkey Posted: 22 Mar 2016 04:52 AM PDT Iraq will not resume pumping crude through a Kurdish pipeline to Turkey unless it reaches a financial agreement with the Kurdish regional government, the Iraqi oil minister said on Tuesday. Adel Abdul Mahdi confirmed on his Facebook page that the central Iraqi government had decided to stop pumping crude from fields under the management of its state-run company in northern Iraq through the pipeline. He said state-run North Oil Company previously fed 150,000 barrels a day into the pipeline that carries crude from the Kirkuk fields and other reservoirs managed by the Kurdish authorities to the Turkish Mediterranean terminal of Ceyhan. "We have two options" in order to resume pumping, the minister said, demanding either a return to a previous oil agreement between Baghdad and the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), or making a new agreement. |

The arrests in a Sydney suburb on Monday of the schoolgirl and a man, aged 20, were part of counter-terrorism operations aimed at thwarting attacks by domestic radicals at home and disrupting the flow of funds to foreign fighters overseas. "We anticipate that both these people will be charged later today and attend court and the charge that we anticipate they will have is one of financing terrorism," New South Wales state police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn told reporters. |
