South of New Orleans, Nate spares parish devastated by Hurricane Katrina Posted: 08 Oct 2017 10:52 AM PDT By Jessica Resnick-Ault BELLE CHASSE, La. (Reuters) - Residents of Louisiana's lower Plaquemines Parish, the swampy peninsula that shadows the Mississippi River as it empties into the Gulf of Mexico, know Nate let them off very easy, certainly when compared with hurricanes of years past. As the Category 1 storm approached this weekend, memories of the devastation of Katrina 12 years ago, and to a lesser extent, Issac in 2012, loomed large in the scattered hamlets that cling to the few spots of terra firma that line the river south of New Orleans. "I had prayed for this - that we would be spared," said Amos Cormier, president of the parish, Louisiana's equivalent to a county. |

Kim Jong-un promotes sister to politburo Posted: 08 Oct 2017 05:42 AM PDT Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, has appointed his sister to the politburo, the most powerful body in the isolated regime's ruling party. 28-year-old Kim Yo-jong, who was in January subjected to a US Treasury blacklist for North Korea's human rights abuses, will replace Mr Kim's aunt, Kim Kyong-hee, who is believed to be seriously ill. In an address on Saturday to his ruling Workers' Party, the North Korean leader also underlined his commitment to developing nuclear weapons, despite mounting from pressure from the US to back down. Mr Kim, who is chairman of the party, accused the US of trying to "completely stifle the sovereignty of North Korea" by "cooking up" sanctions resolutions in the United Nations and of mobilising "vassal forces" against Pyongyang. He added that the geopolitical situation in north-east Asia showed that the regime has been "absolutely right" to push ahead with the creation of more powerful nuclear weapons and that it should "keep to this road in the future", North Korea's KCNA news agency reported. This combo of file photos shows an image (L) taken on April 15, 2017 of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un on a balcony of the Grand People's Study House following a military parade in Pyongyang; and an image (R) taken on July 19, 2017 of US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump remained unconciliatory on Saturday, saying in a series of tweets that he does not rule out military action against North Korea and insisting that previous US administrations had failed. "Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts of money paid ... hasn't worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, making fools of US negotiators", he wrote. Donald Trump on North Korea: 'I'll fix the mess' 00:00 "Sorry, but only one thing will work!" There was no further elaboration. South Korea and the US have increased monitoring of the activities of the North Korean military out of concern that Pyongyang is planning another long-range missile test to mark the upcoming anniversary of the founding of the North's ruling party. The 72nd anniversary of the creation of the party is marked on October 10 and has in the past been an occasion for demonstrations of the regime's power. North Korea's first nuclear test was carried out on October 9, 2006, and was used to whip up national pride ahead of the anniversary. Trump: We'll deal with 'Little Rocket Man' Kim Jong-un 01:34 The concern in Seoul and Washington was raised after Anton Morozov, a Russian politician, told media after a visit to Pyongyang that North Korea is preparing to test a long-range missile with the potential to reach the west coast of the US. Speaking in Moscow on Friday, Mr Morozov said, "In general, their mood is rather belligerent". A military official in Seoul told Yonhap News that, "Some movements have been continuously detected from the North's missile facilities and bases. "We are maintaining the heightened reconnaissance and preparedness posture", he said. Both South Korean and US forces have stepped up aerial monitoring of the North, along with radar surveillance designed to immediately identify a missile launch. |
Allies desert Syria jihadists before Turkey-backed battle Posted: 07 Oct 2017 07:25 PM PDT Syria's former Al-Qaeda affiliate was once a key ally for many rebels but they are now abandoning it as the jihadists face a Turkey-backed operation in its stronghold. The Fateh al-Sham Front, formerly known as Al-Nusra Front, is the most powerful faction in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib, which remains largely beyond the control of the regime. It heads the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham coalition, which brought together an array of sympathetic rebel and jihadist groups and holds sway across Idlib after ousting rival factions earlier this year. |
