Grandi, who will take over the main organization on the front lines of the biggest global refugee and migration crisis since World War Two, has held a number of senior U.N. posts. Grandi already has years of experience at the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the agency he will lead. |

For veterans on death row, question of whether war trauma matters Posted: 11 Nov 2015 09:07 AM PST Nearly 300 former soldiers, many of them combat veterans who fought from Southeast Asia to Afghanistan, sit on death rows across the United States – nearly 10 percent of the US death row population, according to a new study. Legal rulings have tended to dismiss the connection between battle trauma and home front violence – even amid an 89 percent rise in homicides by veterans following the invasion of Afghanistan, compared with a six-year period before 9/11, the report states. Soldiers who kill civilians at home are seen as a troubling contradiction to the traditionally valorous picture of returning soldiers, says Richard Dieter, author of the report by the Death Penalty Information Center, an anti-death penalty advocacy group. |

Veterans Day: For many vets, college is scarier than Afghanistan Posted: 11 Nov 2015 06:47 AM PST When Matthew Maclaine arrived in Afghanistan's Helmand Province with his scout sniper platoon in 2012, it was a dream come true. "Whenever you watch movies, snipers enter behind enemy lines," Mr. Maclaine says. It was a satisfaction in sharp contrast to a rather different sort of hostile environment – his arrival at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., after four years in the Marines. |

Honor This Veterans Day by Learning Our Veterans' Stories Posted: 11 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST The stories of two veterans profoundly changed my philosophy on Veterans Day. One was a member of World War II's greatest generation, the other a member of the disdained Vietnam generation. A little over a year ago, both were unknown to me -- this Veterans Day I'd like to share their stories and thank them for the voyage of discovery on which they took me. |

Ben Carson Emerges From Fourth GOP Debate Unscathed Posted: 10 Nov 2015 09:55 PM PST Rocked by news reports that questioned aspects of his life story, along with urgent damage control by his surrogates and his irritation at scrutiny of the up-from-poverty narrative central to his appeal, Dr. Ben Carson's curious, front-running presidential campaign seemed to have smoke billowing from under the hood. That created an interesting question heading into Tuesday's Wisconsin debate: Would Carson's opponents in the fourth of the GOP's demolition-derby debate series try to side-swipe his wobbling campaign? Or would Carson make a tactical change, take his campaign out of slow-and-steady mode and hit them first? |
