Teenager 'thrown out of school' for sitting during Pledge of Allegiance Posted: 08 Oct 2017 11:02 AM PDT A 17-year-old student is suing her high school district after she claims she was suspended for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance. India Landry, from Houston, said she was asked to leave Windfern High School after the incident, despite having sat during the Pledge to the flag hundreds of times before. The federal lawsuit alleges administrators at the school had been "recently whipped into a frenzy" by NFL players kneeling for the national anthem, according to the NY Daily News. |
Sudan Airways seeks post-embargo Boeing, Airbus spare parts Posted: 08 Oct 2017 10:30 AM PDT Sudan's national carrier aims to revive its fleet by procuring new components from Boeing and Airbus after Washington lifted its 20-year-old trade embargo on Khartoum, a minister said Sunday. Sudan Airways, one of the oldest airlines in Africa, has 12 of its 14-strong fleet of aircraft grounded after failing to source spare parts from Boeing and Airbus because of the sanctions imposed in 1997. |

Ghana's capital rocked by huge gas explosion leaving several casualties Posted: 07 Oct 2017 07:38 PM PDT A tanker explosion at a gas-filling station in Ghana late on Saturday, followed by a secondary blast, has left a number of casualties in the Legon suburb in northwest Accra, authorities said. Ghana's deputy information minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said the fire has been controlled and firefighters are now controlling the second explosion. "It is early days yet to give any figures" on the number injured or dead, he said, adding there were casualties. Ambulances had been deployed, and those people who sustained various degrees of injury have been sent to hospitals, he said. More than 200 police personnel were also deployed to help to cordon off the area of the explosion, making it difficult to access. The filling station is near a transport terminal and close to some hostels for the University of Ghana in Accra. It was like refugees moving away from a war-torn zone." Videos of the explosion posted on social media showed a blazing mushroom cloud. Legon is a suburb of the capital, and is also home to the main campus of the University of Ghana. That explosion killed at least six fire service personnel at the scene, and injured at least other 80 people, according to Ghana's state news agency. |

A hurricane is no reason to end the party in New Orleans Posted: 07 Oct 2017 06:27 PM PDT A hurricane could not deter revelers Thursday on popular Bourbon Street in New Orleans' historic French Quarter. Just minutes before an evening curfew in the city known as "The Big Easy," happy people continued to saunter through the streets, dance in bars and dine in restaurants. Mayor Mitch Landrieu could barely contain his irritation, admonishing those who did not heed the curfew or evacuation orders for several low-lying areas. |

North Korea's Air Force Is Total Junk (But It Can Still Kill) Posted: 07 Oct 2017 06:43 AM PDT North Korea's Korean People's Army Air Force (KPAAF)—referred to as the Air and Anti-Air Force Command in South Korean documents—is not in the top ranks of the world's air forces. The regime's survival is their survival, and thus the so-called Korean People's Army is a dedicated to their supreme leader and is likely to put up a fanatical defense in the event of a renewed war. Among the most antiquated and obsolete aircraft in the North Korean air force is the Shenyang J-5, a Chinese copy of the 1950s-era Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-17 Fresco. |

Dove apologises for advert showing black woman transforming into white model Posted: 08 Oct 2017 02:20 PM PDT Dove has issued an apology for an advertising campaign branded "racist" which included an image of a black woman removing her top to reveal a white model underneath. The series of adverts, which have provoked outcry on social media after being circulated on Facebook, also showed a third image portraying a caucasian woman transforming into an Asian woman as she undresses. Following the furore, Dove published a statement which stated: "An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offence it caused. "As part of a campaign for Dove body wash, a three-second video clip was posted to the US Facebook page. "This did not represent the diversity of real beauty which is something Dove is passionate about and is core to our beliefs, and it should not have happened. "We have removed the post and have not published any other related content. We apologise deeply and sincerely for the offence that it has caused." The advert was highlighted by Naomi Blake, who posted the images on social media The images first went viral after an American makeup artist, Naomi Blake, shared them with her followers on social media. She said: "What does America tell black people...that we are judged by the colour of our skin and that includes what is considered beautiful in this country. "To know that colorism is a problem in the world, that includes bleaching the skin, and they would put this ad out without a thought...the tone deafness in these companies makes no sense." The controversy comes two years after the cosmetics brand faced a wave of criticism for the product literature on one of its self-tanning products. The "summer glow" lotion, aimed at people with "normal to dark skin", was labelled racist because it suggested that consumers with darker skin were not "normal". Meanwhile, in 2011 Dove was again accused of racism for using a before and after image in an advert for its "visiblecare" range, which appeared to place three women on a colour gradient. The image, which portrayed a black, an Asian and a white woman standing together, appeared to suggest that the lightest skinned woman was the end result. |

Germany worries Trump will quit Iran nuclear deal Posted: 08 Oct 2017 08:27 AM PDT German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said Sunday that he feared US President Donald Trump would quit the Iran nuclear deal next week. Trump is a stern critic of the 2015 accord, which he has called "the worst deal ever", and US officials say he intends to tell US Congress next week that Tehran is not honouring its side of the bargain. "The United States is likely to quit the Iran agreement next week -- that is my great concern," Gabriel was quoted as saying by national news agency DPA. |

Since his conviction for the rape in 2008, Mirasolo, from Brown City, Michigan, has been convicted of another child sex assault, for which he served four years in prison. |

Posted: 07 Oct 2017 09:28 AM PDT A grieving widower survivalist and a young Puerto Rican couple have found a way to turn tragedy into hope. Forty barrels, filled with over 300 pounds of food each are making their way to Puerto Rico after Joseph Badame ran into Victoria Barber at an estate sale where bankers were selling of Mr Badame's New Jersey home. The food — amassed over 45 years as Mr Badame prepared with his late wife for a potential national or international crisis — were not for sale, and the 74-year-old was concerned it would all get tossed. |

Posted: 07 Oct 2017 02:54 AM PDT It's not unusual for dinners with friends to dissolve into seances of despair about Donald Trump and America's Republican leaders. First, disgust at Trump showing up in Puerto Rico and lobbing rolls of paper towel into the crowd, not surprising perhaps given the number of Spanish-speakers present, feeling raw on the topic. The Mayor of Puerto Rican capital San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz (whom I'd interviewed on the island on Monday), deemed the display "terrible and degrading". |
