Kosovo PM says brother, other relatives, tried to migrate to EU Posted: 20 Mar 2016 01:55 PM PDT By Fatos Bytyci PRISTINA (Reuters) - Kosovo's prime minister said on Sunday his brother and some nephews and nieces were among tens of thousands of Kosovars who tried to enter the European Union last year fleeing poverty and unrest in their homeland. More than a million migrants took the so-called Balkan corridor to western Europe in the past year, before countries along the route closed their borders. While most publicity has been given to those fleeing conflict in Syria or Iraq, Kosovo also saw its biggest exodus last year since the 1998-99 guerrilla war against Serbian rule. |

Turkey says Istanbul suicide bomber was member of Islamic State Posted: 20 Mar 2016 11:21 AM PDT By Ece Toksabay and Ayla Jean Yackley ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish member of the Islamic State militant group was responsible for Saturday's suicide bombing in Istanbul that killed three Israelis and an Iranian, Turkey's interior minister said. The attack in Istiklal Street, Istanbul's most popular shopping district, is the fourth such bombing in Turkey this year and the second one by Islamist militants. In January a suicide bomber blew himself up in Istanbul's historic heart, killing 12 German tourists. |
French prime minister says 600-plus people have left France for Syria or Iraq Posted: 20 Mar 2016 10:21 AM PDT More than 600 people have now left France for Syria and Iraq, with about 800 more wanting to leave to join Islamic State (IS), Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on Sunday. The figures show little respite in the number of people joining the jihadist group despite multiple bombing campaigns against IS strongholds and a crackdown by French authorities to prevent people from leaving the country after two major attacks in France during last year. Today 2029 French citizens or residents are implicated in jihad networks." European governments have been tightening anti-terrorism laws as the Syrian conflict enters its sixth year, agreeing to share more intelligence and taking down radical websites to try to stop their citizens from going to fight in the Middle East and bringing militancy home. |
As Iraqi civilian rule weakens, Shi’ite clerics call the shots Posted: 20 Mar 2016 10:10 AM PDT By Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - With Iraq's politicians tainted by corruption and the army's standing hurt by battlefield defeats, two Shi'ite clerics have re-emerged as leaders in matters of state. In their different ways, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani and Hojatoleslam Moqtada al-Sadr, Iraq's two most influential Shi'ite leaders, are pressuring Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to tackle graft at the heart of Iraq's government. The timing of their intervention is delicate. ... |
Posted: 20 Mar 2016 09:02 AM PDT Farmers like him stand at the heart of a story that has transformed Colombia from the world's cocaine capital to one of Latin America's great success stories. Other such efforts launched in subsequent years, such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq, are widely considered failures and have turned off much of official Washington to the efficacy of big state-building programs. |
Some U.S. Marines on ground in Iraq to fight ISIS: U.S. military Posted: 20 Mar 2016 08:44 AM PDT A detachment of U.S. Marines is on the ground in Iraq to support U.S. and coalition efforts against Islamic State, the U.S. military said on Sunday. A group of Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, or MEU, will add to the U.S. forces already in Iraq battling Islamic State, it said. |

Iraq exports first natural gas shipment in its history Posted: 20 Mar 2016 07:04 AM PDT BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq on Sunday exported the first shipment of natural gas in its history, a key development for the OPEC member struggling to feed a cash-strapped economy amid an expensive fight against the Islamic State group. |
Paris fugitive helped more by friends and neighbors than Islamic State Posted: 20 Mar 2016 06:53 AM PDT By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - After the Paris attacks, security forces searched far and wide for prime suspect Salah Abdeslam, who vanished after returning to Brussels, believing Islamic State could have spirited him away to Turkey, Syria or Morocco. It appears Europe's most wanted man never left the Belgian capital. As security services seek to understand how Islamic State operates in Europe to prevent more attacks, Abdeslam's case highlights the difficulty of tracking suspects who can rely on the protection of community networks, many of which do not involve religious radicals and are not on the police radar. |

At least 13 Egyptian policemen killed in Sinai attack Posted: 20 Mar 2016 12:25 AM PDT At least 13 Egyptian policemen were killed in the Sinai Peninsula when Islamist militants fired a mortar round at a security checkpoint in the city of Arish, security and medical sources said on Saturday. Islamic State claimed responsibility on several websites for the attack, and Egyptian state media later confirmed it. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a massive explosion and said the city's entrances and exits had been closed off by security forces. Egypt is battling an insurgency that gained pace after its military overthrew President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's oldest Islamist movement, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule. The insurgency, mounted by Islamic State's Egyptian branch Sinai Province, has killed hundreds of soldiers and police and started to attack Western targets within the country. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former military chief who led Mursi's ouster, describes Islamist militancy as an existential threat to Egypt, an ally of the United States. |
Nadiya Savchenko: Ukraine's lionised and demonised fighter Posted: 20 Mar 2016 12:02 AM PDT Nadiya Savchenko is both lionised as a fearless Ukrainian freedom fighter -- and demonised as the alleged accomplice in the murder of two Russian reporters in her country's separatist east. The 34-year-old Ukrainian army pilot has most recently featured on global TV screens wearing patriotic T-shirts inside the glass cage of a Russian courtroom, where she faces 23 years behind bars. Kiev and its Western allies believe she is a pawn in the Kremlin's broader aggression against Ukraine, who they say was abducted by pro-Moscow separatists and smuggled to Russia before being slapped with false charges. |

Moqtada Sadr, Iraq's 'enfant terrible', back in the spotlight Posted: 19 Mar 2016 05:57 PM PDT A string of mass protests culminating in an ongoing sit-in at the gates of Baghdad's Green Zone have thrust the mercurial Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr back on to centre stage. Thousands of them defied a government ban on Friday to heed their leader's call and set up tents at the main entrances of the vast restricted area in central Baghdad which houses key state institutions as well as foreign embassies. Sadr says the goal of the protests is the formation of a cabinet of technocrats to replace party-affiliated politicians he says have perpetuated a system based on nepotism and patronage. |