Columbus Day vs. Indigenous Peoples Day Posted: 09 Oct 2017 01:03 PM PDT A movement to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day has gained momentum in some parts of the U.S., with Los Angeles in August becoming the biggest city yet to decide to stop honoring the Italian explorer and instead recognize victims of colonialism. Austin, Texas, followed suit Thursday. It joined cities including San Francisco, Seattle and Denver, which had previously booted Columbus in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day. But the gesture to recognize indigenous people rather than the man who opened the Americas to European domination also has prompted howls of outrage from some Italian-Americans, who say eliminating their festival of ethnic pride is culturally insensitive, too. "We had a very difficult time in this country for well over a hundred years," said Basil Russo, president of the Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America. "Columbus Day is a day that we've chosen to celebrate who we are. And we're entitled to do that just as they are entitled to celebrate who they are." It's not about taking anything away from Italian-Americans, said Cliff Matias, cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, which hosted a Re-Thinking Columbus Day event Sunday and Monday in New York. "The conversation is Columbus," he said. "If they're going to celebrate Columbus, we need to celebrate the fact that we survived Columbus." The debate over Columbus' historical legacy is an old one, but it became emotionally charged after a similar debate in the South over monuments to Confederate generals flared into deadly violence in August at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. In Akron, Ohio, a September vote over whether to dump Columbus opened a racial rift on the city council that was so heated conflict mediators were brought in to sooth tensions. In New York, where 35,000 people marched in Monday's Columbus Day parade, vandals last month doused the hands of a Christopher Columbus statue in blood-red paint and scrawled the words "hate will not be tolerated." Activists calling for the city to change the parade's name also are expected to hold a demonstration. On Sunday, three demonstrators briefly interrupted a wreath-laying ceremony at the Columbus statue in Columbus Circle. Two dressed in fake chains. One wore a hooded white sheet. Police said one person was arrested. Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, appointed a committee to evaluate whether monuments to certain historical figures should be removed, prompting a backlash from fellow Italian-Americans who vowed to defend the Columbus statue, which has stood over Columbus Circle for more than a century. But the mayor still marched in Monday's parade. "You can debate the historical figure of Christopher Columbus, but you can't debate the contribution of Italian-Americans to this country," de Blasio said at the start of the march. Wanted man taunts police on Facebook, it backfires big time Posted: 09 Oct 2017 06:10 AM PDT Cheeky criminals have taunted law enforcement since the dawn of time. So it's no surprise that in the era of social media, spats between suspects and police have found a new platform. SEE ALSO: Wanted man taunts police on Facebook, gets a chilling response A Michigan man, known on Facebook as Champagne Torino, is wanted on "existing warrants" and is a massive troll. When Redford Police Department posted about a home invasion, Torino commented saying "You guys suck!". To which the police department replied: "Michael, given your veiled threats to residents and officers on other threads, and your inability to engage in constructive dialogue on this page, this is your one warning. If it continues you will be blocked." (Michael is presumably his real name, but doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Let's stick to Champagne or Torino for the sake of simplicity!) Image: redford police department/screengrabBut the argument didn't stop there. Torino sent a private Facebook message to Redford police saying if their next post got a thousand shares he'd turn himself in, bring a dozen doughnuts and clean up public schools in the area. Well, unfortunately for the guy, police accepted the challenge and got more than 3,800 shares: According to reports Torino hasn't turned himself in yet. Will he be a man of his word? Posted: 09 Oct 2017 12:18 AM PDT Pollution is a greater global threat than Ebola and HIV, according to warnings by the World Health Organisation. According to its recent report, one in four deaths among children aged under five are now due to environmental hazards such as air pollution and contaminated water. Previously this year, air pollution levels in London were worse than those in Beijing for a brief period - with the UK capital's pollutants frequently breaking UK limits. Now, the UK Government plans to tackle such dangers by banning diesel and petrol cars by 2040. But how bad is air pollution in other areas of the UK? Search for your postcode to see how bad air pollution is in your area How high is air pollution in your area? How does the UK compare to the world? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), London is just a mid-table city when it comes to the international league table of polluted places. London only ranked 1,389th out of the nearly 3,000 cities and towns around the world monitored in the WHO's database of annual air pollution readings. Which cities have the worst air pollution levels? WHO guidelines state that cities should aim to have an annual average of no more than 10 micrograms of PM2.5 (very fine particulate matter) for every cubic metre of air. London had an annual PM2.5 average of 15 μg/m3 in 2013, far lower than Beijing's average of 85.2 μg/m3. These particles are very small in diameter and are classed as carcinogenic by leading health organisations. Thousands of deaths a year are attributable to air pollution in the