They have unearthed what they say is likely the tomb of the original Santa Claus, or Saint Nicholas, beneath an ancient church in Demre, southern Turkey. Demre, previously known as Myra, in Antalya province, is believed to be the birthplace of the 4th century bishop. Cemil Karabayram, the head of Antalya's Monument Authority, said the shrine was discovered during electronic surveys that showed gaps beneath the church. "We believe this shrine has not been damaged at all, but it is quite difficult to get to it as there are mosaics on the floor," Mr Karabayram told the Turkish Hurriyet Daily News. He said he is very optimistic about uncovering Saint Nicholas's remains, but warned it will take some time to scale each tile one by one and remove them as a whole in a mold. Turkish experts claim that what was believed to be the original grave of Saint Nicholas (pictured) was in fact the grave of an anonymous priest. At the time of his death in 343 A.D., Saint Nicholas was interred at the church in Demre, where he lay undisturbed until the 11th century. Previously, the remains were believed to have then been smuggled to the Italian city of Bari by merchants in the year 1087. Christians visit the site of what was thought to be his final resting place in Bari's Basilica di San Nicola. However, Turkish experts are now claiming the wrong bones were removed and those taken abroad belong to another, local priest, rather than the legendary bishop. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, a practice celebrated on his feast day, December 6. Dutch arrivals to the United States called their version of Saint Nicholas "Sinterklaas," which later became Santa Claus. In the largest ever study of its kind, analysis involving more than 30,000 adults revealed those who do not exercise are almost twice as likely - 44 per cent - to suffer with depression, compared to those who were exercising one to two hours a week. The research, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, also showed that 12 per cent of depression cases could have been prevented by a small amount of regular exercise. Even relatively small amounts of exercise, from one hour per week, can deliver significant protection against depression.Associate Professor Samuel Harvey The study's lead author, Associate Professor Samuel Harvey, said: "We've known for some time that exercise has a role to play in treating symptoms of depression, but this is the first time we have been able to quantify the preventative potential of physical activity in terms of reducing future levels of depression. "These findings are exciting because they show that even relatively small amounts of exercise, from one hour per week, can deliver significant protection against depression." An international research team, led by the Australia-based Black Dog Institute, studied 33,908 Norwegian adults whose levels of exercise and symptoms of depression and anxiety were monitored over 11 years. A healthy group of participants were asked to report how often they exercise and at what intensity, ranging from without becoming breathless or sweating to becoming breathless and sweating or exhausting themselves. At a follow-up stage, they completed a self-report to indicate any emerging anxiety or depression. Mental health figures The research team also accounted for variables which might impact the association between exercise and common mental illness. Theses included socio-economic and demographic factors, substance use, body mass index, new onset physical illness and perceived social support. Prof Harvey added: "These results highlight the great potential to integrate exercise into individual mental health plans and broader public health campaigns. "If we can find ways to increase the population's level of physical activity even by a small amount, then this is likely to bring substantial physical and mental health benefits."
