A house in Zumar village is marked with the word "Kurd", reserving it for a Kurdish residentThe Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq said on Tuesday it is committed to investigating claims of abuses in areas occupied by both Kurds and Arabs, in response to an Oct. 10 report by Reuters. The story (www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/mideast-crisis-kurds-land/) detailed the case of a Kurd who said he had occupied a house formerly owned by an Arab family in the town of Zumar, after Kurdish Peshmerga fighters dislodged Islamic State militants from the region. The government repeated its past statements that it did not have a policy of pushing Arabs out of areas that Kurdish forces have retaken from Islamic State.

A supporter holds a flag depicting Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan during a pro-government demonstration in AnkaraPatriotism in Turkey has always been strong, but in the wake of July's failed coup by members of the military, President Tayyip Erdogan has tapped freely into the populist, banner-draped fervor to remould the nation in his image. The questions are, what sort of Turkey does Erdogan want, and what steps will this powerful and sometimes unpredictable leader take to achieve his vision? At one level, diplomats and analysts say, Erdogan has made his aims perfectly clear.

Posted: 11 Oct 2016 07:55 AM PDT

Iraq's Prime Minister al-Maliki speaks during an interview with Reuters in BaghdadBy Ahmed Rasheed and Maher Chmaytelli BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Nuri al-Maliki is once again positioning himself as Iraq's most powerful man, poised to return as kingmaker in a fight for influence that could decide Iraq's fate as a unified country after the coming battle to recapture Mosul from Islamic State. Two years after he was pressured to leave office by both the United States and Iran for failing to stop Islamic State fighters from sweeping across the country, the former prime minister still leads a powerful Shi'ite parliamentary bloc. Maliki's office denies that he has any plans to return to the premiership, and his allies say he is more likely to try to name an ally as the next prime minister rather than take back the role for himself.

Clinton v Trump Debate Part Two – Enough Is Enough!

Posted: 11 Oct 2016 07:00 AM PDT

Clinton v Trump Debate Part Two – Enough Is Enough!Like most of those polled immediately after the event, I think Hillary Clinton clearly won, and overall I thought she handled the Town format well. At a time when appearances count, her trim white collar and blouse – stylish enough not to be considered prim – was the perfect rebuttal to the recently unmasked sexual predator. And she actually answered many of the questions, often with thought and preparation. As for that other elephant in the room – the fallout from the revolting tape where he boasts of grabbing women in the crotch and kissing them without warning (because "when you're a star … you can do anything") — the pre-debate punditocracy had self-righteously decreed that Trump would have to apologize, really apologize, and appear contrite to get beyond the ugliness.

"For this candidate to put his political expediency ahead of any realization of pain and suffering of the families is shameful," Khan said in an interview with CNN. The New York businessman raised the name of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan in a Sunday night presidential debate while criticizing Democratic rival Hillary Clinton for voting in favor of the 2003 invasion of Iraq when she was a U.S. senator.

Iraqi Shiites take part in commemorations marking the mourning period of Ashura in the shrine of Imam Abbas in the holy city of Karbala, on October 10, 2016Thousands of Iraqi security personnel guarded areas in and around Karbala on Tuesday to protect hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims flocking to the shrine city for annual mourning rituals. Shiites in Iraq have come under frequent attack by Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group who regard them as heretics and who still control some territory in Anbar province, to the west of Karbala, though attacks in the city itself are rare. Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, is buried in Karbala, and Shiite pilgrims pack the city each year for Ashura commemorations, which mark his death in the 7th century.

IEA says oil market may rebalance faster if OPEC sticks to target

Posted: 11 Oct 2016 01:38 AM PDT

A person carrying an umbrella walks by the OPEC headquarters in ViennaGlobal oil supply could fall in line with demand more quickly if OPEC and Russia agree to a steep enough cut in production, but it is unclear how rapidly this might happen, the International Energy Agency said on Tuesday. OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, agreed last month to cut production to around 32.5 to 33 million barrels per day (bpd) and Russia has signaled it is ready to join in any effort to temper supply and shrink a stubborn global surplus of unwanted crude. Oversupply helped send oil prices from $115 a barrel in June 2014 to as low as $27 in January this year.

Goldman sees lower chance of oil market rebalancing in 2017

Posted: 10 Oct 2016 08:32 PM PDT

Used oil barrels are seen outside a garage in Cuevas del Becerro(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs said a planned oil output cut by producer cartel OPEC and other exporters like Russia has become a "greater possibility", but warned that any reduction likely won't be deep enough to re-balance markets in 2017. "Higher production from Libya, Nigeria and Iraq are reducing the odds of such a deal rebalancing the oil market in 2017," Goldman analysts said in a note to clients dated Oct. 10. Any failure to reach such a deal, however, would push prices sharply lower to $43 per barrel as the global oil market will still have surplus crude in the fourth quarter.