UK. London pollution - what causes it and how can you stay safe? 01:33 Which cities have the highest air pollution levels worldwide? According to the WHO, the most polluted city in the world is Zabol in Iran. Zabol's PM2.5 measurements were found to average a massive 217 μg/m3 for the latest available year - more than 20 times higher than the recommended level. The next two entries on the list are both located in India (Gwalior and Allahabad) while the first non-Asian city on the list is Bamenda in Cameroon which came in eighth place. Tetovo in Macedonia was the most polluted European city in the database, followed by Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most polluted city in the UK isn't actually London. Glasgow topped that list, followed by Scunthorpe and Leeds with London in sixth place. However, given that these rankings are based on figures taken in 2013, the situation may have changed since. London may also experience greater peaks in air pollution but these figures are all annual averages. Table - The 100 most air polluted cities in the world |
Hezbollah leader says U.S. actions aiding Islamic State in Syria Posted: 08 Oct 2017 09:16 AM PDT Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Sunday that the United States was serving the interests of Islamic State by preventing the Syrian army and its allies advancing in some areas of eastern Syria. Nasrallah said the United States was delaying the Syrian military in its battle to retake territory from Islamic State. |

The U.S. Army Is Building a New Tank in a Very Sneaky Way Posted: 09 Oct 2017 05:27 AM PDT The U.S. Army just got a new tank. On Oct. 4, 2017, the Army's program office for ground vehicles announced that the service had accepted the first M-1A2SEPV3 "on schedule and on budget." General Dynamics Land Systems builds the tank in Lima, Ohio, using existing M-1 hulls as a starting point. The Army asked to buy 58 M-1A2SEPV3 tanks in 2018, against a total requirement for around a thousand of the new vehicles — enough to equip all of the branch's active-duty tank brigades. |
Posted: 08 Oct 2017 10:23 AM PDT They're back with the same mission, and far, far fewer numbers. A group of white nationalists, led by Richard Spencer (a man who was punched in the face twice on President Trump's Inauguration Day) marched in Charlottesville, Virginia Saturday night with torches in hand toward the statue of Robert E. Lee. Spencer dubbed the small gathering "Charlottesville 3.0" in a tweet, referencing earlier protests in May and August, the latter of which led to the death of one anti-hate protester Heather Heyer. SEE ALSO: Trump's Charlottesville remarks are costing Mar-a-Lago big business "It was a planned flash mob," Spencer told The Washington Post. "It was a great success. Plenty of police on standby in park. pic.twitter.com/LuJEsAgxQy — Matt Talhelm (@MattTalhelm) October 7, 2017 It's unclear how Spencer categorizes success. It seems that he, at least, wanted the affair to be seen as a peaceful one. But the turnout was very small and the demonstration, staged under the cover of night and lit only by a handful of cheap torches, was brief. "We wanted to prove that we came in peace in May, we came in peace in August, and we come again in peace," Spencer said. "Russia is our friend" and "The South will rise again" were among some of the chants the group shouted out into the empty night. And another, the official anthem of angry white supremacists everywhere: "You will not replace us!" Clearly not. But they will be mocked and scorned on Twitter: They're white supremacists. The last time "white activists" gathered in #Charlottesville, Heather Heyer was killed by one of them. https://t.co/VRbOtoWACy — April (@ReignOfApril) October 8, 2017 You know why white supremacists are still marching in Charlottesville? Because our president and our culture still embolden them. — Jared Yates Sexton (@JYSexton) October 8, 2017 Mild headline makes it sound like a band is back in town. You're not welcome here! Go home! Meantime we're looking at all our legal options. Stay tuned. — Mike Signer (@MikeSigner) October 8, 2017 The size of Saturday's "flash mob" was much smaller than previous gatherings. There were about 50 or so attendees, according to The Daily Beast. Last time there were hundreds of white supremacists in #Charlottesville, tonite there were 30. Like Trump's downward approval, end is near. — Amy Siskind (@Amy_Siskind) October 8, 2017 And it wasn't that long of a party. The group reportedly arrived at Emancipation Park at about 7:45 p.m. and left 15 minutes later, WVIR-TV reported according to WaPo. Police arrived 30 minutes after the group left. "No disorders occurred during this rally," a police officer told The New York Times. But members of the alt-right did take to Signer's Twitter mentions: Good morning, trolls and bots. Everyone else: if you want to see the alt-right in action, check out my feed. But brace yourself, it's ugly. — Mike Signer (@MikeSigner) October 8, 2017 A separate group consisting of local residents gathered at Emancipation Park as well and marched to University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan's house, where they were stopped by police, The Daily Beast reported. Spencer, in his speech at the rally, promised to return. A Charlottesville spokesperson told The Daily Beast that Spencer's assembly was protected under the First Amendment. How many nukes are in the world and what could they destroy? Posted: 09 Oct 2017 12:18 AM PDT Tensions over nuclear weapons have been raised further after North Korea claimed to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb. This latest move comes amid increasing concern over North Korea's military capabilities, with the new US administration upping its rhetoric in response. While the Pyongyang regime increases the frequency with which it is conducting missile tests, Donald Trump's defence secretary Jim 'Mad Dog' Mattis has previously warned North Korea of an "effective and overwhelming" response if Pyongyang used nuclear weapons. North Korea has conducted a major Nuclear Test. Their words and actions continue to be very hostile and dangerous to the United States.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 3, 2017 Elsewhere, rhetoric hints at a return of the expansion of nuclear arsenals across the world. In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin told a meeting of defence chiefs that strengthening nuclear capability should be a key objective for 2017. Donald Trump then took to Twitter to respond, vowing to do the same. Such rhetoric has led to concerns about the world's nuclear capacity and the unpredictability of those in charge of the warheads. It seems the world is a long way from "coming to its senses" - with millions of kilotons already in military service around the world. Between them, the world's nuclear-armed states have around 15,000 warheads - the majority of which belong to the US and Russia. It is estimated that just under 10,000 of these are in military service, with the rest awaiting dismantlement, according to the Arms Control Association. Putin says Russia should strengthen its nuclear arsenal 00:51 Which countries have nuclear weapons? There are five nuclear-weapon states in the world: China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States. These are officially recognised as possessing such weapons by the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty acknowledges and legitimises their arsenals, but they are not supposed to build or maintain them forever. Indeed, they have committed to eliminate them. There are also four other countries that have nuclear weapons: Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea. These countries didn't sign the Treaty, and together possess an estimated 340 nuclear weapons. But it's Russia and the US that have by far the most in the world - dominating all other countries by collectively sharing 88 per cent of the world's arsenal of stockpiled nukes. This figure increases to 93 per cent when we consider retired nukes. How the world's 15,000 nukes are divided How deadly could these nuclear weapons be? The world's current collection of 14,900 nuclear weapons possesses enough power to kill millions of people and flatten dozens of cities. According to Telegraph research, it is estimated that the US and Russian arsenals combined have power equating to 6,600 megatons. This is a tenth of the total solar energy received by Earth every minute. According to the NukeMap website, the dropping of the B-83, the largest bomb in the current US arsenal, would kill 1.4m people in the first 24 hours. A further 3.7m people would be injured, as the thermal radiation radius reached 13.km. Likewise, the "Tsar Bomba" is the largest USSR bomb tested. If this bomb was dropped on New York, it is estimated that it could kill 7.6m people and injure 4.2m more. The nuclear fallout could reach an approximate area of 7,880km on a 15mph wind, impacting millions more people. Both America and Russia's arsenals are regulated by several treaties that place limits on the numbers and kinds of warheads and delivery systems they have. If either country were to expand their nuclear capacity even further, as Trump and Putin have hinted at, it could shatter these agreements and plunge the world into a new Cold War. North Korean missile ranges Our figures on nuclear weapons, based on statistics from the Arms Control Association, are mainly estimates because of the secretive nature with which most governments treat information about their arsenals. |

The handsome 50-year-old was bodyguard to former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic and is one of only a few Bosnian Muslim commanders to have faced trial for atrocities committed against Serbs. An old photograph shows a long-haired youth who defended the eastern town of Srebrenica, where some 8,000 Muslim men and boys were eventually massacred by Serb forces, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. |
Kremlin says S-400 missile talks with Saudi Arabia on track Posted: 09 Oct 2017 04:58 AM PDT The Kremlin said on Monday that talks with Saudi Arabia over Moscow supplying Riyadh with advanced S-400 air defense missile systems had gone well so far despite talk of a possible U.S.-Saudi arms deal. Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted Saudi Arabia's King Salman for talks at the Kremlin last week during which Saudi Arabia said it had signed a memorandum of understanding on the purchase of the S-400s. A day later, the Pentagon said the U.S. State Department had approved the possible sale of a THAAD anti-missile defense system to Saudi Arabia at an estimated cost of $15 billion. |
